Alleged deaths of 4 youths: 50 rights, peace advocate groups flay allegations against OPSH

*Says allegation desperate falsehood to instigate public against security agencies

*Appeals to public to disregard it

A coalition of 50 human rights and peace advocate groups have decried media reports credited to some people of Gwafan Community in Plateau State accusing soldiers from Operation Safe Haven,(OPSH) of killing four youths during recent uprising in the state.

The youths were said to have died during the raid on the house of the former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Yakubu Dogara, located at Lamingo area of the state.

The mischievous persons had in a media statement, accused the soldiers of being responsible for the death of the victims, one of whom was identified as Daniel Simon,a 300 level student of Biochemistry, at the University of Jos.

But the human rights and peace advocate groups in a swift reaction, said the allegation against the military taskforce was false just as it alleged that it was deliberately falsehood carried out to instigate the general public against the security agencies in the state.

To this end, the coalition, in a statement, appealed to the public to discountenance the allegation, saying its findings following interviews and meetings with some eye witnesses in the community exonerated the soldiers.

The statement was signed by Dr Andrew Azi for Initiative For Justice and Equity Africa (INJUEA); Mr Yakubu Bot,for Center for Humanitarian Advocacy (CEHUA); Barr. Rebecca Pam,for Forum of Plateau Mothers (FOPLMO) and Comrade Isaiah Agwon for Conscience Youths Network (COYON).

The coalition which condoled with the families, people and the Government of Plateau State, said it was compelled to speak on the issue to set the records straight, given their active roles in ensuring peace on the Plateau.

The statement read in full:” We wish to express our heartfelt condolence to the families of Daniel Simon, a 300 level biochemistry student of University of Jos and three others, who died some days at the Lamingo Dam during the confusion that occasioned the burning and looting of private and infrastructures in Plateau State.

“Our hearts go to the families, the Government and people of Plateau State over this ugly development.

“However,we received with rude shock the blatant and concocted lies alleging full complicit of men of Operation Safe Haven by some mischievous people in Gwafan Village in Jos North Local Government of the state as published in the media prominent among which Vanguard Newspaper.

“As human rights and peace building organisations traversing the nook and cranny of the state with a view to ensuring a better society,we are shocked that this people emphatically accused Operation Safe Haven,OPSH, the special military taskforce set up to maintain internal security in Plateau, some parts of Bauchi State and Southern Kaduna area that its personnel killed four youths during the raid on former House of Representatives, Hon. Yakubu Dogara’s house at Lamingo area of Jos.

“Ordinarily, we would not have joined issues with allegation by the community neither should we have done same with the reporter that displayed her high-level incompetence and professional deficiency because we are not spokespersons to the Nigeria Military or Operation Safe Haven.

“But as responsible civil society organizations whose thematic area is on peace and security and also serve as watchdogs to the society, it will be unfair to allow this daylight lies and unprofessionalism stand.

“It will not only be morally wrong but also spiritually unacceptable to watch people lie against the security forces who performed excellently during the youths restiveness without any human rights violations.

” Even though the report in itself is contradictory and inconsistent, we wish to clearly state that it was bias, malicious and a deliberate attempt to rubbish the good work of the special taskforce which carried out its constitutional mandate for securing lives and properties in the country professionally during the uprising to the delight of most of the law abiding citizens of the state.

“We are compelled to issue this statement because we feel we must stand and speak the truth for the sake of the country.

“For the records , every eye witness we interviewed regarding the role of the security forces during the youth uprising in the state, particularly in Lamingo area, confirmed that the military did not fire one shot either in the air or direct to hoodlums.

“As a matter of fact, our sources confirmed that contrary to the allegation against Operation Safe Haven, they were very friendly and professional during the raid of the former speaker’s residence.

“While it was confirmed that some persons who scampered to different directions for safety on sighting other security personnel even before the arrival of operation safe haven to the scene regrettably fell into a constructed dam at the area, the eyes witnesses also confirmed that there was no sign of bullet wounds or any mark of violent on any of corpse found in the dam.

“From our observation, even as we are not pathologists, one cannot but see that the possible cause of the deaths in the dam could be drowning. Our firm belief in this considering that the bodies of the victims were found without trace of bullet wounds or trace of violence.

“The authorities had planned autopsies on the bodies but the families rejected this professional way of unraveling causes of deaths. We wonder why the families of the deceased refused autopsy. At least, autopsies would have revealed the actual causes of these deaths.

