Lagosians dying of hunger, plead with Gov. Sanwo-Olu to lift market free days

Lagosians, as residents of Lagos State, are popularly known, have expressed concerns over the subsisting regime of three weekly market free days in the state, a development they say is worsening hunger pangs and having a detrimental effect on the fight against COVID-19.

Equally important, some of the respondents; among whom are traders, have lamented its impact on their means of livelihoods.

4wardwego reports that Lagosians currently observe three market free days in a week.

Food markets are allowed to open only on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. On the other hand, non-food markets are only open on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays; all between the hours of 9am and 3pm. Therefore, all food markets across the state are shut on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. In the same vein, non-food markets are shut on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

The development is part of the subsisting streamlined guidelines on gradual easing of the COVID-19 lockdown by the Lagos State Government; especially as they relate to markets in the state.

However, Lagosians have bemoaned the existing practice.

In separate chats with 1st News, many respondents who commended Lagos State Governor; Babajide Sanwo-Olu for doing an excellent job so far in governance and in the fight against COVID-19; nevertheless, expressed the sentiments that the weekly market free days are worsening the plight of residents in the state who have to contend with the congestion witnessed on the three days on which the markets are open. Specifically, they hold that the situation is not only subjecting residents to hardship; but also tightening the financial noose around the neck of millions in the state while also contributing to a potential rise in community transmission of COVID-19 infections.

Consequently, they have called on Sanwo-Olu to consider lifting the restrictions.

Mrs. Abike Adebusuyi, a vegetables trader in the popular Mile 12 market; told 1st News she has suffered huge losses as a result of the market free days.

‘‘I sell items such as tomatoes, pepper, leafy vegetables and other perishables in this market. I must confess that this practice of only coming to the market three days in a week is not helping our business at all. Most times, I have had to discard these items when they go bad, incurring huge losses in the process.

‘‘In fact, once it is approaching closing hours on days when the market is open; I often try to sell off the majority of my goods that may not last until the next market day at very ridiculous prices. This is in order to ensure that I do not lose all. Selling it below my cost price is also not ideal. But what can I do? I plead with Governor Sanwo-Olu to reconsider lifting the market free days as it is gradually killing off our businesses.

‘‘I am not the only one suffering this pain. Many of us here are bearing the same huge burden. The long days of the lockdown was very tough for us. Now that markets are open, we are still going hungry along with our children due to this market free days’ policy. Please help us beg our dear Governor to consider us,’’ she pleaded.

Another Lagosian, a trader at Computer Village, who chose to speak on condition of anonymity; says the current situation is making life very difficult.

‘‘It is very tough. For several months, we were on lockdown and our shops were all locked up. Some of us are looking for money to renew our rents in these shops which have expired. We are also struggling to raise money to feed the children at home and also prepare to pay their school fees when school resumes.

‘‘Yet, we still have to cope with being unable to come to the market every day. Even worse, on the days we come here; some louts come to chase us out even before the specified closing hours. They say they are acting on the instructions of the state government. We are really suffering and I only hope that the government can do something about it.’’

A banker, Nkem Agu, says she has to juggle and plan her official and family commitments; adding that the inability to access the food markets on certain days is a major hassle for her.

‘‘I must commend Governor Sanwo-Olu for the good job he has done so far in managing the COVID-19 crisis. However, I think the governor should please allow us have full access to the markets. The current three-day on, three-day off practice is a source of stress. The markets are heavily congested, traffic is terrible and the risk of getting infected with COVID-19 is even higher,’’ she stated.

On his part, Danladi Rabiu, a forex dealer; is of the view that the current regime of market free days is no longer needed.

Lagosians

‘‘While I understand that the market free days’ guidelines came into force as part of the eased lockdown regulations; personally I do not think it is still required. We are on the verge of fully reopening the economy. Local flights have resumed and international flights will soon follow suit. By now, I had expected that the government would have lifted the restrictions on the market days; by allowing us trade every day.

‘‘It (the market free days) is seriously affecting our business and also hampering our ability to service our customers. In view of the security implications of our business and the need to be proactive in meeting customers’ needs; having to contend with not being able to come to the office three days in a week has been a huge challenge,’’ he revealed.

