The Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) convened a post-election review meeting with its staff on December 12, 2024, at its headquarters in Jos. The initiative, led by the commission’s chairman and members, aimed to assess the successes and challenges of the October 9, 2024, local government elections and chart a path for enhanced electoral processes in the future.
Barr. Pam Gyang Davou, Secretary of PLASIEC, representing the Chairman, stated that the review was part of a broader engagement strategy. Earlier sessions had been held with political parties, media organizations, and civil society groups. “It is vital to include our in-house staff in these discussions. Their perspectives, observations, and advice will better prepare the commission for subsequent elections,” he explained. Sessions were divided by staff levels, ensuring inclusive participation.
Staff members appreciated the opportunity to contribute to the review process. Dorkat Patience, a recently employed staff member, expressed her gratitude for the insights gained. “This meeting broadened my understanding of the election process. Before now, I never knew the complexities involved. The knowledge shared today assures me that future elections will be even better,” she remarked.
Mr. Titus Gara, a PLASIEC staff member from Bokkos Local Government, highlighted the credibility of the 2024 elections while emphasizing the importance of the review. “This process helps us identify areas for improvement and ensures that we can deliver even more credible elections in the future,” he said.
The review underscores PLASIEC’s commitment to transparency, continuous learning, and accountability in managing elections. Insights from these discussions will inform strategies for upcoming elections, ensuring they are more efficient, inclusive, and credible. PLASIEC’s proactive approach reinforces its role as a leader in electoral best practices in Nigeria
Otunba Segun Showunmi, the convener of the National Opposition Movement Coalition (NOMC), also known as “The Alternative,” has called for a renewed commitment to national unity and democratic engagement in Nigeria. Speaking at the North East Town Hall meeting in Bauchi on Thursday, December 12, 2024, Showunmi emphasized the need for a united Nigeria and the active participation of citizens in the democratic process.
“It is the responsibility of the authorities to provide platforms that enable citizens to serve better,” he said. “The attitude that makes Nigeria seem like it is not one country has to go. This nation is one, and there is enough evidence to prove that. From our culture to our traditions, the similarities outweigh the differences. Even language, which some consider a dividing factor, is only a means of communication. We must reject division and celebrate our unity as Nigerians.”
Showunmi’s remarks set the tone for the town hall meeting, which focused on engaging Nigerians in conversations about democracy, governance, and national development. He stressed the need for citizens to take ownership of the democratic process, citing declining voter turnout as a worrying trend.
“In 2023, despite 93 million registered voters and collected PVCs, only 8 million votes were enough to install the president. This is a stark reminder that many Nigerians are not exercising their civic responsibilities. This disengagement, coupled with vote buying and selling, erodes the promise of democracy,” he noted.
Showunmi highlighted the urgent need for a shift in how Nigerians approach governance and leadership. He called for a “different way of thinking, behaving, and holding leaders accountable,” urging citizens to focus on finding solutions rather than merely complaining.
“This is not about political parties,” he clarified. “While I am a member of the PDP, this movement is about the people and the need for collective action. We must educate and sensitise ourselves, hold meaningful conversations, and rebuild trust in the democratic system.”
Hajiya Maimuna Ahmed of the National Women PDP Northern Awareness Forum commended the initiative, highlighting its inclusivity and the importance of engaging Nigerians without focusing on political affiliations.
“This engagement isn’t about partisan politics but about capturing the voice of all Nigerians,” she said. “I also call on women to actively participate in such initiatives geared toward nation-building. Women have a crucial role to play in shaping the future of this country.”
Hon. Usman Kafa, a former member of the Gombe State House of Assembly, also addressed the gathering, stressing the importance of leadership and developmental issues.
“We must voice our concerns about developmental challenges, especially leadership,” he said. “This is not the time to exchange votes for foodstuffs. The North East must rise above such politics and advocate for good leadership that prioritizes the people’s welfare. Political awareness must grow in our region, and we must all join our thoughts and efforts to build the nation.”
The Bauchi event was part of a series of zonal town hall meetings organized by NOMC to foster dialogue and collaboration across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. Showunmi praised the Governor of Bauchi State for his support and highlighted the inclusiveness of the gathering, which drew participants from across the North East.
“The hospitality and infrastructure renewal in Bauchi are commendable,” he said. “This initiative isn’t about government but about Nigerians coming together to chart a better future. We’ve completed sessions in the North Central and North East. Next, we’ll head to Kano for the North West meeting and then move to the southern zones.”
Describing democracy as the “greatest hope for the poor,” Showunmi called on Nigerians to reclaim their political power through informed and active participation.
“If democracy is to work, every citizen must understand their role and rights. The power of one vote can transform lives and elevate communities. We cannot afford to remain passive or sell our future for temporary gains,” he said.
Showunmi, a seasoned political strategist and former spokesperson to Vice President Atiku Abubakar, reiterated his commitment to fostering a united Nigeria. He urged Nigerians to embrace dialogue, unity, and a renewed sense of responsibility, warning against the dangers of tribalism and political apathy.
The National Opposition Movement Coalition, through its Alternative initiative, aims to create a platform for Nigerians to discuss and address critical national issues, ultimately ensuring that democracy delivers on its promise of inclusion, progress, and shared prosperity.

