Catholic Priest dies during Sunday mass

A Cameroonian Catholic Priest has slumped and died on the altar during a Sunday mass in Diedo.

The Catholic Priest identified as Rev. Fr. Jude slumped while he was preaching the Homily on Sunday, August 30. He was seen wearing a face mask before he paused for a moment and appeared to be struggling to breathe.

Moments later, the Priest slumped on the altar with other priests seen rushing to his aid as he fell.

Until his demise on Sunday, he was the Spiritual Director of Catholic Men Association (CMA) in Deido.

Former Chairman of National Human Rights Commission and lawyer, Chidi Odinkalu shared the video on Twitter on Sunday August 30 and wrote;

“Rev. Fr Jude., CMA, Spiritual Director of CMA Deido, in Cameroon’s commercial capital, Douala, was preaching the Homily at Mass earlier today when this happened #RIP.’

In other news, Pope Francis has confirmed reports for the first time that a particular Malawian Diocesan impregnated 30 nuns.

According to Pope Francis, he revealed that priests and bishops in the Catholic Church had sexually abused nuns; and that some priests have been suspended on several occassions.

Specifically, several examples came from Africa; where priests were said to have turned to nuns for sex during the spread of AIDS.

One sister at the time, Maura O’Donohue, wrote of a case in Malawi; where priests impregnated nearly 30 sisters in one congregation. When they complained to the archbishop, she wrote, they were replaced.

Married man commits suicide in Cross Rivers

A married man identified as Chinedu Peter Ogwa has reportedly died moments after he swallowed rat poison.

4wardwego gathered that the 45-year-old married man who hails from Cross Rivers took his own life in his home on Thursday, August 27.

According to Chidinma Ogwa, wife of the deceased, she said her husband started behaving strangely on Monday, August 24.

She said he left behind a suicide note where he appealed to her and their children to forgive him.

She said her late husband blamed his action on frustration, lack of business success, as well as inability to recover his debts among others.

Read her statement below.

“It all started on the afternoon of Monday, August, 25, 2020, when he called me from where he was then to ask me what we are going to eat that night.

I told him not to worry, that I had already prepared soup.

After a while he came back and met me washing clothes outside, he stood beside me and began to laugh.

I was like why are you laughing, he was still laughing, then he said to me ‘you did not know what I tried to do today’?

I asked what did you tried to do and he said to me he was going to take rat poison so he could die and I shouted ‘rat poison, for what’?

Then he told me that he was frustrated, people are owing him here and there, his business was not making any headway for 15 years he has been in business.

Nothing to show for it, yet on top of that, people are laying false accusation against him that he did this and did that.”

“He continued and said; ‘today I had bought the poison and holding it in my hand to take I remembered you and my children.

What people will say to you, how they will laugh at you and I and concluding that they have succeeded then I dropped it and walked away and rather decided to hand over everything to God’.

And I agreed with him he took the best of decisions; and told him not to mind people and their mouths.

This life is a battle, everybody has problems.

It is not just us; please do not try that again’ and he promised never to do it again.

Then he began to admire me and our children; and I laughed and we continued.”

She said her husband decided to take his life; when she and the kids went to church for service that night.

His body has since been deposited in the morgue.

“Anyone who keenly followed the process that culminated in today’s event will attest to the fact that my election victory was neither my making nor that of any mortal. It was divinely orchestrated by the Lord Almighty, the creator of the universe; who oversees the affairs of men, and in whom we live and move and have our being. I return all praises to Him.

Akpata added that his administration would enter into partnerships with the judiciary. Also, he said partnerships would be explored with other stakeholders in the Nigerian criminal justice sector. This, he noted, is with a view to undertake a holistic reform of the system.

“I welcome and accept, on behalf of the NBA; the recent call for collaboration in this regard by the Attorney-General of the Federation.

“I accept the invitation of the Senate President and the Speaker of the House of Representatives; to partner with the National Assembly to reform our laws through strategic amendments; in order to bring the laws up to global standards.

“Just yesterday, the Senate Ad-hoc Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution announced the commencement of the process for the further alteration of the Constitution, and called on professional bodies and interest groups to submit memoranda for that purpose.

Ganduje set to sign death warrant of convicted Kano musician

Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State, says he will sign the execution warrant of a 30-year-old man, Yahaya Sharif-Aminu, sentenced to death by hanging by an Upper Shari’a Court in the state.

Aminu was sentenced to death by the Court after his conviction of blasphemous remarks against Prophet Muhammad, under Section 382 (b) of the Kano State Penal Code Law 2000.

Ganduje, who spoke at a special stakeholder forum on Thursday, August 27, said that he would not hesitate to sign the execution order at the expiration of the 30-day grace if the convict failed to appeal the judgment.

“If the 30 days elapsed and the convict has not appealed; and there is no evidence that he had appealed; I will not waste time in signing the warrant for the execution of the man who blasphemed our Holy Prophet of Islam.

“Lawyers just told us that the case could go up to the Supreme Court. So if that happens, I will not waste time to abide by the verdict right away,” he said.‎

The governor also lamented that the issue of blasphemy was taking to its toll in recent times; stressing that the government would not rest on its oars until it addresses the menace.

In their separate remarks, some Islamic clerics fully supported the governor to sign the death warrant.

The clerics representing different sects, described the action as the only way forward to avert future occurrence, adding it would serve as a deterrent to others.

They also urged the governor not to be distracted by activities of the human right organisations; stressing that Islam had outlined clear punishment against any person that committed blasphemy. ‎

Aminu Gadanya, Chairman, Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in the state, said the association had supported the judgement; in view of the fact that the trial was based on the provisions of the law as well as fair hearing.

He noted that the judgement was done within the jurisdiction of the Court; while the convict has the right to appeal. ‎

‎Garba said the Court convicted the man under Section 382 (b) of the Kano state Penal Code Law 2000; also adding that even the supreme court had upheld the death penalty for blasphemy.
