Danfo drivers begin 7 days strike

Danfo drivers under the leadership of Joint Drivers Welfare Association of Nigeria (JDWAN) has reiterated the commitment of its members to embarking on a seven-day boycott of Lagos roads, beginning from Monday, October 31, 2022, over the alleged extortion by the motor parks and garages management in the state.

JDWAN National Leader, Akintade Abiodun, who disclosed this said some representatives of the association met with the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transportation Engr. Abdulhafiz Toriola and the motor park management liaison officer Mr. Hakeem Odumosu (AIG rtd) in the company of JDWAN legal adviser, Barrister Ayo Ademiluyi.

He said the essence of the meeting which took place over the weekend was defeated; as all the drivers got was threats upon threats. Hence, the strike action will go ahead as scheduled.

“The Lagos State Government has since made no concrete response to JDWAN demands. Rather, their representatives only asked for another letter to be submitted on Monday. This is regarded as a joke on our part, having released a press statement with concise demands. We also honoured the demand to deliver copies of the letter to the Lagos State Government; the State Security Service, the Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alabi, and Commissioner for Transport.

“The retired AIG also expressly said they couldn’t get rid of bus stop extortionists; because they were working for the state government. He also suggested that the chairman of the Lagos State Parks and Garages Management Committee, Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo, could organise thugs to attack us; and we would be blamed or credited for the violence – all in a failed fear-mongering tactics. Also, the Assistant to the transport commissioner threatened to arrest us and our lawyer while in their office,” JDWAN said in a statement signed by its National Leader, Akintade Abiodun, on Sunday.

JDWAN further claimed that the alleged statement of threat by CP Odumosu that MC Oluomo could attack danfo drivers, “is already happening through one Sile Sekoni (aka burger) of Badagry Roundabout Motor Park Management branch; Jafo (Oniba of Iba) of the caretaker committee, Iba branch; Seyi Bamgbose (known as student) of Iyana Iba caretaker committee branch, who threatened to beat and kill drivers on Monday.”

“Lagosians must be aware that if anything happens to our drivers, the persons named above should be held responsible,” the national leader further added.

Citing legal backing, JDWAN said, “It is pertinent to note that there is an existing restraining court order granted by Justice P. O. Lifu of the Federal High Court, Ikoyi, against the Lagos State Government and all transport agencies; stopping them from ticketing, or collecting bus stop levies, motor park levies, dues and any form of extortion from commercial drivers.”

Reiterating their demands, JDWAN listed them as:

1. Obey the court order

2. We kick against paying motor park “thugs” at every bus stop. All illegal money at garages and parks must also stop.

3. Harassment of law enforcement agencies & intimidation (allegedly with guns, cutlasses and broken bottles) by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority task force & the Rapid Response Squad must end immediately.

4. The Lagos State Government should also build and assign more bus stops for commercial use; to avoid arrest by LASTMA for dropping off passengers at existing bus stops; which are known to commuters as official bus stops.

“Once again, we are calling all Lagos commercial drivers, commuters, civil society organisations and residents to observe the seven days boycott on Monday, October 31; stay at home and not ply any road for commercial purposes or block any road whatsoever.

“All drivers should also enjoy their day with their families without extortion and violence from the ‘Agberos’ (hoodlums).

“JDWAN and all justice-loving citizens should remain law-abiding; refrain from blocking the roads, avoid violent confrontation and demonstrations,” the statement concluded.

Re-awarding the Lalong Legacy Project will trigger more litigations – Bleneson Services

Bleneson Services Nig Ltd, contractors of the Lalong Legacy Project have stated that the Plateau State Government has not terminated their contract and therefore has no right to re-award the same contract to another contractor.

The Managing Director of Bleneson Services Nig Ltd, Engr Lawson Ngoa, stated this in an interview while responding to reports of the recent approval of a new contractor and N26.6B for the completion of the Legacy Project by the Plateau State Executive Council.

