Plateau State adopt Local Manufacturing of Ventilators

According to the latest figures by the World Health Organisation (WHO), there are now over 900,000 laboratory-confirmed cases of the virus, worldwide and 37,826 deaths. In Nigeria, there are now over 170 cases.

In regards to the high increase in the confirmed cases of the coronavirus pandemic across the globe and neighboring states.

Plateau State Government is engaging local innovators and design engineers to construct ventilators as part of its overall strategies to curtail the spread of COVID-19 and manage possible cases in the state.
The state has no record of COVID-19 case but surrounding states of Kaduna, Bauchi, Benue and even the FCT (Abuja) already have laboratory-confirmed cases of the virus.

However, Governor Simon Lalong has put in place a number of measures including the setting up a COVID-19 Taskforce to advise and implement on strategies at taming the pandemic in that part of central Nigeria that is less than three hours drive to Abuja, Nigeria’s political capital where cases have spiked.

As the coronavirus crisis deepens globally putting governments and health authorities on the edge, hardware experts are increasingly under pressure to meet mounting demands for ventilators – an essential in managing serious cases of the virus infection.

A ventilator is a machine that provides mechanical ventilation by moving breathable air into and out of the lungs, to deliver breaths to a patient who is physically unable to breathe, or breathing insufficiently. The coronavirus weakens the lungs of victims and increasingly makes it difficult for them to breathe in a way that systematically erases the patient’s chances of survival.

A ventilator simply takes over the body’s breathing process when disease has caused the lungs to fail. This gives the patient time to fight off the infection and recover.
Since the COVID-19 became a pandemic, hospitals worldwide are overwhelmed and ventilators have become scarce and expensive.

All over the world, there is a rush for ventilators but scaling up production has been tough and bump leaving wide space for innovators to leverage on.
“Governor Lalong is motivated by the need to fill the gaps, get the state more prepared, find workable solutions, encourage indigenous entrepreneurship in great moments of needs such as we have now,” said a senior COVID-19 Taskforce member in Jos.

“The governor and his team believe that the pandemic is a challenge to put our local innovators, designers and engineers to test. This is not the time to fold arms or doubt the ingenuity of abundant local skills,” the official added.
The government already has a convincer in how a team turned around the broken down ventilators at Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH).

This week, a small team of young men were able to fix three ventilators that had long been abandoned and discarded by JUTH. They helped to increase the number of ventilators in JUTH to six and made the hospital more prepared to handle cases.
“In a resource-limited setting like ours, this is no mean feat. It is a testament to the possibilities that the Governor Lalong is increasingly demonstrating by his believe in local skills and in technology,” said Director General of Plateau State ICT Development Agency (PICTDA).

Gentlemen of the Press, I welcome you to another briefing
session in keeping with our promise to keep you abreast of our efforts to fight
the Corona Virus pandemic.

1. Let me begin by reaffirming that so far, there is no
recorded case of the disease in Plateau State. Even though some suspected
samples have been taken for examination, non has turned out positive.

2. We have continued our enforcement of regulations earlier
issued. So far, there is substantial compliance and we are working to ensure
total adherence by all citizens. We commend those citizens who have abided by
the directives of Government.

3. However, we are concerned that transport operators are yet
to fully comply and are carrying passengers as they previously did. We are
calling them again for further engagement where they will be issued a last
warning.

4. Some religious organisations who flouted the order for
gathering more than 50 people last week have been invited by security agencies
and have equally apologised and made undertaking not to violate Government
orders again.

5. There is also enhanced sensitization particularly at the
grassroots level as we have engaged stakeholders cutting across all sectors.

6. Local Governments have also keyed into the work of the
State Task Force and they are replicating what we are doing at the State level
in terms of sensitization and enforcement.

7. As you are aware, we have been carrying out preliminary
examinations at our border entry points to ensure that all passengers undergo
temperature assessments. So far, it has gone well.

8. However, based on assessment of the situation, the
Chairman of the Plateau State COVID-19 Taskforce, His Excellency Governor Simon

#COVID19Plateau: Are you a Programmer/Developer?Participate in the Plateau State ‘Developer’s challenge programme for solutions on Covid-19

The Plateau State government has announced a ‘Developers Challenge’ programme to support software developers to find solutions to a variety of problems related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This week, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has recorded over 785,897 laboratory-confirmed cases of the virus, worldwide and 37,826 deaths. In Nigeria, there are over 131 cases as at the time of this report and the country expects the figure to spike as is the rest of the continent with more than 6, 000 cases already recorded.

“The ‘Plateau COVID-19 Developers Challenge’ is on three focus areas that capture the global challenge of: Saving lives; Saving communities; and Saving businesses“

While the medical community is rushing to search for solutions to the spread of the disease with a big push for vaccine and medicine research, big ICT companies and the tech communities are also upping their game to save humanity from the dreaded virus.

“Tech has a history of helping the medical industry track and treat viruses. Among more recent examples is flu tracking. In 2018 the US experienced a particularly severe flu season. During this time aggregated user data collected through Kinsa’s smart connected thermometers indicated illness spikes across the country.,” noted one report.

Plateau State has no record of COVID-19 case but surrounding states of Kaduna, Bauchi, Benue and even the FCT (Abuja) have laboratory-confirmed cases of the virus.

The Plateau State government believes that policy, technology, the medical industry and communities must be fully mobilised to halt the spread of the disease, said Director General of Plateau State Information and Communication Development Agency (PICTDA), Mr. Daser David in Jos, the state capital.

He added: “Governor Simon Lalong is a firm believer in the power of technology and is totally committed to getting all stakeholders including the medical and technology communities to find solutions that will not only raise awareness on COVID-19, but offer new approaches and quick actions to addressing crisis situations, like the current one related to the coronavirus.”

How to participate

The ‘Plateau COVID-19 Developers Challenge’ is open for participation to all developers in the provision of solutions for saving lives, communities, and businesses.  The COVID Challenge is seeking to get Nigeria’s tech community offer solutions round defeating COVID-19 on three focus areas that capture the global challenge of: Saving lives; Saving communities; and Saving businesses.

To participate in the challenge, follow the link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScaniWMRywbwwQeqJXu_M2H-uD_TZReDFICJu2mIO6GxUJNBg/viewform?usp=pp_url

Like the rest of world, Plateau State, and indeed, all of Nigeria, is not silent on finding a solution, David stressed.

As one report noted, “n terms of COVID-19, we are seeing another rise in digital epidemiology tools, chatbot helpers, EHR guidance tools and rapid-response test kits.

“Apple launched a COVID-19 website and corresponding app. The new site [an Apple health check], which serves as both a screening tool and information platform, was born out of collaboration with the CDC, the White House Coronavirus Task Force and FEMA. Users are able to go onto the site and answer a list of questions including symptoms, risk factors and exposure. At the end of the survey users are given a directive about possible next steps.”

With COVID-19 pandemic not abetting, the digital health community has released “a slew of new tools aiming to monitor the spread of the disease and facilitate better treatment.” Tech giants Facebook, Amazon and Google are already talking with the WHO to help combat the spread of disease, as well as address misinformation.

“We strongly believe that through the ‘Plateau COVID-19 Developers Challenge,’ we can stir our young people’s resourcefulness and sense of innovation to provide solutions that raise awareness on the pandemic, help to manage misinformation, and provide real-time answers to medical personnel in kicking out the coronavirus including reducing their exposures to the disease,” said Daser.