Meanwhile, a public health expert, Abiodun Igho, affirms that the market free days’ restrictions hold greater risk of community transmission of COVID-19.

‘‘Going by the current guidelines, markets are only open three days in a week. It is actually worsening community transmission of COVID-19. This is because Lagosians always experience a huge crush at these markets on the day they are open. There is a constant mad rush and many people are no longer wearing face-masks; or observing social distancing.

‘‘So, I urge the Lagos State Governor to kindly reconsider and rescind the restrictions. It will go a long way in easing hardship on Lagosians and further reducing community spread of COVID-19.’’

Buhari bullish, says COVID-19 will be defeated like polio

President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed optimism that African countries can defeat COVID-19 in the same manner it eradicated the Wild Polio Virus on the continent.

Buhari made the declaration on Tuesday, August 25, 2020 at the State House, Abuja.

Equally important, the President was speaking at the formal certification of the Wild Polio Virus eradication in the African region. Specifically, his speech came during the virtual session of the 70th World Health Organisation (WHO) regional committee for Africa.

‘‘I recall that shortly after assuming office in May 2015; I made a pledge to Nigerians that I would not bequeath a polio-endemic country to my successor.

‘‘This certification is, therefore, a personal fulfilment of that pledge to not only Nigerians; but to all Africans,’’ Buhari said.

‘‘At a time when the global community is battling the COVID-19 pandemic; this achievement strengthens my conviction that with the requisite political will, investments and strategies; as well as citizens’ commitment, we will flatten the epidemic curve.

‘‘I can affirm the commitment of all African leaders to this course of action,’’ the president said in his remarks while celebrating the historic feat.

Further, President Buhari assured the global community that Nigeria would sustain the momentum; adding that the country would leverage on the lessons learnt from polio eradication to strengthen her health system; especially primary health care, and prioritise health security.

He revealed that Nigeria used data systems, community engagement and innovative technology to monitor and predict the occurrence of polio outbreaks. Buhari affirmed that the same skills and tools are being used to fight COVID-19; as well as the multi-country outbreaks of Circulating Vaccine Derived Polio Viruses.

The president, who described the achievement as a truly historic moment; commended President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa and Chairman of the African Union; under whose leadership, Africa crossed the finishing line.

He recounted that the journey to eradicate the virus dated back to 1996; when Nelson Mandela of blessed memory launched the Kick Polio out of Africa campaign.

The Nigerian leader also used the occasion to congratulate Dr Matshidiso Moeti; as well as the WHO Regional Committee for Africa on their untiring efforts; contributions and leadership towards polio eradication in Africa.

‘‘We must guard this achievement of the eradication of Wild Polio Virus in Africa jealously and ensure that we take all necessary steps to prevent a resurgence of this dreaded disease.

‘‘This will require maintaining the highest quality of surveillance and sustaining population immunity; through increasing routine immunization coverage and supplemental immunization activities.

‘‘It is heartwarming to note how the strong partnership between the Global Polio Eradication Initiative and Governments of African countries worked tirelessly and collaboratively to deliver this success,’’ he said.

Furthermore, the president commended the decades of hard work and resilience of health workers and volunteers across the region; Ministers of Health and other stakeholders such as political, traditional, religious and community leaders; who provided the required support and leadership.

‘‘I would also like to appreciate the invaluable support of our donors, development and local partners; such as WHO, UNICEF, Rotary International, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Aliko Dangote Foundation; United States Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, GAVI, USAID, European Union, Emeka Offor Foundation; the Japanese and German Governments, numerous NGOs and faith-based organisations.

‘‘These are truly the heroes and heroines of many battles that have made us triumphant in the war against polio,’’ he said.

COVID-19: No date yet for schools’ resumption, says FG

In view of the ongoing battle against the rampaging COVID-19 pandemic, the Federal Government has restated the uncertainty over a firm date for the resumption of learning activities in schools across the nation.

This was disclosed by the Minister of State for Education, Mr. Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba.

