Plateau State on Thursday joined other states across Nigeria to commemorate the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day, honouring fallen heroes, serving personnel and veterans who have contributed to the nation’s peace and security.
The event, held at the Joseph Gomwalk Secretariat in Jos, featured the traditional laying of wreaths by Governor Caleb Mutfwang, security chiefs, representatives of veterans’ organizations, religious leaders and other dignitaries.
In his remarks, Governor Mutfwang emphasized the need for stronger civil-military relations in addressing contemporary security challenges.
He commended the sacrifices of the Nigerian Armed Forces in protecting the sovereignty of the country, noting that meaningful collaboration between civilians and military institutions was essential to sustaining peace on the Plateau and beyond.
“Our armed forces have continued to demonstrate courage and professionalism despite enormous challenges,” Mutfwang said, while urging citizens to appreciate the role of security agencies in safeguarding lives and national stability.
The governor also reiterated his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of military families, widows and veterans who have served the country, stressing that remembrance must go beyond ceremonies to tangible support.
The 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day aligns with nationwide observances aimed at recognizing military contributions and reaffirming national unity. Events included prayers for peaceful coexistence and tributes to personnel who paid the supreme price during internal security operations and peacekeeping missions.
