Ezekwesili questions Buhari’s mental state, calls for comprehensive evaluation

A former Minister of Education in Nigeria, Oby Ezekwesili, on Sunday, November 29, called for an assessment of the physical and mental capabilities of President Muhammadu Buhari over his handling of the nation’s affairs.

Ezekwesili made this assertion via her Twitter handle in the aftermath of the killing of 43 Nigerian farmers by Boko Haram on Sunday.

According to the former Minister, a medical panel should be set up to assess Buhari, adding that the “condition of Nigeria has become too grave for citizens to sit still and go about their duties without asking questions.”

“I think that at this stage and depth of fragility of the Nigeria-State, privacy has to yield ground to our right to know, as citizens, the state of health of Buhari,” Ezekwesili tweeted.

On other tweets, she posted: “We really must assess the physical or mental capability of Nigeria’s President to carry on the duties of office.

“Citizens can collectively push for an Independent Panel to help us make the critical medical determination of the state of mind and body of our President Buhari.

“The conditions of Nigeria have become too grave for us all to sit still and watch a train wreck in the making.

“As an extremely concerned citizen, I hereby demand a Medical Panel on Buhari since we obviously cannot trust the State House Physicians to provide us with accurate information.

“It is a reasonable demand now for citizens to have full disclosure on the state of health of Buhari.”

Meanwhile, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) says the nation’s electricity grid on Sunday, November 29, experienced multiple tripping, leading to the collapse of the system.

Mrs Ndidi Mbah, TCN’s General Manager, Public Affairs said this in a statement in Abuja on Sunday.

According to her, TCN regrets to inform electricity consumers nationwide that at 11:25 am today, the nation’s electricity grid experienced multiple tripping, which led to the collapse of the system.

Mbah said that TCN has since commenced grid restoration; power has been successfully restored to every part of the country, except Calabar; Ugwuaji; Markurdi; Jos; Gombe; Yola; and Maiduguri axes.

“Effort is, however, ongoing to ensure full restoration nationwide.

“We regret the inconvenience this has caused electricity consumers. Investigations would be conducted to establish the immediate and remote cause(s) of the multiple trippings as soon as the grid is fully restored.”

Pirates strike again, abduct 10 sailors off Bayelsa

Daredevil pirates have struck once again in Nigerian waters; kidnapping 10 crew members from a ship in the Gulf of Guinea.

The incident reportedly took place approximately 52 nautical miles north west of Brass oil terminal in Bayelsa.

Among the crew members kidnapped were four Indian seafarers, reports the Times of India. Other crew members who were taken hostage by the pirates include three Lebanese, two Egyptians; as well as one Cameroonian. However, two crew members from Cameroon were left on board the vessel by the pirates.

The attacked vessel is managed by Miro Shipping, Tripoli, Lebanon. The ship, a cargo vessel named ‘Milan’ was flagged off from the island of St Kitts.

Meanwhile, the attack took place between the evening of Wednesday, November 25 and the morning of Thursday, November 26. Authorities in India say contact has been established with the Nigerian government over the incident.

Captain Sanjay Prashar, general secretary, Himachal Seafarers’ Association, said security consultancies — Ambrey and Dryad Global — had told them about the abduction of the seafarers by the pirates.

“We have taken up the matter with the authorities concerned and the employer to ensure safe release of the hostages. Necessary consular assistance will also be rendered,” the high commission of India in Abuja told Capt Prashar.

Meanwhile, the vessel was in transit from Koko in Nigeria to Douala, Cameroon, when it came under attack. However, the exact time of the attack by the pirates remains unclear. Reports reveal that the pirates had boarded the vessel and spent some time on board before leaving with the kidnapped crew.

Plateau south bye-election: INEC won’t allow voters without face masks – REC

The Plateau State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Hussaini Halilu Pai, says voters without face masks would not be allowed to vote in the December 5 Plateau South Senatorial bye-election.

He noted that the Commission has made adequate preparation for free, fair, credible and transparent election.

Hon Pai disclosed this yesterday during a meeting of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on election security (ICCES, held at the Plateau State Police Command Jos.

‘Wearing of face mask is compulsory at the polling units and all election locations. Voters, party agents and other stakeholders will make provision for their face masks. Any voter without a face mask shall be turned away from the Polling Units.

‘Any voter showing symptoms of COVID-19 such as high temperature, coughing, sneezing among others will be requested to leave the queue or voting area and shall be attended to by designated officials.

‘Voters will be brought into the voting area periodically to prevent overcrowding.’

He noted that the Commission has approved the introduction of a new step to further strengthen the election management process and enhance the transparency of the system.

Pai said INEC is determined to address the concerns of results of the election and it has introduced a dedicated public portal, which is the INEC result viewing (IReV) that will enable Nigerians to view polling units results.

