The Best Up and Coming Rap Artist from the West Coast

The East and West coasts have long been fertile breeding grounds for musical and another artistic
talent. Rap is no exception. East Coast rappers come out of several regions. But the main one is in and
around New York City. According to RapTV, the Bronx in New York is, in fact, often listed as the
birthplace of modern rap music. Since rap has become a mainstay in American society, the West Coast
has grown more and more to match and sometimes surpass the East coast in terms of producing great
rappers. This seems to be especially true now as a new generation of rappers is emerging from the West
Coast and creating music that is sweeping the nation. Here are some of the best up and coming rap
artists you may not know from the West Coast.

1TakeJay
1TakeJay can barely still qualify as being “underground” as his music booms across LA speakers. The
rapper’s bouncy flow, funny lyrics, and unique beats make him one of the most popular and promising
up-and-coming rappers from the West Coast. Look out for this guy; you will surely be seeing or hearing
more from him soon.

AllBlack
Based out of Oakland, AllBlack is another slick West Coast Rapper. He came out with his first major
album Outcalls recently, and it has been getting a lot of traction, raising the rapper’s notoriety beyond
just his hometown. AllBlack has been endorsed by some of the biggest names in hip-hop, many of whom
seem to think he will be the next big thing.

Melii
Female rapper Melii brings some funky energy to the LA scene with her songs like “Ballin” and “Icey.”
This young rapper has a lot of promise and has grown significantly in popularity after Rhianna featured
one of her tunes on Instagram. It’s a good sign when millions of people want to know who you are after
hearing your music for only a few moments. Melli’s songs have the catchiness to become chart-topping
sensations. Who knows, we may be looking at the next Nikki Manaj.

AzSwaye
AzSwaye and 1TakeJay went on a highly successful LA-based tour in 2019 where AzSwaye showed off
some of his skills busting out songs like “Pop Shit,” and “Ride with My Glock,” both of which did very
well with LA crowds, which may be a sign of good things to come for things young rapper.

Blueface
Blueface came onto the scene in 2018, and at first, he was received as something as a novelty. Why?
Because his style of delivery was so odd-sounding that it almost appears accidental—as in, resulting
from inexperience. But Blueface kept coming, and in 2019 he had a few of his first bonafide hits. Now, in
2020 Blueface has the potential to become truly mainstream as he has amassed something of a
following of loyal listeners who love the unique sounding new rapper.

Rexx Life Raj
Rexx Life Raj promotes the party lifestyle and having fun in the music video for his song “Long Way,” but
there is nothing superficial about this “Berkley Superhero.” Rexx has some deep, intertwined lyrics that

he weaves through creative beats in an appealing way. It will be interesting to see this artist continue to
develop and grow in popularity over the coming year.
There you have it, some of the best up and coming rappers growing out of the warm West Coast sun.
Who knows what’s in the water in the West Coast, but whatever it seems to create some of the
country’s best rappers, as the area shows no signs of slowing down.

“Stay away from Edo APC primaries” Obaseki to Oshiomhole

Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki on Wednesday, June 3, warned the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole, to stay away from the party’s governorship primary in Edo State.

APC will hold its governorship primary in Edo on June 22.

Obaseki made this assertion during a media briefing after submitting his expression of interest and nomination forms at the APC National Secretariat in Abuja.

He further disclosed that he and his colleagues had visited the party’s National Leader, Ahmed Tinubu; as part of efforts to strengthen the party and reassure him that they were committed to building the party.

The governor added that it was “wrong for any human to try to play God.”

He expressed confidence that he would secure the APC governorship ticket; regardless of the model chosen for the exercise in Edo.

Obaseki also dismissed claims that he purchased the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship nomination forms, saying he was “a party man to the core.”

He said: “It is against natural justice for a man to be a judge in his own case.”

“For me and my colleague – Governors, we can’t see the party we are building destroyed. We should all drop our egos and work for our party.”

The duo has been engulfed in a protracted feud over control of party machinery in Edo State.

A Federal High Court, Abuja, had on Monday stopped the Edo State government from arresting and prosecuting the former governor for alleged fraud in the construction of the state specialist hospital during his tenure.

On their part, Oshiomhole and the party National Working Committee (NWC) had insisted on a direct governorship primary in the state.

Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has appealed to the Federal Government to further reduce petrol pump price to N70 per litre.

1st News had reported that the FG embarked on phased price reduction; in the last few months -from N145 to N125 then N121 on Tuesday.

However, a statement issued by the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, on Tuesday, June 2; accused the government of shortchanging the populace with the high price of fuel.

In a bid to rectify this anomaly, the PDP charged the government to immediately reduce the pump price to N70 per litre; in order to reflect the appropriate pricing template following the fall in the price of crude oil in the international market.

“The PDP completely rejects the N121 per litre price announced by the Federal Government; which has even remained unenforced”, it stated.

It further stated that the new price further demonstrated the insensitivity of the FG towards the plight of Nigerians; “particularly as they battle the social and economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic”.

Reps Committee vows to implement pay-as-you-go package on DSTV

The House of Representatives ad hoc Committee investigating non-implementation of pay-as-you-go package by DSTV and other satellite providers in the country has assured Nigerians of justice.

