IGP reverses ban on factory-fitted tinted windshields

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Usman Baba, has announced the exemption of vehicles with factory-fitted tinted glasses from the ban on issuance of permits.

The IGP, who made the clarification on Tuesday, July 13, during a virtual chat with the media, noted that the decision was taken to stop the abuses associated with the use of tinted glasses and SPY number plates.

He also spoke on his vision for the Nigeria Police Force, stating that he will work hard towards entrenching a culture that rewards good deeds and punishes bad ones.

Baba emphasised collaboration with sister security agencies and the traditional institutions, including monarchs and community-based groups.

The police chief acknowledged that his operatives were cashing in on the ban to harass innocent car owners with factory-fitted tinted glass, adding that measures are ongoing to address the perceived excesses.

The IGP said: “Yes, we understand that there are usually issues with policies and their implementation. The directive on tinted glass is not about the factory-fitted ones, but those that are artificially made to cover the whole screens.

“If you look at the factory-fitted tinted glasses, you can still see through them and if there is any need for the driver to open the doors, the security officers would know. But those that are not factory-fitted are completely covered so that no one knows who or what they carry. Those are the ones the ban is targeted at.”

The IGP had, in June, announced the immediate suspension of tinted glass permits and issuance of SPY number plates in the country.

Meanwhile, the House of Reps has implored the Nigeria Police Force, NPF, to ensure a thorough investigation over the ongoing case of the Chief Executive Officer of Super TV, Usifo Ataga allegedly murdered by Chidinma Ojukwu.

This followed the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance moved by Rep Tolu Sadipe at the plenary on Tuesday, July 13.

Sadipe, while moving the motion, raised concerns over the unending parade and media trial of the suspect by the police.

The lawmaker said the police should rather conclude its investigation in Chidinma’s matter; and charge her to court for trial rather than the ongoing media trial the suspect is being made to go through.

1st News reports that Chidinma was first paraded by the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, on June 24 at the Police Command in connection with the murder of Ataga.

The suspect has not been charged to court yet.

Lightning has killed at least 38 people across two Indian states over the past 24 hours, officials said on Monday.

Many of the deaths occurred in the western state of Rajasthan; where 11 people died after being struck by lightning near a watchtower at the 12th century Amber Fort, police said.

Srivastava said at least nine more people were killed and nearly 20 others were injured in separate lightning strikes when the state was lashed with thunderstorms and monsoon rains.

In Uttar Pradesh, 18 people were killed by lightning on Sunday, said Manoj Dixit, a government official. Most of those killed were farm laborers working in fields.

Nigeria papers launch campaign against media bills via ‘information blackout’

In protest against the recent media bills passed in the National Assembly; several newspapers in Nigeria on Monday, July 12, published an advertorial against media regulations bills being considered at the National Assembly.

The advertorial, which appeared on the front pages of dailies such as Punch, Vanguard, The Nation, ThisDay, Guardian, Daily Sun, was sponsored by the Nigeria Union of Journalists; the Nigerian Guild of Editors; and the Newspaper Proprietors’ Association of Nigeria.

With a bold headline titled ‘Information Blackout’, the advertorial said the NPC and NBC (Media) Act amendment bills being considered by federal lawmakers was geared against the right of citizens information.

It reads, “It’s not just against the media.

“It is about society’s right to know, your right to be heard.”

The bills, which are already at the public hearing stage, are being sponsored by Olusegun Odebunmi, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Information, National Orientation, Ethics, and Values.

Debate on the bill comes as the Federal Government moves to tighten regulation on social media; after suspending Twitter over national security concerns.

Meanwhile, Mr Odebunmi has said his bill to amend the Nigerian Press Council act is not designed to gag the media.

“Most of the people commenting on the bill have no knowledge of it,” he said recently, as reported by Vanguard newspaper.

“The bill was not sponsored by Federal Government, even the Minister of Information was only aware a few days to presentation; and he did not have any input on the bill.

“It is my idea because I feel we should not wait for a supreme court judgment to do what is right by amending the existing controversial law.”
