#RevolutionNow: Opinions divided as Burna Boy declines Sowore’s offer to protest

The #RevolutionNow protest has been scheduled to take place on Thursday, October 1st, Nigeria’s 60th Independence Anniversary.

The #RevolutionNow protest is led by the former presidential candidate and Sahara Reporters publisher, Omoyele Sowore.

It was first staged on August 5, 2019, and the second edition of the same date this year, held across major cities in Nigeria. However, the peaceful demonstrations have been met with a clampdown by security operatives, resulting in arrests and incarceration of many protesters.

The demonstration is to demand the reversal of “anti-people policies implemented by the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration.”

“These harsh policies that have bored a burdensome hole into the pockets of the Nigerian people are coming at a time when citizens are recovering from the adverse effect of the COVID-19 pandemic, a global health crisis that was also mismanaged by the Buhari’s government further plunging already struggling citizens into deeper financial problems.

“It also comes at a time when there is an unprecedented dictatorial-style crackdown on free speech, dissent, activism, journalism and the right to associate and congregate peacefully and protest.”

Equally important, the #RevolutionNow protest march will take place in all 36 states across Nigeria as well as some places in London; Sweden; Netherlands, San Francisco; New York; Washington DC; also Germany; as well as Canada.

On Tuesday afternoon, Sowore challenged Burna Boy, a prominent Nigerian Afrobeats artiste to join his agenda on October 1st.

Omoyele Sowore made the call with a message he shared on social media.

According to the former presidential candidate, many describe Burna Boy as a revolutionary musician and he has been likened to the late Afrobeat legend, Fela Kuti.

He wrote on Instagram;

“@burnaboygram everywhere I turn people describe you as a revolutionary musician.

”The foreign media even celebrate you compare you to Fela Kuti; but I am yet to see you lead anyone to a police station carrying a coffin for head of state! Join #Oct1stProtest”

Burna Boy has since declined the offer; stating that he does not trust politicians. His response has since divided opinions among Nigerians on social media.

A certain section of Twitter users are dragging him for being unable to live up to his African Giant pseudonym.

Here is what they are saying;

Anambra couple arrested after pouring hot water maid’s body

An Anambra couple has been arrested after they reportedly spilt hot water on the body of their 8-year-old maid’s body for licking milk.

The Anambra couple is identified as Mrs Ogochukwu Anichukwu and Mr Emmanuel Anichukwu were accused of flogging the little girl mercilessly and starving her repeatedly.

It was further gathered that the girl has been seen several times eating sand because of starvation.

The Anambra couple was recently dragged to the human right legal initiative in Ekwulobia, Anambra State; this is following the injury the 8-year-old maidservant sustained after allegedly being poured hot water by Ogochukwu.

The lady reportedly poured hot water on the maidservant because she caught her licking milk meant for her baby.

Facebook user, Jane Iyke who shared their photos wrote;

“This case is before Human right legal initiative Ekwulobia Anambra State already but if you know this girl Mma from Awgu Enugu State.

kindly advise the family to come and pick their child before they bring her back in the corpse.

This child is living with Mrs Ogochukwu Anichukwu from Ndikelionwu and Mr. Emmanuel Anichukwu from Enugu State as a househelp in Nanka Anambra state.

This girl’s offence was that she licked the milk meant for her baby; she poured hot water on her and locked her inside so that neighbors won’t see her in that state.

The neighbours confirmed to have seen the girl eating sand severally because of starvation. She’s now used to flogging which was why the woman used hot water this time.

The neighbour that reported to the Human rights legal aid according to them entered their house unexpectedly and caught Mma trying to run inside to avoid been seen as she was vehemently warned not to allow anyone see her.

The girl is now in the hospital for proper medical care.

Zulum: Army pledges to work with Borno Gov to ensure successful resettlement of IDPs

The Nigerian Army says it is fully in support of the ongoing efforts of the Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, to relocate and resettle the internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the state back to their ancestral homes.

The Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Col. Sagir Musa, disclosed this in a statement on Monday, September 29, in Abuja.

Musa described the effort of Governor Zulum aimed at resettling the IDPs as a commendable and the right step in the desired direction.

He said that the Nigerian army being a patriotic and key agency in the war against terrorism in the North East would ensure the actualisation of the governor’s desire.

According to him, the Army hereby declares its unflinching commitment to the relocation of the IDPs to their original abodes.

Musa also disclosed that the Theatre Command had been directed to do all it takes to ensure the successful and seamless relocation of the affected people in the state.

According to him, the relocation of these law-abiding Nigerians to their towns, villages, and homes at this stage of the war against insurgency is highly strategic and a decisive political decision.

He said that it was required to actualize both the political and military objectives of the war towards the ultimate end of restoring peace and stability to Borno and the NE region.

