RCCG Pastor stabbed to death while separating fighting couple

A senior pastor has been stabbed to death while attempting to separate a fight between a couple.

4wardwego blog reports that the incident occurred in Owerri, Imo State.

The deceased pastor was identified as Thompson Onyekwuru. Further, the development was confirmed by the Imo State Police Command. The police confirmed the incident in a statement on Monday by the command’s spokesperson, SP Mike Abattam.

Abattam said that the incident occurred at Umukoto Nekede in Owerri; adding that Onyekwuru was a pastor with the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) in the state.

The police said that Onyekwuru, 62, was trying to prevent Obumneke Onyemechileuzo from stabbing his wife, Ogechi Onyemechileuzo, during a fight between the couple, before he was allegedly killed.

Abattam said that the husband, Obumneke, later died of gunshot wound he sustained.

“Following a distress call on 19/7/2021 at about 1400 hours at the Divisional Police Headquarters Nekede, Owerri; that one Obumneke Onyemechileuzo armed with a kitchen knife was beating his wife, Ogechi Favour Onyemechileuzo.

“When a pastor with the Redeemed Christian Church Owerri; Pastor Thompson Onyekwuru, intervened by stopping him from stabbing his wife; the suspect rushed at him, stabbed him on his back and he fell down unconscious.

“On arrival at the scene, the police team saw the suspect seriously beating his wife; threatening to stab her and ran to prevent him from stabbing his wife. On sighting the police, he attempted stabbing one of the officers on the neck and he was shot on the leg in self-defence.

“He fell down and was immediately disarmed.

“But the victims and the suspect were rushed to Rosana hospital…The doctor on call referred the victims to Human Race Hospital, where the pastor and the suspect were confirmed dead.

“The woman was admitted in the intensive care unit of the hospital and she is responding to treatment; while the corpses were later deposited at Agbala Mortuary, Agbala,” Abattam said.

Meanwhile, the command’s spokesperson said that the exhibit knife was taken to the station; while the Commissioner of Police had ordered a discreet investigation into the case to unravel the cause of the incident.

“The CP also advised the community to maintain peace, be law-abiding and go about their legitimate businesses pending the outcome of the investigation,” he said.

Lawan assures Nigerians over consideration of constitutional report on Sept 14

The President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, has assured that the Upper Legislative Chamber of the National Assembly will consider the report of the Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution when it resumes sitting on 14 September.

He further stated that the document will be transmitted to state Houses of Assembly for further legislative action.

Lawan made this assertion during his Eid-el-Kabir message on Monday, July 19.

He noted that the new Constitution will “substantially address all the areas of genuine concerns to patriotic Nigerians,” disclosed that the National Assembly will sustain the new January – December budget circle.

The statement added that “we are also committed to nurturing the tradition that we started of timely consideration of the budget by ensuring that the 2022 Appropriation Bill is passed by December so that the budget will continue to be implemented within the January to December cycle.

“This however requires the cooperation of the Executive in presenting the estimates to the National Assembly on time.

“Already, we have received the proposals on the Medium Term Expenditure Framework and Fiscal Strategy Plan (MTEF/FSP 2022-2024) which provides the basis for the 2022 Budget estimates. We will definitely accord it expeditious consideration on our return from the recess.”

This is as he asserted that the “Ninth Senate and entire National Assembly will continue to facilitate the legislative environment needed for the success of all the efforts at the Public and Private Sectors targeted at the security, peace, and prosperity of Nigeria.”

On Electoral Act Bill, Lawan maintained that the passage of the Bill will further strengthen and enhance the integrity of the country’s electoral processes.

According to him, the PIB and the Electoral Act Bill are two critical pieces of legislation that will positively impact Nigeria’s economy and democracy.

“Even before we passed the Electoral Act 2020 Amendment Bill, we had passed the Electoral Offences Commission Bill to check these offences,” he noted.

While calling on Nigerians to urge remain faithful and steadfast in working and praying for the peace, unity, and progress of the country, the Senate President said that the country was in a passing phase in history.

INEC announces new date for commencement of physical voters’ registration

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has adjusted the date of the commencement of physical registration for the ongoing nationwide Continuous Voter Registration from July 19 to July 26.

Festus Okoye, the spokesman of INEC, announced the decision in a statement on Friday, July 16, in Abuja.

He said the one-week shift in the date followed the government’s declaration of July 20 and July 21 as public holidays.

Mr Okoye said that the commission met on Thursday and deliberated on a number of issues, including the commencement of the physical registration of voters and the scheduled appointments by online registrants.

He recalled that on Tuesday, July 13, the INEC met with Resident Electoral Commissioners and noted that the commencement of the physical registration of voters scheduled for Monday, July 19 might be affected by the public holidays.

“Also, facing the prospects of interruption of their registration schedules are some of the online registrants who have scheduled their appointments for the completion of their registrations on dates likely to clash with the same public holidays.

