COVID-19: Gov Bello slams politicization of COVID-19, says pandemic ‘not new disease’

Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, on Thursday, July 2, alleged that politicians were playing games with the lives of Nigerians through the COVID-19 pandemic.

This was contained in a statement issued by Bello; when the Board of Trustees of Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation visited him at the Government House in Lokoja.

He added that it was wrong for anyone to attribute the death of the Chief Judge of Kogi State, Justice Nasir Ajana, to COVID-19.

Bello further disclosed that the late chief judge had been sick since 2016; adding that the complications that eventually led to his death were caused by the inability to see medical experts attend to him due to the lockdown.

The Kogi State government and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) had disagreed several times over the state’s COVID-19 status.

While the NCDC had confirmed four COVID-19 cases in Kogi; there were claims the state government deliberately frustrated the agency’s efforts in a bid to drive home its zero COVID-19 status claim.

Bello said: “Let us stop this game, Nigerians are suffering. Instead of the lockdown with its attendant negative effects on the people; why can’t we turn it to employment opportunities and provide clothes for face masks to be imported to those countries who have the disease.

“COVID-19 is not a new disease in our climate. We have our own way of treating it, that is what we should be exploiting; rather than subjecting our people to hardship, hunger, and starvation through the lockdown.”

Meanwhile, the Federal Government has approved Wednesday, July 8 for the resumption of domestic flights.

This was disclosed by the Minister of Aviation, Sen. Hadi Sirika on Wednesday in Abuja. He revealed that domestic flights that had been suspended since March 20 would resume fully on the day.

Sirika announced this in a statement signed by Mr James Odaudu, the Director of Public Affairs, in the ministry.

Further, he revealed that the domestic flights would commence at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja; as well as the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos.

However, the Port Harcourt, Owerri, Maiduguri and Kano airports will reopen to flights on July 11; while other airports across the country will join on July 15.

No masks required at Donald Trump’s July 4th fireworks show

President Donald Trump’s July 4th celebration will feature one of the largest fireworks displays ever and as many as 300,000 face masks will be given away to those who want them — but despite health concerns from Washington D.C.’s mayor, no one apparently will be required to wear them.

Trump made no mention of the masks or of the pandemic overall in a tweet on his Independence Day pIans.

He thanked corporate donors for supporting “what will, without question, be a special evening.”Interior Secretary David Bernhardt outlined a second year of military-focused events in the nation’s capital on July Fourthincluding Defence Department flyovers for a “one-of-a-kind air show.”“President Trump’s 2020 Salute to America will be a patriotic tribute to our men and women in uniform,” Bernhardt said in a statement.A mile-long firing of 10,000 fireworks will be “the largest in recent memory,” he said.July 4th comes as Americans are dealing with surging cases of COVID-19 and confusion over best practices in public, especially on masks.Trump has been criticised for pushing to go ahead with large campaign rallies and other public gatherings, like the upcoming holiday event, despite the increased risks of infection.

Among those deeply concerned is Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser.

Who doesn’t have the right to shut down the holiday spectacle because it’s on federal land.

He warned the federal government about the obvious dangers of such a large crowd.

Bowser said she had briefly read through the Interior Department’s statement on the July Fourth plans and believed they were not consistent with established health guidelines.“We know this is a special event for the Department of Interior. We’ve communicated to them that we do not think this is in keeping with the best CDC and Department of Health guidance. But this event will take place entirely on federal property,” Bowser said.

Washington is currently in phase 2 of its reopening plans, and Bowser asked district residents to avoid large crowds and celebrate July Fourth at or near their homes.

“We are giving D.C. residents the same message about any of their outings for the holiday weekend. Ask yourself, do you need to be there,” she said.“Ask yourself, can you anticipate or know who all is going to be around you?If you go downtown, do you know if you’ll be able to social distance?”Interior officials planned to have 300,000 face coverings on hand to give away at the National Mall.Bernhardt said visitors would be encouraged to wear masks and keep a six-foot distance from one another. There was no indication that would be mandatory, despite the recommendations of health officials.White House spokeswoman Kayleigh McEnany said Wednesday that the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention’s recommendations on masks.— which say the face coverings “are most likely to reduce the spread of COVID-19when they are widely used by people in public settings” — are not mandatory in themselves.

White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany. (AP)“The president has said that we should follow our local authorities with masks, so that’s the decision,” McEnany said.“He encourages people to follow those authorities.CDC guidelines, I’d also note, say recommended but not required and we are very much looking forward to the July 4th celebration.”

Trump and first lady Melania Trump plan to host events from the White House south lawn and from the Ellipse on Saturday.

The day after Trump attends a separate fireworks display and public gathering at Mount Rushmore.

This year’s event is expected to roll out without military vehicles.

After Trump had expressed admiration for France’s military-themed parades, last year’s Independence Day.An address by Trump near the Lincoln Memorial and military flyover, included stationary displays of Bradley fighting vehicles.A U.S. Government Accountability Office report last week estimated the partial price tag of last year’s Salute to America at US$13 million (A$19 million)Twice as much as previous years’, in part because of the cost of including the Bradleys.Like last year, donations are helping support part of the cost of the July Fourth events, Bernhardt said.

Plateau State Commissioner Tests Positive For Coronavirus

GOVERNOR LALONG DIRECTS EXCO MEMBERS TO TEST FOR COVID-19 AS COMMISSIONER TESTS POSITIVE

Plateau State Governor Simon Bako Lalong has directed members of the State Executive Council to undergo test for COVID-19 and thereafter isolate beginning today, 1st July, 2020.

This follows the fact that a member of the State Executive Council and Commissioner for Commerce and Industry Abe Aku tested positive for the virus after he carried out the test.

Based on the Governor’s directive specimens of the Commisioners are to be taken and forwarded to the COVID-19 Laboratory at The National Veterinary Research Institute (NVRI), Vom for testing.

During the period and pending the outcome of the results members of the public are advised to be guided by unnecessary visits to members of the State Executive Council while they isolate.

This action is to not only prevent possible spread of the disease, but also show leadership by example.
It could be recalled that Governor Lalong and his family carried out the test earlier where all of them tested negative.

The Governor has also continued to speak against stigmatization saying that COVID-19 is not a death sentence and only continuous testing will reveal the rate of infection and facilitate treatment to save lives.

The Governor hopes that by this act, members of the public will be more encouraged to make themselves available for testing, while at the same time obeying the COVID-19 protocols of wearing face masks, social distancing, hand washing and the use of alcohol based sanitizers.

Government also uses this opportunity to remind the public that the enforcement of orders issued by the Governor will continue and those found violating will be arrested and prosecuted.

Honourable Commissioner,
Information and Communication,
