Plateau State Specialist Hospital Holds Strategic Planning Retreat to Chart Five-Year Growth Path

In line with the vision and mission of The Time is Now administration, spearheaded by His Excellency Barr. Caleb M. Mutfwang, the Plateau State Specialist Hospital (PSSH) has commenced a three-day strategic planning retreat aimed at crafting a comprehensive five-year growth roadmap for the institution. The retreat, organized by the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Christopher S. Yilgwan, and the hospital’s top management team, kicked off today at the serene Miango Rest Home.

The opening ceremony was graced by key stakeholders, including representatives from the Plateau State government, healthcare professionals, facilitators, and hospital staff. The event marked a significant step toward repositioning the 92-year-old hospital as a global healthcare brand and a hub for medical tourism. Participants were welcomed with a strong message of commitment to innovation, improved service delivery, and a patient-centered approach to healthcare.

Mr. Gayi Timothy Gayi, representing the Head of Civil Service, emphasized the importance of strategic planning in achieving sustainable growth. He remarked, “Without plans, nobody succeeds. Anybody who doesn’t plan well plans to fail. This retreat is a time for us to reflect on the past, identify gaps, and prepare for the future.” He commended the hospital’s leadership for taking the bold step of developing a strategic document that would not only shape the institution’s immediate future but also serve as a guiding framework for the next generation of healthcare professionals.

Prof. Christopher Sabo Yilgwan, the Chief Medical Director, provided insights into the hospital’s journey, highlighting its evolution from a colonial health facility to a specialist hospital catering to multiple states. He reiterated the administration’s unwavering commitment to universal health coverage and affordable healthcare for all Plateau citizens. “Our aim is not just to compete locally but to act locally and think globally. We envision a hospital that attracts international patients and contributes to the nation’s foreign exchange,” he said. He also stressed that the retreat would address key challenges such as medical infrastructure gaps, staff capacity building, and patient satisfaction.

Pharmacist Kim Jerry Bot, Executive Secretary of the Plateau State Drug and Medical Commodities Management Agency, underscored the importance of quality healthcare delivery, particularly in the area of drug safety. He shared alarming findings about substandard medications in circulation and assured attendees of the agency’s commitment to ensuring the availability of safe, effective, and affordable drugs. “We are working tirelessly to eliminate substandard medications and improve healthcare delivery across the state,” he assured. His address served as a call to action for healthcare professionals to prioritize drug quality and patient safety.

Mr. Nuhu Mapak, representing the facilitators, expressed confidence in the retreat’s outcome. He praised the participants for their enthusiasm, dedication, and commitment to crafting a strategic plan that would serve as a blueprint for the hospital’s future. “The mantra is, ‘The Time is Now.’ Planning starts now, and we are confident that this document will guide the hospital to greater heights,” he stated.

Participants at the retreat shared their optimism about the initiative and the impact it would have on healthcare services. Dr. Stephen Markhenry, a gastroenterologist at PSSH, described the retreat as a turning point for the hospital. “With the plans being developed, the hospital will be globally competitive in the next five years. This is a call to hard work, collaboration, and a human-centered approach to healthcare,” he said.

Nurse Lami Choji Chollom emphasized the importance of planning for organizational success and patient care improvement. “This retreat is an eye-opener. It’s about preparing for the future and ensuring that our patients receive the best care possible. We want the hospital to become a model healthcare institution, setting standards for others to follow,” she added.

The retreat is expected to produce a robust strategic document that will guide the hospital’s operations, infrastructure development, and service delivery over the next five years. The initiative aligns with the state government’s broader agenda to revolutionize healthcare and achieve universal health coverage. The document will focus on key areas such as hospital modernization, staff training, adoption of new medical technologies, expansion of specialist services, and strengthening partnerships with local and international health organizations.

As the Plateau State Specialist Hospital embarks on this transformative journey, stakeholders remain optimistic that the institution will emerge as a beacon of excellence in healthcare delivery, not only in Plateau State but also across Nigeria and beyond. The strategic planning retreat marks the beginning of a new era—one that prioritizes efficiency, innovation, and patient-centered care, ensuring that PSSH remains at the forefront of medical excellence.