Chairman of the ad hoc committee, Unyime Idem, gave the assurance while addressing journalists on Tuesday, June 2, in Abuja after the inauguration of the committee by the Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila.

Idem, also Deputy Chairman, House Committee on Communication, representing Ukanafun/Orukanam Constituency of Akwa-Ibom, said the matter before the committee affected the vast majority of Nigerians.

“As chairman of this ad hoc committee, I want to assure Nigerians that their interest will be protected.

“When I moved the motion on the floor of the house; I stated that the business of this nature, the customers should be given the right to choose what they want.

“We have interacted with Nigerians and what they want is DSTV pay-as-you-go so that when they are out in their respective locations, their subscriptions can be there and they will make use of it when they return.

“We are here to defend our constituents who happen to be the consumers; based on the inauguration today, I can tell Nigerians that justice will be done at the end of the day,” he said.

Edem said the committee was ready to step on toes, saying that constituents elected reps based on courage and boldness and that would be brought to play.

The lawmaker said all stakeholders including DSTV, the regulators, and service providers would be invited to deliberate on ways to open up the sector.

He said that all bottlenecks would be critically looked into with the view to liberalising it for more interested Nigerians to benefit.

COVID-19: Lagos Government insist on continue closure of churches, mosques and others

The Lagos State Government on Tuesday, June 2, said that churches and mosques in the state might not be reopened soon for worshippers due to the COVID-19 pandemic

This closure due to COVID-19 was contained in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Home Affairs, Prince Anofiu Elegushi.

Elegushi said this on the sideline of the 2020 Ministerial Press Briefing commemorating the first year in office of Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

The Federal Government had on Monday, June 1, lifted the ban on mosques and churches in the country; based on guidelines and protocols agreed with state governments.

Elegushi said that the reopening of the worship centres was not possible soon; as the state was the epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic.

”Even before the pronouncement by the Federal Government; we have been having meetings with the religious leaders, we even had one with Safety Commission, looking at the possibility of reopening of religious houses.

”We also had one with the leaders of the two faiths and I want to tell you categorically that at that meeting; the possibility of reopening religious houses was ruled out totally due to COVID-19.

”They claimed that they cannot take such responsibility of ensuring that only 20 or 50 people are praying behind them.

“As an Imam said, he doesn’t know what is going on at the back immediately he is leading a prayer.

He said if more than 20 or 50 people are staying at his back he is not going to take responsibility for their presence.

“So, in the meeting, we ruled out in totality the issue of reopening the religious houses; until we have a clear coast for us to do so.

”The Federal Government mentioned it, but it never ruled out the state in achieving that pronouncement, so all states will have to look at the possibility of doing so in their respective states.

“We all know Lagos is still having more figures. So definitely that will speak to our decision,” he said.

The commissioner, however, said that the governor of the state would come out with further directives on the matter.

KAICIID Fellows Nigeria Speak On The Consequences Of Hate Speech

In Nigeria, our well-distinguished religious groups and wide ethnic identities have created distinctiveness easily tagged with physical attributes. The exploitation of this reality by political and other interest groups has continued to create and cultivate division among us, which sadly manifests through hate speech.

Director, Research Training, Islamic Education Trust, Nuruddeen Lemu, defined hate speech as any kind of communication in speech, writing, behaviour that attacks, uses pejorative or discriminatory language,
especially with reference to a person or a group on the basis of who they are, based on their religion, ethnicity, nationality, race, colour, descent, gender or other identity.

Lemu noted that hate speech when left unaddressed, could lead to violence or hate crimes against marginalised groups, stressing that hate speech was capable of destroying a country.
Hate speech is defined by the United Nations as “any kind of communication in speech, writing, or behavior that attacks or uses pejorative or discriminatory language concerning a person or a group based on who they are, in other words, based on their religion, ethnicity, nationality, race, color, descent, gender, or other identity factors.”

Stella Francis, Media focal Point Nigeria Fellows Alumni, was particular about Issues around the Fulani Herdsmen & Farmers, Boko Horam, IPOB, Militants, and the recent trends in Alamjiris which have continued to fuel hate speech online and off-line both in the past in the present. She said that while our independent freedom of speech is respected, as a society, we must encourage ourselves to reflect on the exercise of our freedom of speech and how it endangers this beautiful place we call home. Hate speech does more harm than the underlining issues fueling it because it sows seeds of violence.

Hate speech has destructive impacts on our society. It promotes violence, leads to conflicts that destroy lives and properties, and promotes hate crimes against marginalized groups. Hate speech creates division in society and while hate statements may not immediately incite violence, they can promote intolerance and anger.

We must employ sustainable rhetoric when we discuss issues that bother our society. Forms of rhetoric like hate speech will further reap us apart, destroy our livelihood, security, and development.
The peace of our communities is the responsibility of everyone there for it is our collective duty to fight against hate speech.

Avoid making or spreading posts with hate statements on your social media platforms.
Disregard social media post which spread rumors and promote hate speech.Promote messages of tolerance and peace on social media platforms. And tell others about the consequences of hate speech.