“It is curious that the allegation was only planted in Vanguard, a reputable national daily. The rush by the author, a resident correspondent on this story leaves much to be desired. We wonder what interest the reporter was serving to have jumped into such a hasty conclusion without proper investigation.

“We advise the public not to always find it convenient to attempt to criminalize our security agencies just because we don’t like their faces. For most of us, we can attest to the fact that several lives and property were saved as a result of the prompt and professional intervention of the military task force during the crises. We are aware that over 300 looters and hoodlums were arrested in the state and large quantities of looted items recovered. The troops also prevented the hoodlums from gaining access into several other government and private property and facilities. If we can’t commend them we should be fair enough to desist from falsely accusing them.

“While we strongly sympathize with the families of the deceased, we call on the general public to disregard this outright falsehoods aimed and instigating people against the security agencies.”

Apple to pay VirnetX $502.8 million in patent trial

A jury in Texas has ruled that Apple has to pay VirnetX $502.8 million in royalties for VPN on Demand; a feature that lets iOS users access a VPN connection, Bloomberg reported. The two companies have been involved in a legal battle for ten years; with VirnetX— sometimes referred to as a patent troll; arguing that Apple’s VPN on Demand as well as FaceTime use its technology.

Apple said in a statement it plans to appeal the decision: “This case has been going on for over a decade; with patents that are unrelated to the core operations of our products; and have been found to be invalid by the patent office. Cases like this only serve to stifle innovation and also harm consumers.”

Earlier this year, a US appeals court rejected Apple’s request to reconsider a split decision; ruling that found it infringed on VirnetX patents. The ongoing court fight has gone back and forth; with a federal court in Texas ordering Apple in 2018 to pay VirnetX $502.6 million for violating four patents relating to internet-based communications; which refers to the underlying technology behind Apple’s FaceTime as well as iMessage.

But in November 2019, a three-judge panel voided that $502.6 million amount. However, the judges did not void a jury’s finding that some older iPhone models infringed two VirnetX patents. It was that finding that Apple sought to have the appeals court reconsider.

Flavoured, noiseless condoms that got South African’s talking

South Africa’s Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa on Thursday became a salesperson in the parliament during his Q&A session with the members of parliament as he set out to convince them about government’s new Max condoms.

Ramaphosa urged MPs to make use of the new free flavoured condoms as he outlined how they were stepping up measures to prevent new HIV infections.

Answering questions in the National Assembly; Ramaphosa said government’s response to the HIV/AIDS strategy was being scaled up, particularly on the prevention side.

He brought government’s new Max condoms along to demonstrate.

The new multiflavoured condoms available are in strawberry, banana; and grape which was introduced earlier this year by Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi; in a bid to encourage more young people to use contraceptives and to halt the prevalence of HIV/Aids among young people.

The Deputy President brandished the brightly coloured packages in pink and purple in front of MPs.

He said the citizens had complained about the state’s Choice condoms; saying they did not have a pleasant smell and made noise during sex adding that; the new Max guaranteed maximum pleasure and protection.

“The Max condom is in response to what a number of people were saying. They were saying the other condom that had been introduced by government did not smell so well; and it made a noise whenever it was used,” the deputy president said to cheers and giggling by the MPs.

“Through scientific developments we were able to develop a new condom which is called Max. The Max is for maximum pleasure; maximum protection and it does not make noise at all and it comes in different flavours. If you want a grape flavour, you can get a grape flavour. same as apple flavour, you can get an apple flavour.”

“For the grape flavour, you can get a grape flavour.

If you want an apple flavour, you can get an apple flavour,’’ he said ardently to a point of order from one MP who asked him who cares about the “noise” of condoms.

“Members, please help yourself, we’ve now got condoms which we expect we can all use for maximum pleasure and protection;” he encouraged the obviously amused MPs from both sides of the House.

#EndSARS: Plateau lost Properties Worth 75billion naira to looting – Gov. Lalong

Plateau State Government today 30th October, 2020 held a town hall meeting with the youths, heavily represented by their leaders and other key youth stake holders

some of those present are as follows:

Plateau Youth Council (PYC) from each LGA, #JosEndSARSProtesters, All Plateau Youth Indigenous Leaders, National association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Wing of Christian Youth, Muslim Youth, Bloggers, Social Media Influencers, People living with disabilities, Government youth representative and so many others…

Governor Simon Lalong, Plateau State Governor expressed that the state lost about N75 billion because of annihilation and gore following the crushed inclinations cause hoodlums who hijacked the #EndSARS protests across the country.

