The SHIFT Initiative has strengthened the capacity of artisans and entrepreneurs in Plateau State through a one day financial literacy and business management training organized in collaboration with the Sustainable Development Goals Project Support Unit, Plateau State.

Led by its Executive Director, Ulan V. Jatau, PhD, alongside members of the SHIFT team, the training addressed a critical challenge facing many small-business owners: the gap between possessing a vocational skill and having the financial knowledge required to build a sustainable enterprise.
Participants received practical guidance on financial literacy, budgeting, bookkeeping, record keeping, digital finance, modern business management and sustainable entrepreneurship. The sessions were structured to help artisans understand how to manage income, control expenditure, monitor profitability, reinvest earnings and plan for business growth.
The programme complemented the equipment and financial support provided under the wider empowerment initiative. Beneficiaries were selected from across Plateau State’s 17 local government areas, reflecting the programme’s commitment to inclusive economic participation and grassroots enterprise development.
For SHIFT Initiative, empowerment must go beyond the distribution of tools. Entrepreneurs also require the financial discipline and business knowledge needed to protect their investments, strengthen their operations and transform their skills into viable enterprises.
Dr. Jatau’s leadership during the training reflected her broader commitment to education, mentorship and community development. Working with the SHIFT team, she helped translate essential financial and business principles into practical lessons relevant to the everyday realities of artisans and informal-sector entrepreneurs.

The Plateau State Government, represented by the Deputy Governor, Ngo Josephine Piyo, reaffirmed its commitment to programmes that equip citizens with the skills, resources and enabling environment required to thrive.
Through the initiative, SHIFT is helping Plateau artisans move beyond business. Survival towards stronger financial management, increased profitability, job creation and sustainable economic impact within their communities.
