NIREC, SGF, Governors Forum Engages Stakeholders on Peace & Security in Plateau State

The Co-Chairmen of the Nigerian Inter-religous Council, Rev. Dr. Samson Ayokunle (CAN President), Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Saad Abubakar, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, Chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum, Kayode Fayemi, as well as Governors of Sokoto, and Niger States on Monday 6th September stormed Jos the Plateau State capital to commiserate with the people and Government of the State over the recent attacks.

During the visit, they engaged various stakeholders including religious, political and community leaders on how to find lasting solutions to the security challenges of the State.

In a remark, Co-Chairman of NIREC Rev. Dr. Samson Oyakunle said they were in Plateau State in response to the recent attacks that claimed lives and properties which ruptured the peace of the State that has substantially grown over the last six years.

He said NIREC has followed with regret, the toxic narratives emanating from some religious and political leaders who instead of calming down tensions, have resorted to heightening the tension. He said NIREC has resolved to hand over such persons to security agencies for prosecution.

Sultan of Sokoto also described the visit as part of their engagement towards promoting peace in Nigeria in fulfillment of their mandate and resolutions at the last quarterly meeting which was held in Abuja.

He said the meeting initially billed for Jos was shifted to Abuja following the recent unfortunate incidents. However, he said Plateau State still remains a home of peace with attraction to people of diverse backgrounds who generally want to live together. The problem he said was the inability to halt impunity and punish criminals who use religion, ethnicity and politics to cause havoc.

Chairman, Nigerian Governors Forum Dr. Kayode Fayemi said the Governors of the 36 States are in solidarity with their colleague, Governor Simon Bako Lalong who has put in a lot of efforts and resources to build structures for peaceful coexistence in the State as well as supported peace and reconciliation in various parts of the country.

He said they will do everything possible to support him in ensuring that peace is sustained on the Plateau which is reputed for its hospitality and attraction to people from all backgrounds.

Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal of Sokoto State and Abubakar Sani Bello of Niger State also expressed sadness over the recent attacks in Plateau State, urging all stakeholders to come together and address the situation and bring back the glorious days of the State. They recalled with fond memories their experiences in Jos many years ago which they hoped the current generation will also experience.

Secretary to the Government of the Federation Boss Mustapha who represented President Muhammadu Buhari at the engagement said the Federal Government remains concerned about the attacks in Plateau and has continued to support security agencies and the State Government in putting an end to the situation.

He said though the Government will not tolerate criminality and the destruction of lives and properties under any guise, it is incumbent on citizens to cultivate tolerance and love for one another, as well as fish out criminals by reporting them to security agencies.

He expressed optimism that the efforts of the Federal and State Governments will yield positive results with the support of the citizens. He also assured that the Federal Government will do its best to support the State to respond to humanitarian needs of the internally displaced persons.

Governor Lalong while thanking NIREC and the Governors for the visit said the concern expressed and words of admonition shows that there is determination to ensure that Plateau regains it enviable place as the Home of Peace and Tourism.

Lalong challenged the people of Plateau State to rise together and unite against those who want to cause divisions and hatred using all avenues including politics.

NCC orders telecoms to shut down services in Zamfara over insecurity

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) on Saturday, September 4, directed all telecommunications providers to shut down services in Zamfara State from September 3, 2021.

According to the NCC in a statement issued by its Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of NCC, Prof. Umar Danbatta, this became imperative to address rising insecurity in the State.

A letter addressed to the Chief Executive Officers of the telecoms companies noted that the decision is “to enable relevant security agencies to carry out required activities towards addressing the security challenges in the state.”

The NCC letter titled “Re: Shutdown of All Telecom Sites in Zamfara State” said, “The pervading security situation in Zamfara State has necessitated an immediate shut down of all telecom services in the state from today, September 3, 2021.”

In line with this requirement, NCC directed the operators “to shut down all sites in Zamfara State and any site(s) in neighbouring states that could provide telecommunications service in Zamfara State. The site shutdown is for two (2) weeks (September 03-17, 2021) in the first instance.”

While the directive was specific about Zamfara State, the reference to any other facilities in any site(s) in neighbouring states that could provide telecommunications service in Zamfara State, means that other states sharing boundaries with the state would be affected by the shutdown.

This decision is coming six months after the Federal Government declared Zamfara State a ‘no-fly zone’ and banned all mining activities in the state.

The state has been a hotbed of criminal attacks ranging from kidnapping and banditry.

Last week, the government shut down schools after the abduction of 73 students from a public school in the state.

The abduction occurred 11 days after students abducted from the College of Agriculture in Bakura, Zamfara, regained freedom.

The state governor Bello Matawalle also suspended the transportation of livestock beyond the state’s borders and ordered the closure of weekly markets across the state, while transportation of food items will be subject to verification.

Twitter loses N2bn since Nigeria ban

According to statista, Twitter, the microblogging platform lost 2bn since the ban on twitter from June 4, by the nigeria federal Government.

According to Statista twitter loses 32,460,000 in a day, which accumulated to 2bn since the ban on June 4.

The NCC had sent a memo to Mobile Network Operators and Internet Service Providers to block access to Twitter for the ban imposed by the Federal Government to take effect.

“Depending on the technology deployed, there might be loopholes. A problem could be as regards implementation. It can create a loophole, a human error.

The Federal Government indefinitely banned Twitter on June 4; days after the microblogging site deleted a tweet by the President, President Muhammadu Buhari which twitter claimed violated its rules.