Lalong made the declaration Friday during an intelligent meeting with Youths in Government House Little Rayfield.

Recall, recently the National Assembly gathering from Plateau State drove by appointee speaker Idris Maje went round with Governor Lalong to survey the degree of vandalization and things trucked away by hoodlums.

As indicated by Lalong “the degree of obliteration is unfathomable and unsuitable. We are as yet attempting to do a complete assessment of the absolute expense of the harm. Notwithstanding, the starter report by a group of specialists I comprised has assessed the misfortunes to be put at around 75 billion naira until further notice.

“This unmistakably takes us numerous years in reverse as we don’t have the assets to supplant the structures vandalized and the things harmed or taken. We are yet to recuperate from the overwhelming financial outcomes of COVID-19 which has enormously influenced our ability to offer types of assistance.

“Surely, this demonstration of obliteration has nothing to do with the underlying #ENDSARS fights, however an away from of culpability and traitorous conduct. As at the last tally, we have in excess of 32 public and private properties that were influenced in the plundering binge.

Read the Governor’s speech below…

“My dear youth, as a father and your Governor, I feel your pain. My heart goes out to all our youths for the many challenges they face daily due to lack of opportunities for jobs and better conditions to achieve their dreams.
However, it is always confusing when people demand justice by either violating laws or trampling on the rights of others. That can only breed chaos and anarchy leading to worse consequences than what they sought to address in the first place. He mentioned.

The Governor further explain that since coming into power, his administration has remained committed to pursuing the economic development of the State through youth empowerment and job creation. That is why we continue to prioritize peace and security which encourages private investors to create jobs and boost the economy.

We established PLASMIDA to be the driving force for empowering our youths with skills and knowledge that will enable them create jobs and be self-reliant. As at today, the agency has trained about 40,000 youths in different areas and supported over 15,000 Micro, Small and Medium business start-ups. Today, Plateau State is the face of MSMEs in Nigeria as we have consistently won awards since 2018.

We have also taken advantage of our strategic partnership with the ITF, GIZ and other development partners to create opportunities for our youths in agriculture, entrepreneurship and skills development. This is in addition to providing incentives for young people to go into farming which our state is known for.
“We have also done our best to ensure that our youths benefit from all social investment programmes of the Federal Government. Since the N-Power started, 11,364 youths have benefited from Plateau State. Over 2,000 beneficiaries are under the skill acquisition component of N-Power.

“Under the conditional cash transfer, out of the over 26,000 households receiving the bimonthly stipend of 10 thousand naira, 24,070 have youths as caregivers and alternate who receive the stipend on behalf of the households. In 90% of the households, there are youths who are beneficiaries.
“Those spreading fake and malicious news try to create the impression that I am not in support of the disbandment of SARS. That is far from the truth. My support goes even beyond ending SARS, to a deeper reform of the policing architecture in the country.

“Those who want to be objective can testify that I am the Governor at the forefront of the advocacy for police reforms that will lead towards the rapid implementation of community policing which I believe will better address our peculiar security challenges as a State and nation.

“What I have cautioned against is the blanket condemnation of the entire police due to the atrocities of few bad eggs. There are many among them that perform their duties diligently who must be encouraged. You can see the kind of lawlessness that we witnessed in the last few days because of demoralization of the police.
Secondly, I want to again reiterate that the Plateau State Government did not hoard any palliatives as some political interests are desperately trying to deceive the public. We shall continue to explain that we received the items from the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs just shortly before the #ENDSARS protests began. This delayed the process for distribution.

Before then, every palliative we acquired or had received was distributed transparently by the Committee led by the Deputy Governor to vulnerable individuals and groups within the 17 Local Government Areas. Do not be deceived by those who are consumed by desperation for power and can condescend so low to exploit people’s misfortune for political gains. We are a people-centred government that can never inflict pain on our citizens.

Okonjo-Iweala: US opposition to China stalls Nigerian candidate’s WTO ambition

The United States has opposed the choice of a former Nigerian Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala to head the World Trade Organization (WTO).

Equally important, the opposition by the US has reportedly prolonged the selection process which ought to have concluded on Wednesday.

This is contrary to widespread reports that she has been named WTO DG.