The discussions focused on enhancing collaboration in critical areas such as healthcare, agriculture, renewable energy, and peacebuilding.

The Governor expressed appreciation for Germany’s continued support, particularly in empowering women and youth through modern agricultural training programs. He highlighted Plateau State’s vast agricultural potential and stressed the importance of foreign investment and knowledge transfer to increase productivity, create jobs, and improve food security across the region.

A key outcome of the meeting was Plateau State’s active participation in the upcoming Nigeria-Germany Cultural Exchange Program. Additionally, the Governor announced plans to revitalize the creative sector, including the reconstruction of the Luka Bentu Indoor Theatre, a project set to receive significant attention this year.

In the healthcare sector, the Governor emphasized the need to upgrade medical infrastructure, train healthcare professionals, and integrate renewable energy solutions into hospitals to enhance service delivery. He called on Germany to leverage its expertise in healthcare and sustainable energy to support these initiatives.

Agriculture remains a cornerstone of the administration’s development agenda. The Governor revealed ongoing discussions with the Federal Government to expand the Yakubu Gowon Airport runway, aiming to transform it into a cargo hub for exporting agricultural produce to Europe and beyond. This initiative is expected to open new economic opportunities for local farmers.

The Governor also sought Germany’s assistance in advancing ICT infrastructure in Plateau State, citing ongoing collaborations with the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy. IMPACT Project: Plateau Stakeholders Unite to Boost Primary Healthcare Services

The Immunization Plus and Malaria Progress by Accelerating Coverage and Transforming Services (IMPACT) Project in Plateau State hosted a critical stakeholders’ engagement on Monday, January 27, 2025, at Crispan Hotel, Jos. The meeting brought together executive chairmen of the 17 local government areas (LGAs), traditional leaders, religious groups, and other key health sector actors to deliberate on enhancing primary healthcare delivery in the state.

Speaking at the event, Silas Patrick Dung, Executive Chairman of Jos South Local Government, highlighted the importance of collaboration between contractors, local government chairmen, and communities. He emphasized the need for transparency in project implementation, including access to Bills of Quantities (BOQs) and contractor information, to ensure proper monitoring and accountability.

“We need to know the contractors and have access to the BOQs to monitor these projects effectively. This will help us ensure that contractors adhere to the agreed standards,” he said. He also urged the project team to involve local government chairmen in the recruitment of community health workers, ensuring they are strategically deployed to underserved areas.

Nurse Ndak Zuhumnan, the Plateau State Project Manager for the IMPACT initiative, explained that the engagement aimed to foster grassroots ownership of primary healthcare services. According to him, the state government has awarded contracts for the upgrade of two primary healthcare centers in each LGA, ensuring essential amenities like fencing, motorized boreholes, solar power, and staff quarters are in place.

“The local government authorities must take ownership by monitoring these upgraded facilities and ensuring contractors deliver as agreed. This is vital to improving healthcare delivery, particularly in reducing maternal and infant mortality rates,” Zuhumnan stated.

Dr. Raymond Juryit, Executive Secretary of the Plateau State Primary Health Care Board, pointed out the critical shortage of skilled healthcare workers at primary healthcare centers. He revealed plans to recruit additional staff, with the goal of addressing the state’s human resource deficit in healthcare. “By the end of this administration, we aim to employ up to 11,000 health workers to fill the gaps in our facilities,” he noted.

Traditional rulers also pledged their support, with HRH Rev. Dr. Isaac Wakili of Jos East stressing the importance of involving community leaders in healthcare initiatives. “As custodians of the people, we are ready to collaborate to ensure this program succeeds and improves the lives of our people,” he said.

The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Chief Ephraim Usman, lauded Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s commitment to revitalizing the health sector. He praised the synergy between the state and local governments in driving the healthcare agenda forward.

“Governor Mutfwang has demonstrated remarkable leadership in the health sector, revamping multiple primary healthcare centers and reducing infant mortality. The local government chairmen here today signify their commitment to sustaining these efforts,” Chief Usman stated.

The stakeholders resolved to intensify community sensitization efforts, ensuring grassroots involvement in healthcare delivery. They also emphasized the importance of regular engagement between local authorities, traditional leaders, and health sector operators to sustain the gains of the IMPACT project.
