2023 Elections: Atiku’s presidential ambition hits brickwall

Nigeria’s former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar’s presidential ambition hits brick-wall as fresh facts have just emerged that the closed-door meeting with his boss, former President Olusegun Obasanjo has ended abruptly.

A highly-dependable source close to Obasanjo at the venue of the meeting with Atiku (the Abeokuta Presidential Library) said it ended abruptly, as the former President told his erstwhile VP that he had already told the world that 2023 should be time for young people to take over the democratic space. Obasanjo, according to the source, told Atiku that he could not go back on his call for older politicians to play advisory role and leave the stage for younger ones.

Indications that the 2023 journey would be tough for the Wazirin Adamawa first emerged when former President Ibrahim Babangida hosted Atiku at his Minna residence and refused to even comment on the former VP’s 2023 ambition. Babangida had earlier declared in a viral interview with Arise TV that he had identified about four “young” Nigerian politicians with better potentials of becoming Nigerian president. He then rejected the recircling of old, aged Nigerians as leaders of modern day Nigeria.

A few weeks after Atiku’s visit to former President Babangida’s residence, Chief Raymond Dokpesi, Waziri’s presidential campaign director met Afenifere leaders to seek their blessings for his principal’s 2023 ambition. A topshot of the Afenifere, Chief Ayo Adebanjo reportedly told Dokpesi openly, that he would not support Atiku’s ambition, saying ” I won’t endorse Atiku because of his( Atiku’s) use-and-dump style of politics”.

Shortly after the Adebanjo’s reported rejection, the political terrain was heated by a floodgate of protests against Atiku’s 2023 ambition, simultaneously by almost all the Atiku 2019 support groups across the nation. The Southwest States of Lagos, Oyo, Ondo and Ogun protesters asked Atiku to jettison his ambition. This was shortly followed by another street protest from Atiku support groups in the South, which went by the name of Southwest Development Frontier (SDF), with huge placards bearing slogans like “Waziri please leave 2023 for a younger person”, meant to get him to back down on his ambition.

Up North, support groups started by shutting down Atiku’s immediate constituency of Adamawa, then other States – notably Kaduna – by a group which went by the name of Coalition of Civil Society for Good Governance and other 2019 Pro-Atiku groups in Plateau and Benue States.

Also the Northern Elders Forum(NEF) set out its criteria, which spelt out the quality of leadership that would befit the successor of incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari, showing NEF’s preference for “more vibrant, leadership”, that is well-grounded in all ramifications.

On their part, the Coalition of Northern Groups(CNG) and Arewa Youth Consultative Forum(AYCF) earlier advocated for generational power shift in separate public engagements with the nation’s media. The CNG has issued a number of public statements in support of the emergence of young people as leaders in 2023 and beyond, while it took the campaign to all universities in the region and it stepped up the campaign during the Late Yusuf Maitama Sule Memorial Lectures Series, where it created a critical mass of young men as advocates and potential leaders of the near future, in terms representative democracy, entrepreneurship and engineering among others.

At a recent meeting of the Northern elders and opinion leaders at Arewa House in Kaduna sometime in January 2022, the position of the participants was that the young ones should be allowed to take centre-stage on the democratic space, to end the worrisome culture of producing leaders above 60 years of age.

Analysts have expressed shock at the dwindling political fortunes of Atiku, seeing how prominent Nigerians who massively supported him in 2019 are now back-tracking in droves, signposting an internal rebellion – though most of leaders of the mass protests alleged being used and dumped by the Waziri. Some went so far as to state that the Waziri seldom spend six months in the country as he junkets round the globe doing other things and paying less attention to his political foot soldiers.

Also the 13 PDP governors have taken a stand that is in sharp contrast to that of the former Vice President, who had to secure a court order to affirm he is qualified to even contest in 2023.

There is the growing consensus that the dominant quest for young people to take over Nigeria’s democratic space in 2023 and beyond has finally nailed Atiku’s latest presidential ambition. But pundits think the Atiku support groups’ backtracking would compel the former VP to take a new look at his politics in general and review his strategy that now seems to be slowly failing.

President Buhari Signs the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2021 into Law

President Muhammadu Buhari today signed the 2022 Electoral Bill into Law. The President said it is gratifying to note that the current Bill comes with a great deal of improvement from the previous Electoral Bill 2021.

