Otunba Segun Showunmi Launches ‘The Alternative’ Movement in South-South Nigeria

To address Nigeria’s critical democratic challenges and promote grassroots involvement in leadership selection, Otunba Segun Showunmi, the convener of the National Opposition Movement Coalition, “The Alternative,” officially launched the movement in the South-South region. The event took place during a regional town hall meeting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Thursday, January 16, 2025.

Addressing an audience comprising political leaders, elder statesmen, women leaders, youth groups, and advocacy organizations, Showunmi emphasized the urgency of reorienting democracy in Nigeria. He called on citizens to unite in deciding the future of the nation, urging them to actively engage in political processes and hold leaders accountable.

“The best among us must step forward to lead the rest of us,” Showunmi declared, stressing the need for visionary and capable leadership. He highlighted the importance of fostering an inclusive dialogue, where diverse viewpoints are encouraged without descending into chaos or undermining the nation’s unity.

“We can’t be a nation that interprets opposition responsibility to mean encouraging chaos or demarcating the country,” he stated. Instead, he called for a constructive opposition that offers viable alternatives to governance while working to address the nation’s challenges, including economic struggles and political instability.

Showunmi expressed concerns about the diminishing role of civic responsibility among Nigerians, urging citizens to remain committed to democratic principles. He underscored the importance of identifying quality leaders not only at the presidential level but also in the legislative arm, emphasizing that a functional Senate and House of Representatives are vital for good governance.

“Our focus should be on what kind of leaders we want, who we need, and how to inspire citizens to participate actively in democracy,” he said. He also called for reforms within political parties, advocating for inclusivity and transparency in party primaries.

Veteran actress and Rivers State Labour Party Chairman, Hilda Dokubo, echoed Showunmi’s sentiments, urging citizens to focus on grassroots issues. “Rivers State is in our hands; it is what we choose. Let no one distract us,” she said. Dokubo also highlighted the region’s economic contributions and the need for equitable distribution of resources.

Hon. Bright Ngola, National Coordinator of the Niger Delta Right Advocate, emphasized the role of a strong opposition in providing checks and balances. “Without a quality opposition, the same issues will persist even after the 2027 elections,” he warned, urging for a reawakening to end the cycle of suffering.

Chief Solsuema Osaro, Rivers State chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), called for harmony among opposition parties. He emphasized the need for ideological unity to inspire confidence among Nigerians and create a robust opposition capable of challenging the status quo.

Other political party chairmen who where present at the townhall meeting including, Hon Ben Ogbobula of Zenith Labour Patty, Hon Jim Jaja of NRM and Hon Godson of NNPP, also echoed Showunmi’s call for a strong opposition. A recurring theme at the meeting was the need for greater inclusion of women in politics. Participants criticized the limited roles assigned to women in political parties and called for reforms to increase their participation in decision-making processes. “How can women excel as CEOs of banks but be sidelined in political leadership?” one speaker questioned.

The South-South town hall meeting is part of a nationwide series of regional gatherings under the banner of “The Alternative.” Previous meetings have been held in Abuja, Plateau, Bauchi, and Kano, with plans to expand to other regions. The goal, according to Showunmi, is to create a national paradigm shift in democratic conversations.

“This is not just about politics; it’s about reawakening our consciousness for the common good of Nigerian citizens,” he stated. The movement seeks to empower citizens to take ownership of the political process, emphasizing the need for unity, transparency, and a collective vision for the nation’s future.

As the conversation continues, Showunmi urged Nigerians to prioritize competence and integrity in leadership selection. He noted that while 2027 may seem distant, the groundwork for meaningful change must begin now. “The earlier we start searching for the character that will lead us, the better,” he said.

The event concluded with a commitment from participants to work together in building a strong, unified opposition capable of offering Nigerians credible alternatives in governance. With the South-South region now onboard, “The Alternative” movement continues its march toward reimagining democracy in Nigeria.

How ‘Learning With Mo’ is Reshaping Design Careers Across Africa and Beyond

In an industry where access often determines success, one designer is rewriting the rules and creating opportunities where none existed before.
When Moses Amama, a seasoned product designer and community builder, launched Learning With Mo in December 2022, it wasn’t just a passion project. It was a purposeful response to a widespread problem: talented individuals with the drive to succeed in tech but no clear path to get in. With the mentorship landscape often crowded yet shallow, Amama envisioned something deeper and more transformative.