The election featured innovative measures, such as the pilot testing of PLASIEC Voter Verification System in selected wards, showcasing PLASIEC’s drive for modernization. Cishak invited constructive feedback to enhance future electoral practices, emphasizing the importance of collective efforts in building an inclusive and transparent democracy.

Dr. Piwuna urged improvements in staff training, material distribution, and continuous voter education to ensure better outcomes in future elections.
Latep Dabang, a key stakeholder, stressed the critical role of transparency in governance, especially in local elections. He highlighted issues like political manipulation and one-party dominance while advocating collaboration between governments and international bodies to foster democracy. Daban underscored the importance of integrity and perseverance, urging leaders to prioritize fairness and responsibility to build trust in electoral systems.
Barr. Pam Gyang Davou, Secretary of PLASIEC, provided insights into technical and logistical challenges, including system shutdowns, ad hoc staff mishaps, and payment delays. He assured attendees of the commission’s efforts to upgrade devices and streamline processes to prevent future disruptions.
The session concluded with interactive discussions, allowing participants to share perspectives and propose actionable solutions. Stakeholders commended PLASIEC’s commitment to continuous improvement and collaborative efforts, signaling a shared determination to enhance electoral integrity in Plateau State.
Praising Governor Mutfwang’s efforts to engage with the business community
Chief Kefas Ropshik, the 2023 Plateau State Governorship Aspirant and CEO of Kefiano Motors, has commended the commitment of Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang to fostering relationships with the business community in Jos.
Speaking at a dinner organized by the Plateau State Government with the business community at the Government House in Jos, Chief Ropshik emphasized the urgent need for economic empowerment and industrial development in Plateau State.
He highlighted that while the primary purpose of business is to create wealth and earn a living, the issue of capital flight has significantly hampered the state’s economic growth. To address this, Chief Ropshik called on the government to enact a law requiring that at least 70% of government contracts be awarded to Plateau indigenes. He argued that this would help retain money within the state and improve the quality of life for its residents.
Chief Ropshik also stressed the importance of entrepreneurship development, noting that 70-80% of businesses in the state are currently owned by non-indigenes. He urged the government to implement programs that identify and empower local entrepreneurs, offering them training, start-up capital, and data management support.
Popularly known as Kefiano, Chief Ropshik further underscored the need for industrial development in the state. He appealed to the government to establish industries such as rice mills and maize processing factories, believing that these initiatives would transform Plateau’s economy and create employment opportunities for its people.
In addition, Chief Ropshik challenged Governor Mutfwang to establish an institutional framework for monitoring and evaluating job performance across the state. He suggested that this would ensure quality workmanship in construction projects and other government activities by providing expert assessments and evaluations.

Transportation initiatives include subsidized services and rural road construction under the RAM initiative to improve market access.
Governor Mutfwang also stressed the need for public-private collaboration, local content promotion, and restructured tax systems to increase internally generated revenue. He reaffirmed his vision for a self-reliant Plateau State, urging stakeholders to remain committed to partnerships that will overcome challenges and build a resilient economy.
He concluded with festive wishes and optimism for a prosperous Plateau State in the coming year.
The Secretary to the Government of Plateau State, Architect Sam Jatau presented the state’s economic outlook, noting its ₦2.4 trillion GDP driven by agriculture, trade, tourism, and MSMEs, which employ over 70% of the workforce. Despite growth constraints, the government has introduced reforms, including digitalization of services, infrastructure investments, and financial support for small businesses.
Business stakeholders, including Multi Choice, Kefiano Motors, and Hamtul Printing Press, identified key challenges such as unstable electricity, multiple taxation, and low government patronage.
