GOPRI/Plateau Intelligentsia to Convene Youth Dialogue in Jos

As Youths continue agitations for good governance and other critical national issues, the Global Peace and Life Rescue Initiative (GOPRI) in conjunction with the Plateau Intelligentsia Development Initiative have made a timely decision to bring the youths together to discuss and make sound recommendations to policy makers.

The Chairman Plateau Intelligentsia, Dr. Daniel Meshak said the dialogue became necessary considering the nationwide agitations.
Dr. Meshak emphasized the need for youths to be carried along in the governance process and in critical decision making.

He said in line with the theme of the event, “towards a peaceful and prosperous Plateau” the idea is to bring the youths together for peaceful coexistence, unity of purpose and to enhance development.
He hinted that a communique is expected at the end of the event which will be forwarded to policy makers accordingly.

The Executive Director of GOPRI, Amb. Melvin Ejeh commended Nigerians for conducting themselves peacefully all through the protest.
He said the agitations are genuine and there is need to address them for a better, peaceful and prosperous Nation.
Amb. Melvin said the event is to create a platform to engage the youths constructively to achieve a more united, peaceful, safe and secured Plateau State as well as help them build capacity for leadership roles in the future.

He condemned the invasion, vandalization and looting of Public and private property by agents of retrogression.
He urged Nigerian Youths to ignore those who don’t mean well for the Country and remain patriotic and agents of peace.
He said there is need to engage the youths and see better ways to articulate the numerous challenges confronting them.

Amb. Melvin said youths possess great potentials that must be harnessed for national development. He said their immense contributions to nation building cannot be overstressed, hence the need to accord them greater attention and mentor them accordingly.

The event is to hold on Wednesday 11th November, 2020 by 9am-2pm at Eliel Centre Jos, Plateau State. There shall be live streaming of the event on Zoom and Facebook.

Immigration vows to restrict movement if need arises, denies rationale regarding #EndSARS protesters

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) says it has the powers to restrict movement as a border management agency if there is a need for that.

Mr Sunday James, the officer in charge of the Press and Public Relations Unit of the service, stated this in a statement issued on Thursday, November 5, in Abuja.

According to James, rumours are making the rounds about the restriction of movements in some parts of the country especially at the border posts, adding that this has nothing to do with the EndSARS protest.

“As an enforcement agency in charge of border management, if there is an order restricting anybody from entry into the country, we enforce it without any prejudice.

“This doesn’t have anything to do with #EndSARS protest or an individual, it is a routine assignment,” the Immigration officer said.

The Immigration further appealed to Nigerians to maintain law and order at all times.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola, said the ministry’s focus in the 2021 budget is the completion of some priority road projects, especially those on routes A1-A9.

Mr Fashola spoke during the 2021 budget defence of his ministry before the House of Representatives Committee on Works, on Thursday, November 5, in Abuja.

Mrs Boade Akinola, Director, Press and Public Relations of the ministry, quoted the minister; as telling the committee that the disparity between the liabilities in unpaid certificates; as well as the budgetary provisions over the years; compel the ministry to prioritise its 2021 Capital Proposals in order to make an appreciable impact.

“Given the wide disparity between the liabilities in unpaid certificates in the total sum of N392,019,827 093.87k and the budgetary provisions over the years; it has become imperative that the ministry prioritised its 2021 Capital Proposals.

“In order to make an appreciable impact within the period 2021-2023; that can be physically experienced by road users,” he said.

PDP criticizes proposed regulation of social media by FG

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has rejected alleged moves to regulate social media in Nigeria.

The party in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, in Abuja on Wednesday, November 5, described it as unconstitutional; anti-people; as well as an attempt to silence Nigeria.

Ologbondiyan said that the attempt to censor the social media was targeted at muzzling outspoken Nigerians.

This according to him is particularly against youths; media; and civil society organizations demanding accountability; and competence from the government.

He said it would also silence citizens from exposing cases of corruption; injustice; human rights abuses; and constitutional violations by government officials.

“Our party rejects the claims that the regulation bill is targeted at checking fake news.

“This is because our nation already has enough implementable laws; to counter the dissemination of fake news and punish offenders.’’

The PDP said that instead of curtailing citizens’ constitutionally guaranteed rights, the government should rather take steps to reassure Nigerians of efforts to address corruption; treasury looting; abuse of human rights; nepotism; and unaccountability.

He advised the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government to become more accountable; particularly in exposing corrupt officials including those alleged to be involved in the diversion of funds voted for COVID-19 palliatives.

Ologbondiyan said while the PDP did not in any way condone the dissemination of fake news; it rejected the attempt to hide under fake news to use regulation of social media for selfish political reasons.

The Northern Governors Forum had on Monday expressed support for the ongoing efforts to regulate social media; in order to check the spread of fake news in the country.

The Forum expressed its support in a communique issued by its Chairman and Governor of Plateau, Mr Simon Lalong, after its meeting in Kaduna with traditional rulers and other key stakeholders in the region.