“There are salient and praiseworthy provisions that could positively revolutionize elections in Nigeria through the introduction of new technological innovations. These innovations would guarantee the constitutional rights of citizens to vote and to do so effectively” “The Bill would also improve and engender clarity, effectiveness and transparency of the election process, as well as reduce to the barest minimum incidences of acrimony arising from dissatisfied candidates and political parties. These commendable efforts are in line with our policy to bequeath posterity and landmark legal framework that paves the way for credible and sound electoral process that we would all be proud of”

“Distinguished Senators and Honourable Members of the National Assembly, from the review it is my perspective that the substance of the Bill is both reformative and progressive. I am making this bold declaration because I foresee the great potentials of the Bill”

“Worthy of note include the democratic efficacy of the Bill with particular reference to sections 3, 9(2), 34, 41, 47, 84(9), (10) and (11) among others”

“This however, cannot be said about one provision as contained in the proposed Bill, which provision constitutes fundamental defect, as it is in conflict with extant constitutional provisions” he said.

His full address reads:

ADDRESS BY HIS EXCELLENCY, PRESIDENT MUHAMMADU BUHARI, PRESIDENT FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA AT THE SIGNING OF ELECTORAL BILL 2022 INTO LAW

STATE HOUSE, ABUJA

FRIDAY 24TH FEBRUARY, 2022

The Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill 2022, passed by the National Assembly forwarded for Presidential Assent, via a letter dated 31st January, 2022. In line with established tradition, I received inputs from relevant ministries, departments and agencies of government after careful and thorough reviews of the Bill and its implications to democratic processes in our country.

  1. It is gratifying to note that the current Bill comes with a great deal of improvement from the previous Electoral Bill 2021. There are salient and praiseworthy provisions that could positively revolutionize elections in Nigeria through the introduction of new technological innovations. These innovations would guarantee the constitutional rights of citizens to vote and to do so effectively.
  2. The Bill would also improve and engender clarity, effectiveness and transparency of the election process, as well as reduce to the barest minimum incidences of acrimony arising from dissatisfied candidates and political parties.
  3. These commendable efforts are in line with our policy to bequeath posterity and landmark legal framework that paves the way for credible and sound electoral process that we would all be proud of.
  4. Distinguished Senators and Honourable Members of the National Assembly, from the review it is my perspective that the substance of the Bill is both reformative and progressive. I am making this bold declaration because I foresee the great potentials of the Bill. Worthy of note include the democratic efficacy of the Bill with particular reference to sections 3, 9(2), 34, 41, 47, 84(9), (10) and (11) among others.
  5. This however, cannot be said about one provision as contained in the proposed Bill, which provision constitutes fundamental defect, as it is in conflict with extant constitutional provisions.
  6. Section 84 (12) constitutes a disenfranchisement of serving political office holders from voting or being voted for at Conventions or Congresses of any political party, for the purpose of the nomination of candidates for any election in cases where it holds earlier than 30 days to the National Election. The section provides as follows:-
“No political appointee at any level shall be voting delegate or be voted for at the Convention or Congress of any political party for the purpose of the nomination of candidates for any election”.
  7. This provision has introduced qualification and disqualification criteria that ultra vires the
  1. Constitution by way of importing blanket restriction and disqualification to serving political office holders of which they are constitutionally accorded protection.
  2. The practical application of section 84(12) of the Electoral Bill, 2022 will, if assented to, by operation of law, subject serving political office holders to inhibitions and restrictions referred to under section 40 and 42 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
  3. It is imperative to note that the only constitutional expectation placed on serving political office holders that qualify, by extension as public officers within the context of the constitution is resignation, withdrawal or retirement at least 30 days before the date of the election.
  4. Hence, it will be stretching things beyond the constitutional limit to import extraneous restriction into the constitution on account of practical application of section 84(12) of the bill where political parties’ conventions and congresses were to hold earlier than 30 days to the election.
  5. Arising from the foregoing, with particular regards to the benefits of the Bill, industry, time, resources and energy committed in its passage, I hereby assent to the Bill and request the Nationally Assembly to consider immediate amendments that will bring the Bill in tune with constitutionality by way of deleting section 84(12) accordingly.

Thank you may God bless our country.

Apostle Suleiman sex Scandal re-echoes: I was forced to recant – Otodo

Apostle Suleiman, the General Overseer of Omega Fire Ministeries, is in the news again.

Canada-based Nigerian woman, Stephanie Otobo, who had some years ago allegedly had an amorous relationship with Suleiman, has again leveled some allegations against the clergyman in a recent video.
In the video; Otobo explained that she made the confession in Suleiman’s church under duress, as she was already tired of the court processes; particularly with the transfer of the case from an incorruptible judge to another.

According to her, the suit in Nigeria had a strain on her finances as she had to move to and fro the country, and Canada; incurring expenses over flight tickets, accommodation among others.

She alleged that Phrank Shuaibu, a media aide to Apostle Suleiman, approached her and asked that the case could be settled if only she could make an open confession in church, stating that her initial confession was false; which she agreed to.
She said, “People are nailing me for going to the church to apologize. I want you to know that I’m in my 20s, something just happened. I was lost, going to court for more than 2 years, and I couldn’t stay in Nigeria because I was going to Canada.

