Breaking News: JUTH Sacks 25 Resident Doctors

Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) in Plateau State has sacked 25 doctors working with the health institution. It was gathered that the news about the disengagement of the resident doctors was causing panic at the hospital, which is one of the isolation centres for coronavirus disease (COVID-19) patients in the state.

Concerns were raised about the treatment of quarantined inmates when the president of the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), JUTH branch, Dr. Stephen Lukden, confirmed the development to journalists in Jos yesterday.

Lukden said, “It is true; 25 residents received letters of termination of their residency training and we have information that some will receive theirs in the weeks/months to come. We have not seen this kind of thing before.”

In a letter addressed to the CMD of JUTH, Prof. Edmund Banwat, the association asked the hospital’s management to reverse the termination, describing the action as unjust and illegal.

In the letter signed by Lukden and the General Secretary, Dr. Noel Nnaegbuna, the medics noted that the Medical Residency Training Act (MRTA) 2017, which was signed into law by President Muhammadu Buhari and gazetted on July 16, 2018, stipulated guidelines on the conduct of residency training programme in the country.

They pointed out that the Federal Ministry of Health had also in a letter dated June 18, 2019, directed all CMDs in the federal tertiary health institutions to immediately begin the implementation of the gazetted MRTA acts and wondered why the JUTH management would go ahead to sack the doctors in breach of the constitution.

The letter dated May 4, 2020, which was copied to the Board Chairman of JUTH, Medical Advisory Council (MAC), Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), among others read in part: “It is sad that this sack is occurring in the heat of the COVID-19 pandemic when the Federal Government is even considering recalling retired doctors to the workforce.

“The unlawful termination of these appointments contravenes the provision of the MRTA, which mandates the National Post-Graduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN) to regulate the residency training and also routinely bring out online data bases stating when a resident should be withdrawn from the programme.

“A similar situation happened in Benue State University Teaching Hospital, Makurdi, where 33 residents were wrongfully sacked two weeks ago. After deliberations with the governor, the residents were recalled this week.

“In view of this, we ask the management to look into this issue again critically and promptly recall the affected resident doctors as provided in the MRTA by withdrawing the already issued letters and re-issuing appropriate ones to the affected individuals.”

COVID-19: FG grants 2-month licence fee waiver to broadcast stations

The Federal Government has granted a two-month licence fee waiver for terrestrial broadcast stations in the country. The move is part of measures to cushion the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the broadcast industry.

Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, disclosed this at a meeting with the Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria (BON). The meeting was held on Wednesday in Abuja.

Mohammed informed the meeting that he had approved the request by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) on the waiver. Furthermore, he stated that he also approved the distribution of protective equipment to some community broadcast stations across the country by the NBC.

Mohammed acknowledged the fact that BON members and other sectors of the creative industry in general; had been hit hard by the effects of the pandemic. Nevertheless, he disclosed that the government was taking a holistic approach to address the impacts of COVID-19 on the creative industry.

“Let me stress here that the Creative Industry is a very critical sector of the nation’s economy and a major plank of the economic diversification policy of this administration. It creates the highest number of jobs after Agriculture, especially for the youth.

“Therefore, there is no doubt that we need a collective and government-supported approach in dealing with the immediate; short and long term palliatives and initiatives for the industry; in order to mitigate the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the sector,” he said.

Additionally, the Minister revealed that government had decided to set up a committee of industry stakeholders; to look into and advise it on the best way to mitigate the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the industry.

He said the committee’s Terms of Reference included assessment of expected impact of the pandemic on the industry in general.

Specifically, the committee is to advise the government on how to mitigate job and revenue losses in the sector; as well as to create succour for the industry small businesses. It is also to suggest the type of taxation and financing that is best for the industry; in order to encourage growth, Mohammed said. Further, the committee will advise the government on other measures that can be undertaken to support the industry.

Mohammed said the committee is chaired by Ali Baba, a comedian, Film and TV entrepreneur; while Ms Anita Eboigbe of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) is the Secretary. Other members include Bolanle Austen Peters of TerraKulture Performing Arts; Charles Novia television independent Producer (TeenTV); and Segun Arinze, an actor and producer. Also, Ali Jita, actor and musician; Baba Agba, film director; Kene Okwuosa, cinema and film distributor; and Efe Omoregbe of record label and collective rights management are also members.

Other members are Prince Daniel Aboki of Cool FM/WaZoBia, Chioma Ude, Olumade Adesemowo, Dare Art Alade and Hajia Sa’a Ibrahim from BON.

The minister said they were expecting the representatives of the Fashion, Publishing, Photography; as well as Hospitality and Travel sectors to join the committee.

He said the committee has four weeks to submit its report.

Earlier, the Vice Chairman of BON, Sir Godfrey Ohuabunwa, who led the delegation; appreciated efforts of the federal government so far in containing the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ohuabunwa said COVID-19 had adversely affected the revenue generation and earnings of broadcast outlets; noting that if not urgently addressed, would lead to collapse and shut down of many. He held that survival and success of any democracy lies in the existence of a robust and well-informed populace; which is achievable through the existence of the broadcast outlet.

Therefore, he called on the federal government through the Central Bank of Nigeria to institute special broadcast sector stimulus intervention fund to enable broadcasters access long term facilities at single digits. Also, he urged government to provide temporary scheme of paying compensation to independent broadcasters who are contemplating sacking workers.

Additionally, the vice chairman advised government to provide adequate funding for the running of state-owned media houses; provide personal protective equipment, special duty allowances and life insurance for their reporters and cameramen.

Besides, he urged government to approve tax rebate for broadcast stations; as well as a one-year moratorium payment of their annual operating licence fee payable to NBC.

Buhari opens up on how returned $311m will be spent

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday opened up on projects that the repatriated $311m from the United States will be expended on Nigeria.

The amount is part of funds looted by the late Head of State, Sani Abacha and stashed away in the United States.
President Buhari indicated that the funds have been allocated for infrastructure development that is decades-overdue across Nigeria.
A statement by the President’s spokesperson, Garba Shehu said the money has been allocated for the completion of the second Niger Bridge, the Lagos-Ibadan and Abuja-Kaduna-Kano expressway.

Also, part of the money will be used for the creation of tens of thousands of Nigerian construction jobs and local skills, which can then be useful in future projects.
The statement reads: “On Monday, May 4, 2020, some $311 million US Dollars – stolen from the citizens of Nigeria during the Abacha regime – were safely returned to our country from the United States.
“These funds have already been allocated, and will be used in full, for vital and decades-overdue infrastructure development: The second Niger Bridge, the Lagos-Ibadan and Abuja-Kaduna-Kano expressways – creating tens of thousands of Nigerian construction jobs and local skills, which can then be useful in future projects.”

He also disclosed that part of the funds will be invested in boosting Nigeria’s power sector.
The statement added: “Part of the funds will also be invested in the Mambilla Power Project which, when completed, will provide electricity to some three million homes – over ten million citizens – in our country.
“The receipt of these stolen monies – and the hundreds of millions more that have already been returned from the United Kingdom and Switzerland – are an opportunity for the development of our nation, made far harder for those decades the country was robbed of these funds.

“Indeed, previous monies returned last year from Switzerland – some $320 million US dollars – are already being used for the government’s free school feeding scheme, a stipend for millions of disadvantaged citizens, and grain grants for those in severe food hardship.”