“The NA commiserates with the Borno State Governor Zulum, families of all the fallen heroes (military, police and civilian victims) as a result of the dastardly act of ambush by BHT group along Monguno – Kross Kauwa Road.

“The NA wishes to once again commend His Excellency Governor Zulum and Borno State Government for this important step and to reassure the nation of its determination and commitment to the successful prosecution of the war on terror in Nigeria.

“Also, the NA urges other stakeholders in this endeavour to join hands and redouble their efforts towards restoring peace to our dear fatherland Nigeria,” he said.

“I can confirm that we recorded a murder case that occurred in Buvuma area in Gwanda.

Criticism trails signing of new Police Bill, empowers officials to arrest without warrant

President Muhammadu Buhari has signed into law the Nigeria Police Bill, 2020.

This was contained in a memo dated September 16, 2020, signed by the president who communicated his assent to the Police Bill to the National Assembly, through the Clerk of the legislature.

According to a detailed analysis by 1st News, the Act repeals the Police Act Cap. P19. Laws of the Federation, 2004, and provides for a more effective and well organised Force, driven by the principles of transparency and accountability in its operations and management of its resources.

Furthermore, this new bill institutes an appropriate funding framework for the police.

This is in consonance with what is obtainable in other federal government key institutions, enhances professionalism in the Force through increased training opportunities, and creates enduring cooperation and partnership between the police and communities in maintaining peace and combating crimes nationwide.

Nigerians criticise new Police Bill

However, Nigerians have been filled with apprehension over details of the new Bill which seemingly empowers officials to act without consequences.

It is filled with many places where it tells police officers to act where it has found “reasonable grounds”, or if there’s “reasonable apprehension”.

For instance, Section 34 of the Act says that a suspect may be handcuffed if there is “reasonable apprehension of violence or an attempt to escape”.

Section 38 also says that a police officer can arrest a suspect without a court order; and without a warrant if he suspects that the person has committed an offence on “reasonable grounds” against any law in Nigeria or another country; except the law creating the offence states that the person cannot be arrested without a warrant.

What this means is that a Nigerian police officer can arrest you without warrant; if he has “reasonable grounds” to believe you’re a suspect.

Whether or not you’re actually a suspect is irrelevant; as long as he reasonably thinks and believes that you are.

Definition of reasonable?

The question of reasonability differs from one person to another. What is reasonable to one may not be reasonable to another.

With this bill, if a police officer thinks that only criminals drive a type of car; he is backed by the law to arrest an owner of that car without warrant.

Legally, the courts have a test for reasonableness, including whether a decision is fair, just and right. But giving the Nigerian police officers these wide powers is definitely not a good thing. They will surely abuse it.

However, supporters of the law argue that this same section was in the Police Act 2004; and the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA 2015)

Many supporters of this Act have however argued that this same provision is not new; and that it was in the Police Act of 2004 and the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA).

Osinbajo warns about potential break-up of country if Nigerians fail to work together

The Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo has called for a rebirth of the nation that would foster development at all levels.

Osinbajo, who was represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, made this known at the Independence Day Interdenominational Church Service at the National Christian Centre in Abuja on Sunday, September 27.

The vice president, who spoke on the theme: “Together, come let us rebuild,” urged Nigerians to contribute their quotas to national development through renewed vigour.

According to Osinbajo, the story of Nehemiah and his role in building the wall of Jerusalem should be a lesson to every Christian in Nigeria, who is desirous of building Nigeria.

”The concern of Nehemiah was borne out of the love he had for the nation that prompted him to seek permission to rebuild the walls.

”We need such love to rebuild the cracks that we have in our nation. Such Nehemiah will cry to God to use the opportunities in the country to address our challenges.

“Fortunately for us, our walls are not yet broken but have cracks that could break if not properly addressed.

”We need to seek the face of God to address the broken walls. The significance of wall signified purity, prosperity, peace, and contentment,” Osinbajo said.

He called on the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) to provide leadership to its faithful in making Nigeria a great nation.

Ayokunle, who took the scriptures from the book of Mark 12: 28-31, said for Nigeria to attain greatness, there was a need to imbibe God’s kind of love that is eternal, sacrificial, and unconditional irrespective of ethnicity, region, and religion.

According to him, love will allow us to serve one another selflessly and build our nation.

”The love we need to embrace in Nigeria is God’s kind of love. The love that is eternal, sacrificial, unconditional irrespective of ethnicity, region, and religion.

”Our love for God is hypocritical, our religion appears to be empty, it has not reflected in our holiness at work or market place.

”We need true religion to reposition Nigeria,” he said.

The CAN president called on the leaders at all levels to use their positions to build the nation rather than causing disunity, while pleading with them to be change agents that would lead by example to ensure the progress of the nation.