Specifically, the Minister revealed that no date has been fixed yet for full schools’ resumption. However, he disclosed that the Federal Government had continued to engage stakeholders on the matter.

Nwajiuba stated this during the briefing of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 on Monday in Abuja.

Nevertheless, he expressed optimism that the date for resumption was around the corner; adding, that ‘‘we are not going to be brandishing dates.” He disclosed that himself and the Minister of Education; Adamu Adamu, met some stakeholders in tertiary education earlier in the day on the issue.

Nwajiuba said about 78 privately-owned universities were insisting that they were ready for resumption. On the other hand, he stated that the response from government-owned universities was still “50-50.” Furthermore, he said that after aggregating opinions; he would return to the PTF to review the situation and then go ahead to make a pronouncement.

The minister urged students of tertiary institutions; who were protesting the continued closure of their schools to be a little more patient with the government.

Meanwhile, the concerns over the resumption of schools come as Nigeria racked up over 1000 COVID-19 deaths.

The country hit the 1000-mark milestone in COVID-19 related deaths on Sunday, August 23, 2020. Furthermore, a lot of reservations have been expressed in several quarters over the proposed resumption of schools. A school of thought is of the opinion that it may spark an explosion in new cases of COVID-19 across the country.

Also, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has remained one of the foremost voices warning the government against reopening schools now.

Dogara refutes reports of 2023 presidential ambition

The ex-Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, on Sunday, August 23, slammed reports of his intention to vie for the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential ticket alongside the party’s national leader, Bola Tinubu, in 2023.

1st News had reported that Dogara left the APC ahead of the 2019 presidential election; but returned to the party on July 24.

In a statement titled: “titled ‘Rt. Hon. Dogara is concerned about tackling the challenges of our nationhood than 2023,” issued by his media aide, Turaki Hassan; the ex-deputy speaker alleged that the reports were sponsored by the Bauchi State government.

The statement reads: “It has come to our notice that stories and images are being circulated on social media; to the effect that His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara is running for the office of the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria; with the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for President in 2023.

“Our initial decision was to ignore them since they are utterly baseless but it appears that the promoters of this fallacy are unrelenting in spreading the falsehood and have now succeeded in making it sound believable to the extent that even some conventional and ‘credible’ media platforms are beginning to take it up.

“In order to stop the further spread of this deliberate mischief, whose objective is yet to be ascertained, the public is hereby advised to disregard and totally discountenance the purported story and pictures for what they are – the handiwork of mischief-makers.

“These stories and pictures, we understand, are being sponsored by officials of the Bauchi State government in their desperate bid to lend credence to the infantile delusions of their principal, captured in his ludicrous postulations that Rt. Hon. Dogara left the PDP just because he was ‘deceived’ by the APC with the promise of a position come 2023.”

Trans man pregnant, set to give birth

Myles Brady Davis is a Trans man who is prepared to give birth to a healthy baby with his partner, Precious.

In a recent video making the rounds on social media, the trans man and his partner spoke about his pregnancy—and why his story isn’t so out of the ordinary.

When Myles Brady Davis found out he was pregnant, he rejoiced with his wife, Precious. They held hands, they teared up.

They sank to the living room floor and melted into each other, just savoring the moment.

“Yeah, it was beautiful,” said Brady Davis. “But then I didn’t believe it, and I went to Walgreen’s and I bought, like, 12 tests.”

Myles reveals he comes from a long line of men who knew their soulmates at first sight; he said, and he was no different.

In 2014, he’d recently returned to Chicago and was volunteering for an LGBTQ organization on the South Side.

The executive director gave him a list of people to contact for help with a project, and the last name on the list was Precious Davis, then an LGBTQ youth outreach coordinator at the Center on Halsted.

The first time he saw her, she was coming down the stairs at her workplace to meet him.

“I just saw my future flash before my eyes,” he said, “I saw her in the park with kids. I saw the life we live now, I just saw my happiness in her.”

Myles always knew he wanted to have children. Precious, who was given up for adoption when she was 4 and has lived in foster care, said motherhood wasn’t on her radar.
