Landlord sets tenant ablaze due to rent in Calabar

On Wednesday, September 16, a landlord reportedly set his tenant ablaze due to the house rent being owed in Calabar.

1st News gathered that he doused the room of one of his tenants with petrol and set it on fire, burning her to death over nonpayment of eleven thousand naira (N11, 000) rent.

The incident took place at No 9, Ansa Ewa Street, Cobham Town in the Bayside area of the city; when the landlord whose name was given as David Ntiero Okon poured fuel in the room of Mrs Mary Samuel and ignited fire that engulfed the one-room apartment and eventually killed her.

A tenant in the house, Obongette; a security man told Vanguard that the lady who has lived in the house for over seven years; owed the landlord eleven thousand naira following the downturn in her fish business.

This was caused by the incessant attacks by militants in the Calabar Water Channel.

“The woman is a fish seller and on Wednesday morning she went to buy fish at Oron in Akwa Ibom State; and when she came back that evening the landlord asked her to pay the balance of her annual rent; but she said she did not have any money; but should be allowed to sell her fish the next day so she could raise money to pay the rent”.

According to Obongette, the landlord became infuriated by the woman’s appeal; and started accusing her of refusing to pay him the rent and when the woman went to bath the man poured fuel in the room; and after bathing as she stepped into the room the man ignited fire which engulfed the place.

“As the woman shouted and tried to escape but the man locked the door; and when people came to rescue her; he brought out a machete and chased them away; threatening to kill anyone who dared to rescue the burning lady”.

He said after the woman died people in the area mobilized; and took the corpse of the woman to the landlord’s apartment and laid it there till the next day.

“Police came yesterday (Thursday) afternoon and carried the body; and also arrested the man because we ensured that he did not escape or do any other thing.

The house was built by his late father and he chased away all his siblings from the house and took over the house”.

DSP Irene Ugbo, the Cross River Police spokesman said the man is in police custody; while the corpse has been deposited in the mortuary. “Investigations are going on to unravel what really happened” she stated

Emirates Airlines banned from operating in Nigeria

Emirates Airlines, a foremost international carrier, has been banned from operating in Nigeria.

The ban was imposed by the Federal Government.

Specifically, the Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika revealed the ban will take effect from Monday, September 21, 2020. This was disclosed via a tweet posted on his official handle on the micro-blogging site, Twitter.

The tweet reads as follows: “The PTF sub-committee met today with EU Ambassadors to discuss Lufthansa, Air France/KLM ban. The meeting progressed well.  Emirates Airlines’ situation was reviewed and they are consequently included in the list of those not approved; with effect from Monday, September 21, 2020.”

4wardwego can report that the sanction on Emirates Airlines arose from the principle of reciprocity. The Federal Government had disclosed in August that it would enforce the principle in granting permission to airlines to resume operations. Consequently, the FG had stated that countries which barred flights from Nigeria would also be treated in like manner.

Indeed, following the resumption of international air travel in most countries which had been suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic; a few countries had either restricted flights from Nigeria.

Flights from these countries were also banned by Nigeria. Same principle of reciprocity was applied in the case of countries which were yet to resume international flights

The Federal Government had earlier announced that KLM, Etihad, RwandAir, Air Namibia, Royal Air Maroc, Lufthansa, AirFrance, TAAG Angola Airlines; were not granted approval to commence flight operations in Nigeria. The decision was announced before the resumption of international flights Nigeria.

Also barred were Cabo Verde and South African airlines which were denied approval for flights into Nigeria; mainly on the grounds that international flights were yet to resume in their countries.

Among the airlines that got the FG’s nod to resume flight operations are Air Cote D’ Ivoire and Kenya Airways. Others are EgyptAir, Turkish Airlines, Middle East Airline, British Airways, Delta Air, Qatar Airways, Ethiopian Airlines and Emirates Airlines. This was prior the latest ban slammed on the airline.

Also cleared are Air Peace, Virgin Atlantic, Asky Airlines and Africa World Airways

Visa ban for electoral offenders: FG fumes, accuses US, UK of disrespecting Nigeria’s sovereignty

The Federal Government has expressed its unhappiness over the decision of the United States and United Kingdom Governments to enforce a visa ban against some Nigerians which both governments accuse of allegedly interfering with the electoral process.

Specifically, the Nigerian government has described the move as disrespectful to the sovereignty of Nigeria; noting that it is wrong for an external country to apply punitive measures such as visas restriction on its citizens.

This was disclosed by the FG via a statement issued by Mr Ferdinand Nwonye; Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday in Abuja.

Equally important, the development comes as a response to the recent announcement of the U.S. and the United Kingdom; both of which had imposed a visa ban on those who undermine electoral processes in Nigeria.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to state that the Nigerian government has taken note of the concerns of some of our partners; especially the U.S. and UK governments regarding the elections in Edo and Ondo States.

‘‘They have also expressed their intentions to take punitive measures against those who decide to; in what they termed as, undermine democracy.

“It is important to highlight that the responsibility for the conduct of elections in Nigeria solely resides with the Independent National Electoral Commission and State Independent Electoral Commissions. The Federal Government, and especially the President, is committed to providing all necessary logistic, financial and security support to the electoral process.

“The President has continually urged all parties and contestants to peacefully conduct themselves before; during and after the elections, and supported patriotic non-governmental initiatives such as the Abdusalami Abubakar-led Peace Committee.

“Furthermore, it should be noted that there are ample provisions in our laws to sanction violators/perpetrators of electoral violence and fraud. It would be considered disrespectful of the sovereignty of Nigeria; for any outside authority to sit in judgment over the conduct of our citizens and apply punitive measures; such as visa restriction, unilaterally.

“While we appreciate the support and encouragement of our international partners such as the EU; we urge our equally valued partners such as the UK and U.S. to cooperate with our relevant agencies,” the government said.

Further, the FG called on the partners to support security agencies in Nigeria; by providing them whatever concrete evidence of observed misconduct to allow our laws and regulations to take their course. The Nigerian government also expressed solidarity with the government and people of the U.S. as regards their forthcoming election; which it hoped would be free from interference and violence.
