CAN implores FG, IGP to wade into Kwara Hijab controversy

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called on the Federal Government and Inspector General of Police (IGP) to intervene in the ongoing violence over Hijab policy in Kwara.

The appeal is contained in a statement issued on Thursday, March 18, by the General Secretary, CAN, Mr Joseph Daramola, in Abuja.

”We learnt that the State Government has ordered the reopening of the closed schools without resolving the crisis.

”Consequently, churches and mission schools are being vandalised with impunity by the hoodlums banking on the state government’s support in the pretext of enforcing the policy.

”Some innocent Christians are being violently abused and attacked under the watch of the Governor who is playing ostrich,” he said.

”Because it was his pronouncement on the issue of hijab wearing in violation of the court directive on the matter to maintain status quo until the matter is finally resolved by the court that led to this trouble,” it said.

CAN noted that wisdom was required by those in leadership to handle sensitive issues such as that of religion so as not to precipitate war.

”If any damage is done to any church or anyone is injured on this matter, the Governor of Kwara State will be held responsible.

“It is disheartening and unfortunate that a government that was installed democratically will become insensitive to the plight and the yearning of the people.

”As if the governor was voted into the office primarily to protect his own religion. This is unfair, ungodly and reprehensible.

”There are public schools and schools that belong to some Islamic organisations where those who wanted to be wearing hijab can be attending without causing the ongoing needless crisis rocking the state,” the statement read in part.

CAN however urged AbdulRazaq to give peace a chance in the state by ordering his hoodlums to stop attacking mission schools and churches before the situation degenerated into an unprecedented religious crisis.

COVID-19: WHO statement on AstraZeneca vaccine safety signals

Some countries in the European Union have temporarily suspended use of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine; as a precautionary measure based on reports of rare blood coagulation disorders in persons who had received the vaccine.

Other countries in the EU – having considered the same information; – have decided to continue using the vaccine in their immunization programmes.

Vaccination against COVID-19 will not reduce illness or deaths from other causes.

Thromboembolic events are known to occur frequently.

Venous thromboembolism is the third most common cardiovascular disease globally.

In extensive vaccination campaigns, it is routine for countries to signal potential adverse events following immunization.

This does not necessarily mean that the events are linked to vaccination itself, but it is good practice to investigate them.

It also shows that the surveillance system works and that effective controls are in place.

WHO is in regular contact with the European Medicines Agency and regulators around the world for the latest information on COVID-19 vaccine safety.

The WHO COVID-19 Subcommittee of the Global Advisory Committee on Vaccine Safety is carefully assessing the latest available safety data for the AstraZeneca vaccine.

Once that review is completed, WHO will immediately communicate the findings to the public.

At this time, WHO considers that the benefits of the AstraZeneca vaccine outweigh its risks and recommends that vaccinations continue.

Horrible Module – Starry Luvrain

“Horrible Module” is a spoken word piece by your favorite poet Starry Luvrain. The piece encourages men to treat their women with love and honesty. Being humans, we err, and at some point, thoughts about the love of God withdrawn from us must have come across our mind causing a huge lapse in our walk with God.

Do not be afraid, God still loves you, and this piece would strengthen this conviction.

Customers to Pay N6.98 When Using USSD Service For Financial Transaction – CBN

The Central Bank of Nigeria has set new charges payable by customers using USSD services for their financial transactions.

The apex bank said the transaction fees are effective Tuesday, setting a flat rate of N6.98 per transaction.

This was contained in a statement released on Tuesday and signed by the apex bank’s Acting Director, Corporate Communications, Osita Nwanisobi; and Director, Public Affairs, Nigerian Communications Commission, Ikechukwu Adinde.

The announcement was released in a statement titled, ‘Joint Statement By Central Bank Of Nigeria and Nigerian Communications Commission On Pricing Of Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) Services’.

‌The document reads;

“Effective March 16, 2021, USSD services for financial transactions conducted at DMBs (Deposit Money Banks) and all CBN-licensed institutions will be charged at a flat fee of N6.98 per transaction. This replaces the current per session billing structure, ensuring a much cheaper average cost for customers to enhance financial inclusion. This approach is transparent and will ensure the amount remains the same, regardless of the number of sessions per transaction.

The new rates come after the meeting held by the banking sector and telecommunications under ALTON on Monday to discuss and resolve the N42 billion debt owed mobile operators by banks.

The federal government had last week asked telecommunication operators to suspend their threatened withdrawal of USSD services over a N42bn debt owed by banks, a move that stood to affect estimated 40 million consumers, who rely on the short codes as opposed to internet services.

The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, had convened a meeting with financial institutions and mobile network operators on Monday.
