Jos, Plateau State – 8th August 2024: The Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) has announced a revised timetable for the 2024 Local Government Elections. This decision comes in light of the ongoing #EndBadGovernance protests, which have significantly impacted the electoral process across the state.
In a press briefing, PLASIEC Chairman Plangji Daniel Cishak explained that the protests and the accompanying curfews, especially in the Jos-Bukuru metropolis, have disrupted several key electoral activities. To ensure that all political parties are able to participate fully and without disadvantage, the Commission has decided to extend and reschedule several pre-election activities.
Notable changes to the election timetable include the extension of the conduct of party primaries, now set to conclude on 15th August 2024, rather than the previously scheduled 8th August. The collection of nomination forms for candidates will now take place from 16th to 19th August 2024, while the submission of these forms is rescheduled to 20th to 23rd August 2024. Additionally, the publication of candidates’ personal particulars by the Commission has been moved to 24th August 2024, and the verification and screening of candidates will occur between 26th August and 2nd September 2024.
Chairman Cishak assured the public that these adjustments are made to maintain the integrity, fairness, and transparency of the electoral process. PLASIEC remains fully committed to providing a level playing field for all political parties and ensuring that the elections proceed smoothly and without bias.
Despite these changes, the actual date for the Local Government Elections remains unchanged. The elections will still take place on Wednesday, 9th October 2024, between 8:00 am and 3:00 pm.
