Plateau State Police Pledges Reform Following PMAN Concerns Over Harassment of Entertainers

The Plateau State Police Command has taken steps to reassure entertainers in the state after the Performing Musicians and Employers Association of Nigeria (PMAN), Plateau State Chapter, raised concerns about alleged targeted harassment of musicians and creatives. The police have committed to addressing these grievances and fostering better relations with the entertainment community.

In a recent meeting with PMAN executives led by Comrade Color Humphrey Iroegbu, the PMAN Governor of Plateau State, Commissioner of Police (CP) Emmanuel Adesina acknowledged the issues presented by the association. PMAN had previously highlighted instances where law enforcement officers allegedly intimidated and wrongfully arrested musicians, often targeting them based on their appearance and hairstyles. The association warned that such actions were detrimental to the morale and safety of entertainers in the state.

CP Adesina assured the PMAN representatives that the command is taking proactive steps to address the complaints. He emphasized the importance of strong police-community relations and encouraged citizens to report any misconduct by police personnel. “We have already taken some steps to correct these issues,” CP Adesina stated. “My number and those of other senior officers have been provided to PMAN so that in case of any future incidents, they can reach out directly.”

Comrade Iroegbu expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the meeting, describing it as one of the best responses PMAN has received from law enforcement. “With this assurance, our artists and creatives on the Plateau can go about their business, perform, and live without fear of harassment or intimidation,” he said. “We are grateful to the Commissioner of Police and the entire force for their commitment to protecting our rights.”

He also advised artists to always carry identification and remain calm and cooperative during any interactions with the police. “It’s important that every artist has their ID card with them, especially when staying out late,” Iroegbu added. “We should avoid escalating situations and always engage with the police respectfully.”

The meeting marks a positive step towards resolving tensions between the Plateau State Police and the entertainment industry, with both sides hopeful for improved relations in the future.

SEPI’s Seminar Empowers Youth for Wealth Creation and Sustainable Development

In honor of the 2024 International Youth Day, the Social Empowerment and Peace Initiative (SEPI) hosted a pivotal seminar themed “Leveraging Technology and Social Media for Wealth Creation and Sustainable Development” at Greatlinks Hotels in Rayfield, Jos, Plateau State. The event aligned with this year’s International Youth Day theme, “Click to Progress: Youth Digital Pathways for Sustainable Development,” and sought to inspire young Nigerians to tap into the vast potential of digital innovation to address the growing challenge of youth unemployment.

Comrade Friday Dalyop Bako, Executive Director of SEPI and Chairman of Plateau Bloggers and Online Media (PLABOMA), led the seminar with a powerful message on the need for youth to shift their focus from casual to strategic use of social media. He emphasized that while many young people engage with these platforms primarily for entertainment, they often overlook the tremendous opportunities for economic empowerment and career development. Bako stressed that with the right skills and mindset, social media can be a transformative tool for combating unemployment and driving sustainable development.

The seminar also featured key insights from Mr. Ibrahim Kallamu, CEO of 4wardwego and a digital marketer, who highlighted the critical role of technology in sustainable development. Kallamu discussed how digital skills, such as web development and cybersecurity, are increasingly in demand and can significantly contribute to economic growth. He further explained how technology enhances access to quality education and healthcare, with digital platforms revolutionizing both sectors.

Renowned blogger and CEO of MTB Multimedia, Mr. Matthew Tegha, focused on the wealth-creation potential of social media. He advised participants to use social media purposefully, whether for networking, business, or content creation. Tegha highlighted the global reach and low-cost entry points of social media platforms, which enable users to turn their digital presence into profitable ventures.

Attendees praised the seminar for its eye-opening content, with many expressing a renewed understanding of how to leverage technology and social media for personal and professional growth. The event underscored the importance of digital literacy in empowering youth to contribute to Nigeria’s sustainable development goals.