From day one, Learning With Mo stood out for its intentionality. Out of dozens of eager applicants, only a few were selected based not just on skill or portfolio, but on potential, passion, and a willingness to grow. Those chosen embarked on a structured journey of mentorship that combined group learning with tailored one-on-one support. With a custom-built skill evaluation framework, regular coaching, and strategic career mapping, participants weren’t just learning. They were evolving.

“Before joining the program, I had been stuck for over a year, applying endlessly and questioning my path,” shares one participant. “Mo didn’t just teach me design. He helped me believe in my work again. Two months after our sessions, I landed my first design job, and now I’m mentoring others.”

This is the story of many alumni. Some broke into tech for the first time, while others finally stepped into the senior roles they had long been qualified for but hadn’t been able to access. The difference was a mentor who showed up not only with knowledge and frameworks, but with generosity.

Over the past two years, Moses Amama has personally invested in the success of his mentees. He has funded internet access for those facing financial hardship, purchased design courses worth hundreds of dollars, and organized physical workshops that bring remote design principles to life in real-world ways. One standout event was the Remote Usability Testing Workshop held in January 2024, which gave participants a chance to apply their skills in hands-on sessions.

Although the program began with a small group, its influence now spans multiple countries. Moses has hosted career guidance sessions with designers across continents, donated time and resources to leadership development programs, and provided direct coaching that helped over one hundred people land their first design jobs. These outcomes reflect more than just career shifts. They reflect personal transformation and restored confidence.
“Moses Amama has been more than a mentor. He’s a force,” says another mentee. “He made the design world feel less intimidating and more human. His belief in people makes you want to believe in yourself too.”

Today, Learning With Mo is more than a mentorship program. It is a growing community of designers who are landing jobs, thriving in their careers, and paying it forward. The initiative has sparked important conversations about what mentorship should look like in Africa’s design and tech ecosystem. It should be structured, personal, sustainable, and rooted in empathy.

As Moses Amama continues to scale the reach and depth of the program, the results speak for themselves. The careers launched. The voices elevated. The cycle of mentorship now renewed and multiplying.
This is what happens when one person chooses to lead with intention. Learning With Mo is not just a program. It is a movement.

Plateau State University Applauds Government for Donating Brand-New Bus

Plateau State University, Bokkos, has expressed its heartfelt gratitude to the government for donating a 36-seater bus to address the transportation challenges faced by its staff and students.

The university received the brand-new bus on January 10, just hours after requesting intervention from the authorities. The swift response demonstrates the government’s commitment to collaborative governance, according to Governor Caleb Mutfwang.

Chairmen of the 17 local government councils in Plateau State led by the State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Ephraim Usman presented the bus to the university management at the old government house in Jos on January 10.

The donation through the joint effort of the local government councils came just 24 hours after the university’s management approached the Commissioner of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, as well as representatives of the 17 local governments, with a request for a bus.

Acting Vice Chancellor Prof. Shedrack Best explained that the majority of staff and students live 40 miles away from the university in Jos due to accommodation challenges, resulting in transportation difficulties.

“This has implications for service delivery in the university, as staff commute every day from Jos to Bokkos,” Prof. Best said.

Governor Mutfwang commended the local government’s efforts, emphasizing the need for collaboration in governance.

“The states and local governments should prioritize efficiency over autonomy, as we need collaboration and synergy,” Mutfwang said.

The governor also highlighted the importance of supporting the university’s progress.

“PLASU needs to be facilitated in every way to gain its rightful place among universities in Nigeria,” he added.

Prof. Best appreciated the governor and the 17 local governments for responding to the concerns of staff and students.

The Acting Vice Chancellor reiterated the university’s challenges, including the fact that over 95% of its workforce commutes from Jos due to safety concerns following the December 2023 crisis.

“We have relied heavily on vehicular movement for staff to get to their duty posts, but this has been worsened by the crisis,” Prof. Best explained.

“We hope that this donation will be the first of many interventions to address our transportation needs.”

The Acting VC also called on the government to consider providing more buses that can reach the university, despite the challenging road conditions.

“We have seen the Metropolis buses, but they have limitations in terms of the quality of roads they can travel on,” Prof. Best said.

“We urge the government to find buses that can reach Bokkos, so that our staff and students can benefit from this initiative.”