I flew back from Canada to Nigeria 16 times.  People are just seeing that part and they weren’t seeing what I was going through.
“Everything happened suddenly. First of all, I’m destitute, I had no money but he had the money to pay off everyone including my friend that I was living with to call immigration on me and she did it.

I was desperate to get out of the situation. People paid me money but I didn’t take the money before I went to the church.
“It all started in 2017 when a friend told me about him that I should just place a call across and he will tell me the name of my husband.

So, I texted the name of two different men because, at that point, I just wanted to get married; settle down.

But Apostle Suleiman called me himself and asked me why I didn’t come to meet him personally while he was in Canada for a program.
“I said I was not interested in seeing him, that someone told me to just call and he will tell me the name of my husband.

That was how he started telling me he was tired of his wife but because of the Pastor thing, he cannot leave her but I was like, I don’t have the time.
”He told me God sent him to me and because I grew up in Nigeria, in a Christian home; so I believed him.

That was how the manipulation started. I’ve had bad experiences with him (Suleiman). He gave me something to drink at the hotel that almost killed me.”
She further alleged that the relationship started, but the clergyman told her to stop her career, but she would have none of it. This, she said, brought about a misunderstanding between them.
Afterward, Otobo and a young man had flown into Nigeria from Canada to meet with Timaya in relation to her music career.

She said Suleiman kept calling and threatening, which made the young man with her, query the pastor if he wanted to have her killed.
Meanwhile, Apostle Suleman had allegedly sent the police after the duo; but after two weeks of futile search, Otobo’s account got frozen which made her pay a visit to the bank where she was arrested alongside the young man and, taken to the police station where bail was denied them for three days.
She said the case was in court for two years after a media adviser to Apostle Suleiman, Phrank Shaibu influenced the transfer of the case to another court.
“They succeeded in getting the case transferred from the initial court under the female Judge, who refused to collect bribe from them. They wanted the judge to jail us but the woman refused.

Later, when I noticed that they had transferred the case to another court, I knew that was it.  Phrank approached then me and said we should settle the matter, and I gave in.

“I was tired of coming to Nigeria because of this issue. The Canadian government was also after me like why am I traveling so frequently.

When Phrank approached me, I was like okay. He took us to Abuja and lodged us at this popular hotel. It was at the hotel that Phrank told me what to say. I even have the recording of where he was talking.
”Then they took me to Auchi with an entourage to the church where I made the confession. I wanted to say the truth in the church, but I was scared so they would not kill me.
“I was wondering why the wife was supporting that kind of thing because she was right there. I even came in through the back of the altar. I wanted the spirit of God to see that they were bringing me into the house of God to lie. I was invited to lie. I went to speak to the Pastor upstairs first, that’s why I came in through the back of the altar.”

Matawalle swears in Nasiha as Zamfara’s deputy governor

Gov. Bello Matawalle of Zamfara on Wednesday, February 23, swore-in Sen. Hassan Nasiha as the state’s new deputy governor, following the impeachment of Mahdi Aliyu by the State House of Assembly.

Speaking at the ceremony in Gusau, Matawalle said that the action was to fill the vacuum created by Aliyu’s exit.

He said that a deputy governor must be vibrant, honest, and loyal to the goals of any administration.

Matawalle said that Nasiha was selected after a wide consultation among stakeholders in the state, describing him as most qualified for the office of the state deputy governor.

He, however, reminded the new deputy governor that he was appointed at a time when the state required commitment and out-of-box solutions to tackle security, economic and social challenges facing it.

The governor advised him to abide strictly by the Constitutional provisions guiding the operations of his office.

Speaking, Nasiha affirmed his loyalty to the governor and his administration.

He promised to work towards the success of the administration, especially in the areas of human capital development.

“I am very much aware of the state challenges, particularly that of insecurity, I will support the governor’s policies and programmes aimed at bringing peace and development to the state.

“I promise total loyalty to the governor to enable him to achieve good governance in the state.

“No doubt my appointment as deputy governor is a trust, I am, therefore, appealing to the public to pray for me in discharging the duty,” he said.

Nasiha, 62, was Senator representing Zamfara Central at the National Assembly before his appointment, he was also the immediate past caretaker Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.

Meanwhile, the House of Representatives has asked the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to comply with the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to end the ongoing warning strike in the interest of students and the education sector in the country.

This followed a motion titled, ‘urgent need to address the frequent strike actions by ASUU,’ moved by Dozie Nwankwo from Anambra State on Tuesday, February 22.

During the plenary, the House mandated the Committees on Labour, Employment and Productivity and Tertiary Education and Services to liaise with the relevant ministries and stakeholders to address the outstanding issues that led to the current warning strike by members of ASUU.

In sponsoring the motion, Nwankwo said the previous ASUU strike which lasted for nine months had inflicted pain on Nigerian students, parents, and the education sector.
