New Studies Suggest Smartphone Use May Be Contributing to Falling Fertility Rates

Two recent studies have linked the rapid rise in smartphone adoption to declining fertility rates among women of reproductive age, suggesting that changes in social behavior driven by digital technology may be reshaping birth patterns worldwide.

One of the studies, titled The Collapse of Teen Fertility in the Digital Era, was conducted by economists Nathan Hudson and Hernan Moscoso Boedo of the University of Cincinnati. The researchers analyzed fertility trends across 128 countries and found a sharp decline in teenage birth rates beginning around 2007, coinciding with the widespread introduction of smartphones.

According to the study, the increasing use of smartphones may have marked a turning point as teenagers shifted from face-to-face interactions to digital communication. The researchers observed that this trend occurred across countries with varying social, economic, and policy environments.

The study also found that in-person socializing among young people dropped significantly as digital engagement increased. Researchers linked this shift not only to lower fertility rates but also to changes in sexual activity, mental health outcomes, suicide rates, and crime patterns.

Data showed that fertility rates fell most sharply among teenagers aged 15 to 19 in high-income countries after 2008. Moderate declines were recorded among women aged 20 to 24, while fertility levels among those aged 25 and older—who make up the majority of women of reproductive age—remained relatively stable.

In the United States, birth rates among girls aged 15 to 19 declined by 71 percent during the study period. Rates also dropped by 43 percent among women aged 20 to 24 and by 23 percent among those aged 25 to 29. Smaller declines were recorded among older age groups.

The researchers argued that the drop in births was not primarily due to delayed childbearing or increased abortion rates. Instead, they pointed to fewer conceptions resulting from reduced face-to-face interaction among young people.

The study noted that improved broadband and 4G coverage in the United States provided evidence of a causal relationship between digital connectivity and declining teen fertility. It also found that in-person socializing among teenagers was cut roughly in half while time spent on digital leisure activities nearly tripled.

A second study by economists Caitlin K. Myers and Ezekiel Hooper, titled Is the iPhone Birth Control? Causal Evidence from AT&T’s 2007–2011 Carrier Monopoly, reached similar conclusions.

Using mobile broadband coverage data, birth records, and county-level demographic information, the researchers examined the impact of the iPhone’s launch in 2007 on fertility trends. They found that U.S. birth rates, which had remained relatively stable between 1980 and 2007, began a steep decline after the smartphone’s introduction and continued falling through the 2010s and into the 2020s.

The study reported a 70 percent decline in birth rates among teenagers and a 47 percent drop among women aged 20 to 24. In contrast, birth rates among women aged 35 to 39 increased by 14 percent during the same period.

Researchers described the iPhone and the rise of social media as major technological shifts that altered how young people worked, socialized, and formed relationships. These changes were associated with reduced dating, lower participation in paid work, fewer sexual partners, and increased sexual inactivity among young adults.

The authors estimated that smartphone adoption may have accounted for between 21 and 31 percent of the decline in teen births between 2007 and 2011, with significant effects also observed among women aged 20 to 29.

Overall, both studies suggest that smartphones may have played a role in reducing fertility rates by changing social interactions, particularly through decreased face-to-face engagement and shifts in sexual behavior among younger generations.