The Federal Government had since told a Federal High Court in Lagos; that it had not stopped Nigerians from using Twitter.

The President set up a committee consisting of five ministers to negotiate with Twitter; with the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, as the head of the committee.

Recently Mohammed announced that the committee negotiating with Twitter would soon arrive at an agreement.

He had said, “Everything will be ironed out with Twitter; within a few days or weeks.”

One of the conditions set by the government for lifting the ban is that Twitter should register with the Companies and Allied Matters Act; and establish a physical presence in Nigeria.

According to Statista, Nigeria has about 33 million active social media users; with about 26 percent on Twitter.

More trouble for FG as JOHESU serves 15-day ultimatum ahead strike

The Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) and Assembly of Healthcare Professional Association have issued the Federal Government a 15-day ultimatum, saying they will commence an indefinite strike over outstanding welfare issues with the union.

The development comes in the middle of an ongoing strike by the National Association of Resident Doctors of Nigeria (NARD).

Mr Biobelemonye Josiah, JOHESU’s National President, served the strike notice to the FG. Specifically, this was contained in a letter addressed to the Minister of Labour and Employment, Sen. Chris Ngige; as well as other relevant stakeholders on Saturday in Abuja.

Josiah said that the ultimatum was necessitated by the nonchalant attitude of government to the plight of its members.

According to Josiah, the welfare issues include adjustment of Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHES); as was done with Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) since 2014; payment of all withheld April and May 2018 Salaries of members and withheld Salaries in Federal Medical Center,  Owerri, JUTH and LUTH; review of the defective implementation of COVID-19 Special Inducement and Hazard Allowance; implementation of National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN) Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), Consent judgment and other court judgments; increase in retirement age from 60 to 65 years for health workers and 70 years for Consultant Health Professionals.

‘‘Others are payment of reviewed hazard allowance in terms of payment that guarantee fairness and justice to all concerned; payment of actual 30 per cent consolidated basic shift duty allowance to Nurses/Midwives and others.

‘‘Payment of teaching allowance to members on CONHESS 7 and 8 (Nurses, Midwives and others) and proper placement of Nurse Graduates and Interns,” he said.

The JOHESU president also said others include payment of outstanding salaries of intern health professionals at all the Tertiary Health Institutions; proper implementation of the consultant pharmacist cadre for pharmacists in the public sector, among others.

”You will recall that up till the time of writing this letter; the Federal Government has not deemed it fit to honour the Terms of Settlement entered into with JOHESU since September 2017.

‘‘This is especially the upward review of CONHESS Salary Structure as agreed; to be completed within five weeks from the date of agreement amongst other requests.”

Additionally, he accused the FG of not addressing these issues during the duration of the last seven days warning strike; noting that it had only met with JOHESU on July 12.

Josiah said that it would also be recalled that on July 2020; the Minster of Health agreed that a mistake was made in the payment of COVID-19 Special Inducement and Hazard Allowances. He noted that the shortfall was in the payment of 50% Basic of Consolidated allowances to all those Health Workers. He added that up till the time of this letter, the shortfall has not been paid. Further, he stated that to make matters worse, when the payment for June 2020 was made; government again wrongfully paid 10% of Consolidated Basic Allowances to members affected by the shortfall of April and May 2020.

‘‘This is in contravention of the spirit and content of the MoU signed on April 21, 2020. JOHESU, in compliance with the provision of Section 41 of the Trade Disputes Act Cap.T8 LFN 2004; is constrained to give the Federal Government of Nigeria 15 days ultimatum with effect from September 3.

‘‘This also is to inform you that with effect from midnight of September 17; all our members in the Federal Health Institutions shall embark on an indefinite strike action…”

‘‘You are all placed on red alert for the strike; if the Federal Government foot drags in attending to our demands,” he said.

Adeboye: Why God stopped talking to me

Pastor Enoch Adeboye of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, has revealed how God once stopped talking to him during one of his teachings.

Adeboye made this narration on Thursday, September 2, during a sermon at the Redemption Camp.

The cleric noted that he made a mistake of pride; adding that he suffered for it shortly after he got born again.

According to Adeboye: “Almost immediately after I got born again, God started speaking to me. I don’t do anything without his guidance or approval. He tells me the road to ply in Lagos so that I can bypass hold up. Most of you here know how terrible Lagos traffic is. Fortunately for me, I don’t experience it because God knows a better route.

ALSO READ:

“However, something happened that made him stop communicating with me. I used to be an interpreter to the General Overseer or General Superintendent, like we call it those days. My father in the Lord then just took a special interest in my interpretation. When other pastors in the church then realized that the General Overseer liked my interpretation; they stopped calling me to interpret for them and left me alone for the General Overseer.

I became full of myself and started bouncing around as interpreter to the General Overseer. But an iInncident happened one day. We had a program and we invited a guest minister to preach. He made a mistake that day. You may be surprised at my definition of a mistake. The mistake was that he asked me to interpret for himself.

”I was really angry in my spirit but I couldn’t object because it was too late.

“I stood up and interpreted for him. But in my heart, I was murmuring. I said ‘How could you call me a whole interpreter to the General Overseer to interpret for you’. Only if he knew what was in my mind, he would have called another person to interpret that very day.

“At the end of the program, I was on my way home and God spoke. He said, ‘Son, you are now too big to interpret to a man of God other than the General Overseer”.

After the conversation, God stopped speaking to me. I didn’t hear His voice again.

“I suffered, that whole period was like hell, I became a victim of the traffic in Lagos.”
