Gov. Wike denies using military to murder Igbos in Oyigbo

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State on Monday, November 2, slammed reports claiming he ordered the Military to kill Igbos in the Oyigbo area of the oil-rich state.

Wike further stated that members of the proscribed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) had destroyed properties in the area and killed people while reiterating that the imposition of a curfew in Oyigbo was to restore order to the area.

“So, it’s not true that I order the military to kill Igbos in Oyigbo. When did I become a friend to the Military?” Wike asked.

“So what about the Igbos living elsewhere in the state are they also being killed?”

The narrative that Igbos were being killed by the Military, Wike argued, is to move attention from the nefarious activities of the pro-Biafra group in Oyigbo.

He maintained that this is not the first time the pro-Biafra group is using the area as a launching pad.

“IPOB added a new dimension this time. They killed 6 Army Officers; and burnt one. They killed four Police Officers,” he explained.

“They destroyed all the Police Stations and Court Buildings. What offense did we commit as a state?”

Furthermore, Wike added that he has “no relationship with the Army or the Police, I do not command them. They change Commissioner of Police every time. How will I begin to direct the Army that I do not give instruction?”

Wike who expressed anger at IPOB’s hoisting of its flag in a school in Komkom Town vowed not to allow “criminals” to destroy Rivers State.

“I will not fold my arms and watch criminals destroy my state if those few criminals are Igbos then they should know that I will not allow them,” he warned.

“They made attempt to rename a local government in my state. That alone is a signal. I will not agree to that. I know who is doing all these; who has told them to rise, protest against Wike.”

Northern Governors, traditional rulers throw weight behind social media regulation

The Northern Governors Forum have publicly declared their expressed support for the ongoing efforts to regulate the social media.

This was disclosed after a meeting of the Forum on Monday, November 1, 2020.

The Forum held that the move is essential in order to check the spread of fake news in Nigeria. Equally important, the Northern Governors made this known in a communique issued by its Chairman and Governor of Plateau; Mr Simon Lalong, after its meeting in Kaduna with traditional rulers and other key stakeholders in the region.

Specifically, the meeting appraised the impact of an uncontrolled social media in spreading fake news. Further, it declared its backing for major control mechanisms and censorship of social media practice in Nigeria. In addition, the Northern Governors voted for police reforms in order to strengthen the institution.

A communique released at the end of the meeting reads in part; “Forum appreciates the major reforms going on in the Police Force and pledges to support Mr President on this course. The meeting resolves to support the Nigerian Police Force to serve the country better and calls for the strengthening of trust between the people and the Police.’’

Also, the Northern Governors hailed traditional rulers for their roles in containing the #End SARS protests in the region; even as they agreed that traditional rulers should be given formal roles in Nigeria’s governance structure.

Meanwhile, Chairman, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, on Monday, November 2, revealed that seven Nigerians who participated in the #EndSARS protest in Egypt have been slated for deportation.

Dabiri-Erewa made this disclosure via her Twitter handle.

1st News had reported that that eight Nigerians were arrested in Cairo, Egypt for protesting against police brutality, extra-judicial killings, and bad governance in their country.

After their arrest, many Nigerians appealed to NIDCOM to intervene and ensure the release of the Nigerians.

While giving an update on Monday, Dabiri-Erewa said seven of those detained are to be deported for “lack of resident permits”.

Lagos APC, PDP in war of words over call on Sanwo-Olu to resign

The ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) in Lagos State and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have been involved in a war of words over calls on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to resign.

The APC says Sanwo-Olu mains undaunted; adding that he would not be distracted from delivering on his social contract with the people.

The APC Publicity Secretary in Lagos, Seye Oladejo made this known on Sunday. He was reacting to calls by the PDP to Sanwo-Olu to consider resignation. This is in view of what PDP called “the collapse of good governance in the state; particularly in the last 10 days”.

Equally important, Oladejo said the PDP call is an invitation to anarchy.

Further, he said the dream of PDP is to govern Lagos state through the back door; adding that persistent rejection at the polls remains a nightmare for the party.

Oladejo said that the fact that the wanton destruction of public properties, utilities and individual investment in Lagos in the aftermath of #EndSARS protest had thrown the PDP camp into unprecedented jubilation was loaded with meaning.

“The PDP in Lagos state that suddenly came to life in the past week owes the innocent members of the public detailed explanation about its ignominious and condemnable role in the mayhem.

“The intermittent falsehood about governance in the state fed to the unsuspecting public fanned the ember of the unprecedented violence which has left in its wake sorrow, tears and blood.

Sanwo-Olu

“The daylight murder of police officers and the razing of several stations across the state has; no doubt taken its toll on our security architecture. But the state government is working assiduously to provide temporary accommodation to forestall the breakdown of law and order. We are persuaded by the firm assurance of the governor to revamp our losses in no time,” he said.

The Lagos APC scribe cited the flag-off ceremony of the reconstruction of the Eleko to Epe T- junction road; describing it as an eloquent testimony that governance is not on recess in the state.

Also, he added that the security of lives and property and all-round development remain the priority of the Lagos State government.

Oladejo said that the unfortunate event of the past two weeks which took off as a peaceful nationwide protest and snowballed to the breakdown of law and order remained regrettable and distasteful and should not be used to play politics.

Meanwhile, calling on the governor to resign, the PDP said in a statement on Sunday, by its Publicity Secretary; Taofik Gani, that the governor seemed to have been overwhelmed by the current challenges facing the state.

Specifically, the PDP spokesman said: “This counseling is in good faith and for the overall interest of the state.

“If this state continues to experience the collapses in next 72 hours; it may suffer a declaration of state of emergency, a step that would likely deprive all.

“The PDP is even more expedient for the governor to welcome the counsel to step aside now that the Nigerian Army has revealed him as the person who invited the soldiers to go and quell the Lekki protests.”

“Obviously, Lagosians can no longer trust a governor who denies his conspiracy actions in government.”

Further, he stated that Sanwo-Olu has no moral standing worthy of being proud of; adding that he should admit this and honourably leave the stage as governor of the state.