He said INEC has commenced training of the electoral officials to ensure transparency and credibility of the electoral process, saying vote-buying would not be tolerated during the poll.

Pai appealed to security agencies to ensure that INEC officials and the National Youth Service Corps members participating in the poll are adequately protected.

The Police Commissioner, Plateau State, Edward Egbuka, said the security agencies would be mobilized to protect the electoral officials and the voters for a hitch-free exercise.

He noted that the security would give the Commission the needed support before, during and after the poll.

Sudan’s former PM Sadiq al-Mahdi dies of coronavirus

On Thursday, Sudan’s former prime minister and top opposition figure Sadiq al-Mahdi died from COVID-19, his party said.

The 84-year-old was the country’s last democratically elected prime minister before he was toppled in 1989; by now-ousted president Omar al-Bashir in an Islamist-backed military coup.

The leader of the moderate Islamist National Umma Party was transferred to the United Arab Emirates for treatment three weeks ago after being hospitalized in Sudan and testing positive for Covid-19.

“We offer our condolences to the Sudanese people over his death,” the party said in a statement.

Mahdi was a staunch opposition figure during Bashir’s long rule and threw his weight behind a mass-protest movement; that eventually prompted the military to overthrow the president last year.

Since his ouster, Bashir has been jailed in Khartoum’s high security Kober prison; and was found guilty last December of corruption.

He is currently on trial in Khartoum for his role in the 1989 coup that brought him to power; and the International Criminal Court (ICC) has charged him for alleged war crimes in the Darfur war that began in 2003.

If convicted, Bashir and his co-accused — including former top officials — could face the death penalty.

Sudan has so far recorded nearly 17,000 coronavirus cases including more than 1,200 deaths.

Sultan decries insecurity in North, says bandits move freely, buy things in market unchallenged

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, has decried the state of insecurity in the North, describing the region as the worst place to live in Nigeria as bandits now move freely unchallenged.

The Sultan made this known on Thursday in Abuja.

4wardwego reports that he was speaking at the fourth quarterly meeting of the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council.

The bandits who called on the security agencies to rise up to challenge, disclosed that armed bandits can be seen in markets, buying items and openly displaying their weapons. Further, he revealed that bandits now move from house to house, village to village, market to market; with AK-47 rifles.

He added that they can be seen in the market, freely purchasing foodstuffs and even collecting  change.

“People think North is safe but that assumption is not true. In fact, it’s the worst place to be in this country because bandits go around in the villages, households and markets with their AK 47 and nobody is challenging them.

“They stop at the market, buy things, pay and collect change, with their weapons openly displayed. These are facts I know because I am at the centre of it.

“Security situation in Northern Nigeria has assumed a worrisome situation. Few weeks ago, over 76 persons were killed in a community in Sokoto in a day. I was there with the governor to commiserate with the affected community.

“Unfortunately, you don’t hear these stories in the media because it’s in the North. We have accepted the fact that the North does not have strong media to report the atrocities of these bandits.

“I am not only a traditional ruler. I am also a religious leader. So, I am in a better place to tell the story. I can speak for the North in this regard because I am fully aware of the security challenges there. We have to sincerely and seriously find solutions to the problem. Otherwise, we will find ourselves soon, in a situation where we would lose sleep because of insecurity.”

Thousands bid farewell as Diego Maradona is laid to rest

Diego Maradona football legend has been buried in a private ceremony after a day of emotional scenes in the Argentine capital Buenos Aires.

Relatives and close friends attended the final ceremony on Thursday.

Earlier huge crowds turned out to pay their respects, with many weeping, blowing kisses; and also praying as they filed past his coffin.

Maradona died of a heart attack on Wednesday aged 60.

His death triggered mourning around the world; but nowhere was it felt more fiercely than in a country that saw him as a national hero.

Maradona’s coffin – draped in Argentina’s national flag and football shirt; bearing his trademark number 10 on the back – was on public display at the presidential palace on Thursday.

By mid-afternoon queues stretched back for more than a kilometre; and police clashed with mourners as they tried to close off the palace in anticipation of the wake scheduled for 16:00 local time (19:00 GMT).

There were reports of tear gas; as well as rubber bullets being used as officers in riot gear struggled to hold back the crowd.

One well-wisher, Rubén Hernández, thought the police had overreacted.

“We were calm lining up and suddenly, the police started to fire rubber bullets,” he said, quoted by Reuters news agency. “Crazy, I just want to say goodbye to Diego.”

Authorities were eventually forced to stop public viewing of the coffin to keep the peace.

The motorised funeral cortege drove his body to the Bella Vista cemetery on the outskirts of the city; where Diego Maradona was buried next to the graves of his parents.
