SARS: Lagos youths defy late-night police harassment, demand scrap of police unit as protest intensifies in State House

Calls for the disbandment of the police Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) intensified into the early hours of Friday, October 9; as youths across different parts of Lagos converged at the State House in Alausa to express their grievances at the crimes of the police unit.

1st News garnered that the protest commenced on Wednesday night; with several celebrities holding protests across various points in the metropolis.

The SARS are infamous for its high-handedness; extortion; and gross violation of human rights with the youth demographic bearing the brunt of these crimes.

At Alausa, a group of young people led by Mr Debo Adebayo, a comedian popularly known as Mr Macaroni, stormed the premises of the Lagos Assembly; asking that the lawmakers pass legislation that will see to the disbandment of the SARS unit in the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).

The youths decried the constant harassment encountered in the hands of SARS operatives; lamenting the rate at which many young creatives are being battered and also killed by the ‘ruthless’ police officers in the squad.

Mr Macaroni and the other youths spent hours at the gate leading into the Lagos Assembly complex; seeking to see Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu who they were told was as expected not in the office at the time.

Officials and other members of the parliament tried to persuade the angry youths to leave and return at dawn; but they held their grounds; and likewise insisted that they would not leave till the number one citizen in Lagos addresses them; and assures them that they would work to ensure an end if brought to the ‘menace’ that SARS has become in the country.

“If we say we want to see the one that we elected into office; it is not too much,” Mr Macaroni insisted while addressing an official of the Lagos legislature.

Intimidation by Police after long siege

After a long seige, the police disrupted the protests by shutting off streetlights; whilst shooting gunshots in the air in a bid to disperse the youth.

1st Reports further garnered that some of their cars were towed with their sleeping tents destroyed by these police officials.

The chronology of these events was detailed by Savvy Rinu, an anti-SARS activist on Twitter.

Undeterred, these youths toiled on before the Speaker of the Lagos House of Assembly, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, finally arrived at the scene to address the protesting youths.

Mr Obasa told the crowd that members of the parliament will hold an emergency meeting in the morning of Thursday to deliberate upon the #ENDSARS concerns.

He promised it will not be a deliberation by only the legislators; as the governor as well as all other stakeholders concerned will be at the meeting.

The speaker apologized for the ordeal that the youths have been through; while staging their protest at the gates of the parliament; and assured them that a lasting solution will be found for the issues that have been tabled.

History of SARS

The Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the police force was put together to tackle robbery; and crimes related to armed robbery within the country; but the unit has for quite a while been overreaching in its operations across the nation.

Due to the lack of clear authority, the unit has transmogrified into a fearsome monolith; harassing many young Nigerians; especially men who spot dreadlocks and other forms of fancy head styles.

More often than not, encounters between men of the SARS unit; and the civilian populace have ended in infringements of rights; and a show of lawless on the part of those who swore to uphold the law and protect the citizens.

It is in an attempt to bring an end to SARS brutality that many Nigerians kicked-off a campaign via social media; demanding that the squad be dissolved.

What seemed like a mere Twitter storm soon spilled over into the streets; with countless youths in various parts of the country protesting and calling for an end to cruelty by SARS officials.

Senate commences probe, prosecution of SARS officers over alleged killings

The Senate, on Wednesday, October 7, mandated the arrest and prosecution of operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad who were involved in the recent killings of innocent Nigerians across the country.

This was pronounced by the President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan while ruling on the Senate resolution on a motion by Senator Oluremi Tinubu.

In her motion, Tinubu had called the attention of her colleagues to the recent extra-judicial killings and human rights abuses by SARS operatives.

Lawan said a mere dismissal of overzealous and reckless operatives was not enough but that they must be made to face the full wrath of the law.

The Senate President said, “Those who are involved in the recent killings of innocent Nigerians should be arrested and prosecuted.

“Scrapping the SARS now may not be the best option because the nation may lose the best hands in the agency while trying to do away with the bad eggs among them.

“The dismissal of the bad ones among them is not also enough. Offenders must be arrested and prosecuted to serve as a deterrent to others.”

The Senate also mandated its committee on Police, Judiciary, and Human Rights to probe human rights abuses of Nigerians by SARS operatives in the last few years.

Furthermore, the Senate asked the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, to establish a special unit that will constantly investigate and monitor the conduct of SARS operatives.

It also directed the authorities of the Nigerian Police Force to utilise part of its trust fund to trains its operatives.

Meanwhile, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) says it recorded 646 convictions and recovered more than N11 billion in monetary assets this year, despite the restriction imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Acting Chairman of the EFCC, Mr Umar Abba, disclosed this in Abuja on Tuesday, October 6, 2020.

Specifically, he spoke while addressing the Senate Committee on Anti-Corruption and Financial Crimes. This was contained in a statement issued by the spokesperson of the commission, Mr Wilson Uwujaren.

Uwujaren said in the statement that the Senate Committee had expressed the desire of the Upper Legislative House to see a reformed and rebranded EFCC.

This, according to the committee, will help in its fight against corruption, economic and financial crimes in the country.

Sen. Suleiman Kwari, the Chairman of the Committee; advised that 90 percent of investigation should be done before “arrest is effected”.

He added that “media hype must stop. If you want to be effective, forget the media. Do the work and let your work speak for you.”

Trump beating COVID-19, returns to White House

United States President Donald Trump is making sufficient recovery from the COVID-19 infection and returned to the White House from hospital.

The recovery comes three days after he was diagnosed with the dreaded virus.

Trump walked out of the Walter Reed Military Medical Centre in Bethesda, Maryland at 6:38 pm (11:38pm Nigerian time); where he was treated. He was spotted wearing a black mask and surrounded by Secret Service operatives.

However, the US President disappointed the hordes of journalists that had gathered to see him. He blatantly refused to answer questions from newsmen, many of who could be heard shouting questions at him. Trump was conveyed in a motorcade to a helipad from where the presidential helicopter, Marine One; flew him on a short trip back to the White House.

At the White House, he removed his mask and paused for a brief photo op; during which he waved to the cameras before entering his official residence.

Trump had informed the world via Twitter, shortly before leaving hospital, that he was feeling much better. Also, he revealed that would be back on the campaign trail soon. Four hours earlier, Trump had made a Twitter post in which he, again, downplayed the impact of the virus. In addition, he said he was feeling better than he did 20 years ago.

“I will be leaving the great Walter Reed Medical Center today at 6:30 P.M. Feeling really good! Don’t be afraid of COVID. Don’t let it dominate your life. We have developed, under the Trump Administration, some really great drugs and knowledge.

“I feel better than I did 20 years ago!,” Trump had tweeted.

Meanwhile, the president’s physician, Sean Conley had expressed support for his move to the White House. However, he revealed that Trump was not fully clear of the COVID-19 infection. He added that the President was on uncharted territory in terms of his treatment.
