CAN, Plateau Indigenous Youths Decry Alleged Genocide Against Christians, Seek Global Action

The Plateau State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), alongside the Coalition of Indigenous Youths Bodies of Plateau State, has raised serious concerns over what they describe as a sustained and deliberate campaign of violence against Christian communities in Nigeria, particularly in the North and Middle Belt.

The groups made the allegations during a joint press conference held on December 31, 2025, in Jos, Plateau State. Addressing journalists, Rev. Ezekiel Dachomo, Chairman of the Ropp Regional Church Council of the Church of Christ in Nations (COCIN), said the coalition believes the attacks amount to genocide and religious cleansing.

According to Rev. Dachomo, the coalition has gathered extensive evidence, including community records, lists of victims, photographs, and official reports, which it claims point to coordinated and targeted assaults on largely Christian settlements. He dismissed claims that the violence is merely the result of farmer-herder clashes or communal disputes, insisting that the attacks are organized and intentional.

He alleged that entire villages have been overrun, with residents killed or forced to flee, homes and churches destroyed, and ancestral lands taken over and renamed. The aim, he said, appears to be the gradual elimination of Christian presence from certain areas.

Speaking emotionally, Rev. Dachomo said he was not only addressing the media as a religious leader but also as a direct witness and victim, recounting personal losses and trauma linked to attacks on affected communities. He claimed that pastors have been killed, women sexually assaulted, children abducted, and families pushed into displacement camps, while those responsible continue to act without consequence.

The coalition accused the Nigerian government of failing to protect vulnerable communities, citing alleged security failures, judicial bias, and policies that disadvantage indigenous populations. Rev. Dachomo claimed that in some cases, victims who acted in self-defense were prosecuted, while attackers were left unpunished.

Referencing the recent pardon granted to a Christian farmer in Adamawa State, Sunday Jackson, the coalition described the case as reflecting a wider pattern of injustice. While welcoming the pardon, Rev. Dachomo said it did not address deeper concerns about how victims of violence are treated when they try to defend themselves.

The group further alleged that extremist groups and armed militias are pursuing religious and ideological agendas, pointing to recurring attacks in Plateau, Kaduna, Benue, and other states. It claimed that its data shows hundreds of deaths in Plateau State alone within short periods, alongside the destruction of homes, schools, and places of worship.

Rev. Dachomo also raised concerns about mass displacement and alleged land seizures, noting that many displaced persons are unable to return to their ancestral homes. He criticized what he described as weak enforcement of existing laws, including Plateau State’s anti-land grabbing legislation.

As part of its demands, the coalition called for urgent international intervention to protect at-risk communities, official recognition of the genocide allegations, decentralization of Nigeria’s security system, and the creation of an international tribunal to investigate alleged crimes against humanity. Other recommendations included constitutional reforms, reviews of land and security laws, and the deployment of international monitoring and protection mechanisms in affected areas.

The coalition emphasized that it was not seeking revenge but justice, safety, and the right of communities to live and worship freely on their ancestral lands. Copies of a detailed report covering incidents from 2001 to 2024 across several states were distributed to the media.

The press conference ended with an appeal to the Nigerian government and the international community to act swiftly to address the allegations and prevent further loss of life.

Government Crackdown in Plateau Exposes Child $ex Trafficking, Victims as Young as 11

A coordinated overnight raid across the Jos-Bukuru metropolis has uncovered a harrowing network of sexual exploitation, leading to the rescue of dozens of minors. The operation, described by officials as a mirror of deep societal ills, freed young victims—some as young as 11—from brothels, hotels, and motels.

The multi-agency Task Force Committee on Human Trafficking, comprising representatives from the Plateau State Ministry of Justice, NAPTIP, the Nigeria Immigration Service, NACTAL, the NDLEA, the NSCDC, and the Nigeria Police Force, executed the sweeping raids.

Among those rescued were girls aged 11 to 17, including persons living with disabilities (deaf and non-verbal), a breastfeeding mother, and a pregnant woman. Preliminary findings indicate a pattern of minors being drugged and exploited, often late at night in environments where they should not be.

The Chairman of the Committee, Plateau State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Hon. Barr. Philemon Audu Daffi, called the situation a “painful indictment of societal failure.”

“What we are seeing is a mirror of what our society has become,” Daffi stated. “Many of these young people did not choose this path freely. Insecurity, economic hardship, broken homes, and irresponsible parenting have all contributed.”

He urged the task force to act with fairness and conscience, emphasizing that the rescued victims “are not written off; they still have a future.” Daffi also issued a strong warning against compromise, affirming that the law would be applied regardless of social connections.

Mrs. Vivien Ebere Festuu of NACTAL highlighted the primary concern for the lives and futures of the children. “These are children who should be in school, under the care of their parents, not roaming the streets at night and being exploited,” she said, calling on parents and guardians to take greater responsibility.

The Secretary of the Committee, Barr. David Nenfort Yilji, warned hotel operators that any establishment found harboring minors would be shut down. He expressed confidence that the intervention could redirect the lives of the rescued victims.

The raids targeted numerous establishments across Jos North and Jos South Local Government Areas. The rescued victims are currently undergoing screening, after which the government will provide rehabilitation and support.

Officials stress that this operation marks the beginning of a sustained effort to dismantle exploitation networks and serves as a urgent call for collective societal reflection and responsibility.

PEPSA Shuts Down Two Abattoirs in Jos North Over Public Health Risks

The Plateau Environmental Protection and Sanitation Agency (PEPSA) has shut down two abattoirs in Jos North Local Government Area over persistent violations of hygiene and sanitation standards, despite repeated engagements with their operators.

The affected facilities—Filin-Ball and Gadan Ganda abattoirs—were closed following a routine inspection exercise by the Agency. The Director-General of PEPSA, Mr. Samuel Dapiya, ordered the immediate suspension of operations after the abattoirs were found to be operating under conditions that pose serious risks to public health and the environment.

According to PEPSA, the inspection revealed that the abattoirs lacked basic infrastructure required for safe and hygienic meat processing. Key deficiencies included the absence of a reliable clean water supply, poor waste disposal and drainage systems, and generally unhygienic operating environments. The Agency also observed that improper waste management practices at the facilities were contributing to the contamination of surface and groundwater in nearby communities.

Of particular concern was the discovery that contaminated water was being used to wash slaughtered animals, a practice that significantly increases health risks to consumers.

PEPSA emphasized that the operation of illegal and substandard abattoirs will not be tolerated under any circumstances, noting that meat processed in such environments poses a serious threat to public health and undermines efforts to protect the environment and ensure public safety.

Following the closures, the Agency disclosed plans to convene another meeting with the leadership of the affected abattoirs to discuss corrective measures. These may include relocating their operations to the Jos Main Abattoir, where adequate infrastructure, proper sanitary facilities, and regulatory oversight are available.

The Agency also urged members of the public to support its efforts by ensuring that meat purchased for consumption is sourced only from approved and hygienic abattoirs.

PEPSA reaffirmed its commitment to working with all relevant stakeholders to eliminate unhygienic abattoir practices and to promote a cleaner, safer, and healthier Plateau State.