“The commission promised thereafter to meet on Thursday, July 15, to review the situation and provide clarity on the matter. This is what it has done.

“With the declaration of Tuesday, July 20 and Wednesday, July 21, as public holidays by the federal government, the date scheduled for the commencement of physical registration has to be adjusted.

“Consequently, the physical registration of voters will now commence on Monday, July 26,” the INEC spokesman noted.

Mr Okoye said that online registrants that have scheduled appointments from July 19 to July 23 would have their appointments rescheduled.

He emphasised that the Continuous Voter Registration would run for a period of one year, assuring all Nigerians that no citizen eligible to register as a voter would be left behind.

Senate passes 2021 Electoral Amendment Bill, charges NCC to determine electronic voting process

The Senate on Thursday, July 15, passed the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2021.

The passing of the bill followed clause-by-clause consideration and adoption of recommendations of the report of the Joint Committee on INEC at Senate plenary on Thursday.

It amended clause 52(3) of the bill to empower the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) to determine the suitability of the network for electronic voting procedures with the approval of the National Assembly.

Clause 52(,3) of the bill had prescribed that INEC may adopt electronic voting and electronic processes where practicable.

The clause, which had provided for INEC to determine electronic voting process where practicable was, however, amended to empower NCC to determine the suitability of network to conduct electronic election processes with approval of the National Assembly.

While presenting the report, Chairman of the committee Sen. Kabiru Gaya (APC- Kano) said the bill was designed to holistically address all issues affecting the conduct of free, fair and credible elections in the country.

He said National Assembly had made several attempts at amending the Electoral Act No. 6, 2010; but the bill was not assented to by President Muhammadu Buhari.

He, however, said the National Assembly was poised to give Nigerians a new electoral act; thus forming a legislative agenda for the ninth Senate.

“Owing to the challenges experienced in the eight National Assembly as it relates to the Amendment of the Electoral Act, the ninth National Assembly decided to adopt the all-encompassing approach in the 2021 Amendment process.”

He said the bill with 158 clauses seeks to regulate the conduct of Federal, State, and Area Council elections; to make provisions for restriction of qualification; for elective offices to the relevant provisions of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999.

“The bill also provides for use of card readers and other technological devices in elections; political party primaries as it relates to a timeline for the submission of a list of candidates.

“It also provides for criteria for substitution of the candidate; the limit of campaign expenses among others.”

He also said that the bill also addresses the omission of names or candidates; or logo of political parties in an election and its resultant consequences.

“There are also provisions on guidelines on replacement of lost or destroyed permanent voters card; dates for conducting primary elections shall not be earlier than 180 days before the date of the election,” Gaya said.

Lawan after the passage of the bill said: “We have gone through probably the most rigorous process we ever had.

“We had at a point had to go through a division; but that is democracy.

“No hard feelings and I’m sure that Nigerians will appreciate the debt of concern by all of us here.”

Shock, anger as Senate votes against electronic transmission of election results

A mixture of shock and anger has trailed the decision of Nigeria’s Senate which kicked out the electronic transmission of results during plenary on Thursday.

4wardwego blog reports that the development has ignited a storm of reactions from Nigerians.

Leading the groundswell of reactions was the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP); which described the move as a deliberate attempt to undermine Nigeria’s electoral processes. The PDP made this known in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr Kola Ologbondiyan, in Abuja on Thursday.

Ologbondiyan said the PDP and indeed majority of Nigerians were shocked over the decision of the Senate; rejecting the demand by Nigerians across board for the electronic transmission of election results without conditionalities.

He lampooned the action of Senators from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC); describing it as an “atrocious assault on the sensibilities of Nigerians, who looked up to the Senate for improvement in our electoral process in a manner that would engender free, fair and credible process”.

‘‘It is outrageous that the APC-led Senate, in the bid to annex the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC); sought to route a statutorily independent commission to the approval of the Nigeria Communication Commission (NCC) before conducting elections.”

Ologbondiyan said the action of the Senators was a direct affront and a defilement of the 1999 Constitution (as amended); which clearly conferred operational independence to INEC to conduct elections, free from interferences and regulations from any other agency of government.

“The decision of the APC Senators therefore amounts to a suspension of the 1999 constitution (as amended); which is a recipe for crisis that could derail our democracy and destabilize our nation.”

Ologbondiyan also described it as preparation for rigging of elections, which must be firmly resisted.

“Our party, standing with Nigerians, however, commends the PDP Senators; as well as other democratically-minded Senators in the chamber for their resilience in voting for unconditional electronic transmission of results.

“This is in line with the wishes and aspiration of Nigerians for free, fair, clean and credible election.”

Further, Ologbondiyan said that the PDP noted the efforts being made in the House of Representatives; even as he urged lawmakers to return to the chamber on Friday and save the nation from an act of machination being pushed in the Senate.
