Dissemination Workshop on Rural WASH Pilot Project by PRUWASSA in Jos

Plateau State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (PRUWASSA) has organized a workshop put in place to disseminate the report of the World Bank supported Rural WASH pilot project in Plateau State. The workshop featured stake holders from various communities: district heads, Directors “WASH” from all the 17 Local Government Areas of Plateau State.

Speaking at the event, General Manager, Plateau Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (PRUWASSA), Engr. Peter Kassam noted that the project which is the first of its kind employed the use of remote sensing technology to track functionality of water facilities in both urban and rural areas of Plateau State. This system promises to eliminate challenges posed by the old approaches used in monitoring WASH interventions.

The purpose of the project was to enhance the sustainability of rural water services by leveraging innovative technology which captures real-time data from sensors installed on a sample of water points in selected communities of Plateau State. It is expected that the outcome of the study which was disseminated today, would be used in making decisions from informed perspective.

The project was contracted to Sweetsence Company as an International partner and WaterAid Nigeria was brought in as a Local NGO. But constrained by the COVID-19 pandemic which led to the imposition restrictions on international travels, Sweetsence handed over the entire process to WaterAid, with Plateau Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency as an Implementing Agency. Its worthy to note that the Pilot project in Plateau State, Nigeria is the second in Africa after Kenyan and 3rd in the World after Colarado (USA) as of 2019. Recently Ethiopia has been added to the number.

WaterAid Nigeria and PRUWASSA Staff were both trained on the technicalities of Sensor installations and Mwater inventory. The sensor installations commenced in late 2020 and ended in early 2021. A total of 400 water facilities were identified in the 17 LGAs and Sensors were installed in 200 out of the 400 facilities. The remaining 200 were used as control, to compare the rates of functionality by phone calls to establish the ground truth.

Emmanuel Iorkumbur, Planning Monitoring and Evaluation Manager WaterAid Nigeria Stated that the Government and all stake holders should key in to ensure that the water facilities in rural communities are well managed and maintained for people to have a stable and reliable source of water supply. Mr Emmanuel also stated some challenges encounter during this project, challenges like vandalism, stolen accessories/gadgets and mechanical failure. Some of these challenges lead to disruption of the functionality of the facilities.

We Lead Nigeria: recognizes the need for an established dedicated network of actors focusing on SRHR and climate change on International Women’s Day

WE LEAD NIGERIA STATEMENT FOR INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY

This year’s International Women’s Day centers on sustainability and building a greener society. Achieving a greener society cuts across various parts and most especially the lives of women and girls. To celebrate today is to recognize the interconnectedness between gender equality, sexual and reproductive health and rights and climate change. Evidently, Nigeria’s climate has been changing: increases in temperature; variable rainfall; rise in sea level and flooding; drought and desertification; land degradation; more frequent extreme weather events; affected fresh water resources and loss of biodiversity.

Climate change issues have negative impacts on maternal health and create conditions that result in increases in gender-based violence, including harmful practices such as child marriage especially in displaced  communities. In particular, adolescents; sex workers; people living with disabilities; and those of underrepresented sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, and sex characteristics (SOGIESC) face significant barriers in accessing SRHR information and services, including in climate change ecosystem.

Today, We Lead Community of Action in Nigeria recognizes the need for an establised dedicated network of actors focusing on SRHR and climate change for improved dialogue, collaboration, approaches, and processes.
March 8 every year has been set aside by the United Nations as International Women’s Day. A day set aside to reflect and commemorate the cultural, political, and socioeconomic achievements of women. It is also a focus point for the women’s right movements in Nigeria and all over the world to address some of the challenges women face such as gender inequality, lack of reproductive justice, economic inequality, political exclusion, education parity, violence against women and girls amongst others.

The IWD  2022 with the theme for this year as “Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow” tends to focus on highlighting the contributions of women and girls around the globe and their participation in their communities towards promoting climate change adaptation, mitigation, and response, as a means of building a more sustainable future for all.

About We Lead Nigeria
We Lead is a new, inspiring, innovative and far-reaching program aiming to improve the sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRH-R) of young women. It focuses on four specific groups of young women: those who live with HIV, who have a disability, who identify as lesbian, bisexual, trans, or intersex, and who are affected by displacement. The program puts young women rightsholders in the driving seat while supporting them to impactful and sustainably advocate for their SRH-R. The We Lead consortium consists of six civil society organizations (Positive Vibes, Restless Development, Marsa, FEMNET, the Central American Women’s Fund, Hivos).

The We Lead is currently being implemented in Nigeria by a Community of Action (COA) of 11 organizations. The COA will support in developing and implementing strategies to shift social and gender norms – starting with their direct environment and gradually reaching the general public. We Lead Nigeria will help rightsholders influence SRH-R service providers to improve their access to SRH-R information and services and support them in lobbying duty bearers to change laws and policies in favor of rightsholders’ SRH-R.

The HOTCOAL BASKETBALL CLUB lays emphasis on advocacy for women participation in Basket Ball on International Women’s Day

HAPPY INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY

Carl James:

“In the world of Basketball, Gender Equity and Social Inclusion is a very sensitive area.

In this regard, one of our mandates as Hotcoal basketball is to support all young people throughout the Basketball community in Nigeria, in realizing the future they want, HOTCOAL is committed to advancing social inclusion using BASKET BALL as an effect and organic tool.
It is our sole responsibility to break down barriers limiting a girl’s chances to thrive and work to drive equal access and equal outcomes in the society at large.

I’m sure a lot of us are familiar with the Basket Ball term ” free throw”, yes? Let’s go deeper, stay with me.

We have a program-project geared towards Social Inclusion, Gender Equality , and Overall Balance as a sports man or woman. This Project and Program is called “F.R.I.T.R.O”.

The F.R.I.T.R.O methodology basically relies on self assessment and development to a very functional before launching fully to impact and drive the Dynamics of the society and world as whole.

Under this project we have , mentorship programs, accelerator Programs , boot camps, friendly matches, The Business of Basketball, and most importantly,The future of Basketball and the BasketBaller. We are very intentional about growth and structure as it paves the pathway to an ecosystem that would build and support Generations.

We DO NOT see this as a gender specific role, this role is for us all. Women ,Men and Basketball.

“Youth are not a homogenous group, and every single young person deserves opportunities to learn, grow, and thrive irrespective of Gender. Hotcoal Basketball prioritizes diverse voices and social inclusion to ensure they can realize their potential, which in turn makes the world a more just and equitable place for all of us.”

On behalf of our Founder/Director, and the entire HotCoal Basketball Club, we wish all women, girls around the world, A very spirited International Women’s Day, we pray our plans today, will be sustainable tomorrow”.

Onehotcoal #Onebasketball