1st News had reported that Okonjo-Iweala had garnered the support of the European Union (EU). All 27 ambassadors of the powerful European bloc had thrown their weight behind the Nigerian for the WTO top job. In addition, Okonjo-Iweala had equally secured massive support among African countries. Specifically, she had secured around 80 votes or about half of the WTO’s members by mid-October.

Indeed, her endorsement by the EU ambassadors on Tuesday had made her almost certain to emerge WTO DG.

However, a meeting of the organization’s members held on Wednesday, October 28 stalled. The meeting was held to conclude the selection between Okonjo-Iweala and sole rival; South Korea’s Trade Minister, Yoo Myung-hee.

The impasse was attributed to the United States’ rejection of Okonjo-Iweala. This was confirmed by WTO spokesman, Keith Rockwell in a chat with reporters at its Geneva headquarters after the meeting.

“One delegation could not support the candidacy of Dr. Ngozi and said they would continue to support South Korean minister Yoo. That delegation was the United States of America,” Rockwell was quoted as saying.

Reports monitored in the international media indicate that the US’ opposition stems from its ongoing face-off with China. The Donald Trump administration prefers a candidate who will not be decidedly pro-China, even as it sees the South Korean Yoo as a better option in that mould.

The US and China have been involved in a massive tussle over the future of the WTO. Further, Nigeria is known to be a big ally of China which it has relied on for aid for capital projects. The US sees this as a stumbling block and a potential leverage for China’s domination of the WTO; should Okonjo-Iweala claim the top job.

The development echoes the reservations expressed by Trump towards the leadership of the World Trade Organization (WHO). Director-General of the WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, an Ethiopian, has been heavily criticized by Trump as being pro-China. Trump has lampooned his handling of the coronavirus pandemic, claiming that he has pandered to China. Further, he had announced the withdrawal of the US from the WHO as a result.

Ethiopia is also a heavy recipient of aid from China.

1st News reports that Okonjo-Iweala’s status as a dual citizen – she holds a Nigerian and American passport – has failed to sway the US.

A sign of the World Trade Organization (WTO) is seen on their headquarters on September 21, 2018 in Geneva. – A World Trade Organization arbitrator will review on September 21, 2018 a Chinese request to impose more than $7 billion (nearly 6 billion euros) in annual sanctions on the United States over anti-dumping practices, a Geneva trade official said. In the same vein, Japan, a major ally of the United States, also has reservations over the US’ choice. Japan is concerned that the South Korean’s emergence as WTO DG may work against it in its many trade disputes with South Korea.

Consequently, Tokyo has thrown its weight behind Okonjo-Iweala; even as it has spoken out in favour of concluding the selection process with the Nigerian.

In spite of the opposition from the US, reports indicate that the two-time Nigerian Minister of Finance is confident of emerging the first female WTO DG.

Nikkei Asia quotes a spokesperson for Okonjo-Iweala’s campaign, who says she is “immensely humbled to receive the backing of the WTO’s selection committee” and “looks forward to the General Council on November 9 when the committee will recommend her appointment as Director-General.”

“A swift conclusion to the process will allow members to begin again to work, together, on the urgent challenges and priorities,” the campaign spokesperson said.

Buhari preaches love, understanding at Eid-el-Maulud

President Muhammadu Buhari has urged Nigerians to use the occasion of this year’s Eid-el-Maulud to reflect on the virtues of the Holy Prophet by demonstrating love and understanding for fellow citizens.

The president gave the charge in a Maulud message released by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity; Malam Garba Shehu, on Wednesday in Abuja.

Muslims all over the world celebrate the day to mark the birth of Prophet Mohammed (SAW).

Buhari enjoined the Muslim Ummah and other citizens to always exhibit virtues; namely those of patience, honesty, sincerity, kindness and generosity in all their undertakings.  Further, the president urged all citizens, and the youth in particular; to shun all negative tendencies as manifested in the hijacking of peaceful protests to loot and destroy property.

Also, he reiterated his earlier promise to bring police officers responsible for misconduct; as well as looters of the nation’s treasury, to justice. On the COVID-19 pandemic, Buhari said that the country had so far managed the problem successfully by keeping the numbers as low as possible. However, he cautioned that Nigerians must not stretch their luck too far.

“Looking at the trends in the other countries, we must do all we can to avert the second wave of the pandemic. We must make sure that our cases, which have gone down, do not rise again.

‘‘Our economy is too fragile to bear another round of lockdown,” Buhari said.

The president, therefore, advised Nigerians to continue to observe the COVID-19 protocols of social distancing, wearing of face masks and hand washing.
