President Muhammadu Buhari has called on the international community to take stronger action in eradicating terrorism acts such as those perpetrated by Boko Haram in Nigeria; even as he demanded stronger international action against illicit flows of small arms and light weapons as well as acts of piracy.
He made this call on Tuesday night in a virtual address to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
The Nigerian president who addressed the assembly via a pre-recorded video statement; expressed deep concern over the worrisome development.
Specifically, Buhari referenced the Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria. He called on the international community to come to the aid of Nigeria in curbing the menace.
He said: “In Nigeria, we are still facing violent extremism from the insurgency of Boko Haram and bandits. We continue to count on our strong cooperation with UN counter-terrorism bodies and neighbouring countries to overcome the terrorists in the Lake Chad Basin and the wider Sahel Region.
“We will vigorously sustain the rehabilitation, reconstruction and resettlement of victims of terrorism and insurgency in the North-East. The North-East Development Commission has been established for that purpose,” he stated.
Further, Buhari bared his thoughts on the rise in proliferation of small arms in Nigeria and the African continent. Nevertheless, he stated that international collaboration and solidarity will go a long way in stemming it.
“Nigeria remains deeply concerned over the illicit trade, transfer and circulation of small arms and light weapons; particularly on the continent of Africa. We urge the international community to renew efforts to stem this traffic and promote the Arms Trade Treaty.
“This is to codify accountability in the on-going battle against trans-border crimes, including terrorism and acts of piracy.’’
Also, Buhari stated Nigeria’s position on other global challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, illicit financial flows and nuclear proliferation. He urged other world leaders to fight for uninhibited supply of safe and effective coronavirus vaccines for all.
Buhari criticised the absence of global solidarity in the battle against COVID-19; noting that failure of the UN in this direction means failure in its core mission of giving expression, direction and solution to the yearnings of the international community.
On illicit financial flows, the Nigerian president called for an overhaul of existing international structures that undermine countries’ efforts to generate and retain their financial resources. He alse expressed Nigeria’s commitment to ongoing efforts by the UN to rid the world of nuclear weapons.

Ize-Iyamu made this disclosure on his Facebook page in reaction to the declaration of Governor Godwin Obaseki as the winner of Saturday’s election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
1st News had reported that Ize-Iyamu scored 223,619 votes while the governor garnered 307,955 votes to secure another four-year term in office.
However, the APC candidate said he was still studying the results of the election.
He thanked the people of the state for their support and alleged that many of his supporters were disfranchised.
Ize-Iyamu wrote: “I hereby thank and appreciate my teeming supporters, who have had to endure many evils including being prevented from exercising their franchise, for their support and determination during the election process.
“I assure you all that I am studying the results along with other party members and will announce the next line of action soon. God bless you all.”
Meanwhile, the National Consultative Front (NCFront) on Sunday, September 20, commended stakeholders for peaceful and credible Edo gubernatorial election, applauding the security for its neutrality and professionalism.
The group disclosed a statement entitled “Major Assessment and Verdict on Edo Governorship Election”.
The nonpartisan group, which commended the security for visible neutrality and professionalism in preventing thuggery and attempted malpractice in some polling units, advised the officers not to rest on their oars.
According to the group, more are still expected from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), on logistics and in the conduct of some political parties and their agents.
The group said that party agents were expected to be more adherent to subsisting electoral ethics and rules, which forbade voters’ inducement, vote-buying, thuggery and violence during elections, ballot snatching and stuffing.
It said that the political parties should always exercise respect for the Peace Accord their parties and candidates signed before elections.
President Muhammadu Buhari, on Sunday, September 20, has congratulated Edo Governor, Godwin Obaseki on his re-election for a second term at the helm of affairs in the state.
Buhari offered his congratulations in a statement signed by Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media & Publicity, Garba Shehu, urging him to continue to show grace and humility in victory.
The President also commended the election process in the state, reiterating the government’s commitment to free and fair elections.
“My commitment to free and fair elections is firm because, without free and fair elections, the foundation of our political and moral authority will be weak,” Buhari said.
“I have consistently advocated for free and fair elections in the country; because it is the bedrock of true democratic order.
“Democracy will mean nothing if the votes of the people don’t count or if their mandate is fraudulently tampered with.”
Furthermore, Buhari also praised the Edo electorates; the parties; candidates; and security agencies for conducting themselves responsibly.
4wardwego had documented the events that led to the eventual victory of Obaseki against Ize-Iyamu.
Both men faced each other in 2016, albeit with Obaseki flying the flag of the APC; and Ize-Iyamu flying that of the PDP.
The campaign, characterised by drama and controversy that did not spare the State House of Assembly; was tempered by the intervention of the Oba of Benin to calm fears that the poll could turn violence heightened.
A peace accord was also signed by all the candidates days before the poll as stakeholders made concerted efforts to ensure a successful poll.
Overall, most of the stakeholders rated the exercise as largely peaceful, free, and fair.