Engineer Lawson said that the project cannot be re-awarded to a new contractor, because there is a pending case before the court of law on the project. “Litigation is on between the state Government and the Contractor and also a case between the contractor and other sub-contractors as such it is not possible for the same project to be re-awarded. He said’

He further faulted the government for saying they were terminating or have terminated the contract on the grounds of non-performance after the Plateau State Governor, Simon Lalong has been quoted in interviews saying the project was 70percent to completion. “If we have done 70percent like they say, what then will stop us from completing the project?” He said

“We don’t need to compound this issue, bringing in another contractor now when the main contractor is still alive, and the case is still before the court of Law, we will only compound the issues more as bringing in the new contractor will amount to more litigation, and the more we go into litigation the more the project will still not be done”.

“This case is before the court of Law and we have not been paid a dime by anyone neither has anyone been sent to me nor approached me for settlement, and there is no consent agreement made all through the one year that the case has been in court”. Engr Lawson said

He further stated that he was also in support that the Lalong Legacy Project being completed as it was for the overall interest of the Plateau State Citizens.

The Projects, 21 in all, were dubbed ‘Lalong’s Legacy Projects and they include 9 primary schools, 6 secondary schools and 6 hospitals, all of world-standard and located across the 17 local government areas of the State.

Recently, the Plateau State Executive Council at a Meeting held at the Council Chambers of the new Government House, Little Rayfield Jos, and presided over by Governor Simon Bako Lalong, approved a new contractor for the completion of the Lalong Legacy Projects.

The Executive Council said it approved the award of the contract for the completion of the projects at the sum of N26.6 billion following the termination of the contract with the previous contractor which was a decision taken at the end of the Executive Council Meeting.

Recall that Bleneson Services Ltd had on March 16, instituted a suit seeking to restrain the Plateau government from terminating its contract with the company for the construction of schools and hospitals under the Lalong Legacy Projects.

The institution of the suit was after the Plateau state government issued a 30-day “Notice of Termination of Contract” on the Company on March 9, following what it claimed to be failure of the company to deliver a phase of the project.

Presiding Judge, the Chief Judge of Plateau State, Justice Yakubu Dakwak, struck out the case after it held that there was a failure of mandatory steps failed to be taken by the defendants as required by the rules of court which robbed the court of jurisdiction to handle the matter. However Bleneson Services Nig. LTD. have since filled in an appeal and awaiting the verdict of the Court.

Elon Musk appoints Matt Wallace as Twitter CEO

Elon Musk has appointed a new chief executive officer for Twitter hours after firing Parag Agrawal.

The new Twitter CEO Matt Wallace announced this in Twitter handle on Friday, October 28, 2022.

“I am honored to be selected by Elon Musk as the new CEO of Twitter. Will work hard to protect free speech and integrate #Dogecoin!, Matt Wallace tweeted.

Recall that 1st News reported the sack of the former CEO of Twitter, Parag Agrawal, just hours after Musk took over the reins of Twitter. The same move also saw him fire Vijaya Gadde, head of legal policy, trust, and safety.

Musk, while alluding to the company’s iconic avian logo, that “the bird is liberated”.

The world’s wealthiest man,  had said he did not buy Twitter to make more money; but to open it up and make it a town square for free speech.

“I acquired Twitter because it is important to the future of civilization to have a common digital town square where a wide range of beliefs can be debated healthily without resorting to violence,” Musk said.

“There is currently great danger that social media will splinter into far right-wing and far left-wing echo chambers that generate more hate and divide our society. In the relentless pursuit of clicks, much of traditional media has fueled and catered to those polarized extremes; as they believe that is what brings in the money, but, in doing so, the opportunity for dialogue is lost.

“Twitter obviously cannot become a free-for-all hellscape where anything can be said without consequences!”, Musk clarified.

Analysts have speculated about the possible changes Musk may bring to the microblogging site. According to Forbes, the billionaire has mulled several changes, including charging a small fee and reducing the number of bots on the platform.

He may also revoke the lifetime bans of former president Donald Trump and rapper Kanye West.

Online Gender-Based Violence: Promoting Digital Rights For Women in Nigeria

Gender-based violence (GBV) in its various manifestations remains one of the most pervasive issues faced by Africa’s most populous nation. Since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, instances of GBV against women, who make up over 50% of the population, have risen significantly despite the efforts of first responders and various women’s rights advocates.

According to a Ministry of Women Affairs survey, 28% of Nigerian women aged 25-29 have
been subjected to some form of physical violence since age 15.
Tragically, GBV’s toll is felt physically, sexually and digitally, underscoring its comprehensive cost on women’s lives.

