The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the postponement of the planned nationwide voter revalidation exercise until after the 2027 General Election.

The decision was reached during a meeting between the Commission and Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) held on Friday, April 10, 2026, where key electoral matters were reviewed.

According to INEC, the voter revalidation exercise remains a vital aspect of its constitutional mandate to maintain a credible and up-to-date National Register of Voters. The process is designed to verify and update existing voter records, ensure the accuracy of personal data, and eliminate duplicate or ineligible entries from the register.

The Commission explained that the exercise would also provide an opportunity for registered voters across the country to confirm their details and make necessary corrections where required, thereby strengthening the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral system.

Despite the postponement, INEC reaffirmed its commitment to delivering free, fair, credible, and inclusive elections, assuring Nigerians that all necessary steps would continue to be taken to safeguard the electoral process ahead of the 2027 polls.

The statement was signed by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee.