The Internet offers concrete opportunities to combat GBV and other types of gender
equalities. Unfortunately, these technology advancements, in hindsight, have made it
increasingly easier to commit gender-based crimes, targeting victims on a broader scale and
enhancing ways in which abusers can harm them. This has contributed to the persistence of an environment in which violence against women and girls appears to be normalized by society.

The overlap of online and offline behaviour is inevitable in the digital age.
The internet ensures and opens pathways to novel forms of abuse, including cyberstalking,
cyberbullying, the non-consensual distribution of intimate images, doxxing to cause harm alongside in-person violence, deep-fakes and even sexploitation, amongst others.
These new abusive behaviour modes are termed Online Gender-Based Violence (OGBV) or Technology-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence (TFGBV).

OGBV refers to instances of Gender Based Violence, be it intimate partner violence,
harassment, hate campaigns or even misinformation campaigns carried out in digital spaces, targeting people who use such spaces.
It is not necessarily an isolated form of violence but an extension of existent offline violence
carried over and proliferated via digital spaces.
As it is a relatively new concept, OGBV is largely misunderstood or unrecognized both by the
wider public and governments.

This attitude inevitably leads to its minimization. Its harms are not duly acknowledged, and consequently, adequate responses are not designed and implemented at an appropriate scale. OGBV as a threat to women’s rights online
Technologically facilitated gender-based violence occurs in Nigeria amid a climate of
pervasive gender-based violence.

The new digital era has given bigotry and misogyny new opportunities to thrive.
This is in addition to the different cultural makeup and traditions of Nigeria that have made toxic belief systems that reaffirm patriarchal views that seek to silence women and restrict their liberties in all settings, offline and online, even worse.

With 41% of women and 32% of men justifying domestic and physical abuse in at least one
circumstance in most low and middle-income countries globally, it’s not uncommon to find
such violence exacerbated in digital spaces.
Girls are expected to maintain decorum in the home, in public settings, and online. These expectations provide abusers with the justification they need to harass women and girls who don’t fit the stereotype. For most women, simply being online translates to being targeted with abusive messages and
harassment.

Violence against women online is often perpetuated via digital social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and Twitter.
This form of violence, especially suffered by women in the public eye and feminist activists, has a detrimental effect on their rights to freedom of expression, keeping them from actively participating in discourse and silencing their voices. Not only does it threaten their emotional and social well-being, it also threatens their physical safety offline, with threats often extending beyond digital spaces. There’s no escaping, that most of these forms of abuse won’t be possible at such an exaggerated
leve without technology.

The global village phenomenon facilitated by digital technologies means that distances between abusers and targets are shortened.
This potential for TFGBV also increases because most lives are now inevitably intertwined with the internet and its attendant culture. Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) in the digital age has also experienced an uptick as abusive partners can ensure emotional harm within digital spaces and monitor their partners via surveillance technologies. Such behaviour harms women via invasions of privacy and unsettling feelings as they worry about being watched against their will.

Similarly, cyberbullying and mobbing or networked harassment means more women are subjected to large-scale threats and sexist attacks through social media and other digital platforms. Such risks must be addressed with the same fervour dedicated to offline abuse. Tackling OGBV in Nigeria Violence against women, including online gender-based violence, threatens the progress of gender equality efforts.

Specific attention to the unique experiences of girls and young women on the web should be the basis for forging new and innovative strategies to combat the scourge of online violence. It is crucial to recognise the various forms of online abuse as they spring up, the most likely vulnerable groups and targets, and the harms they are susceptible to. While many cases of online violence go unreported in Nigeria, legislative reform must be implemented via adequate data gathering and reporting practices to tackle online abuse against women.

Law reforms like the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation(NDPR) and Data Protection Bill, Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) law, Cyber Crimes Act (2015), Penal Code, Criminal Code Act and Digital Rights and Freedom bill, which contain online privacy and protection laws, must be fully implemented and updated to safeguard women within the digital spaces.

This effort must extend to policy formulation that is up to date as technology continues to evolve. Perpetrators must be punished appropriately while sending out a zero-tolerance for OGBV message to all of society. For holistic change to occur at individual and systemic levels, technology companies, civil

society groups, the media and governments must collaborate and take action. If digital rights
are truly human rights, digital spaces must be safe and empowering for everyone.
