Gay Catholics come out, demand the church accept them

More than 120 LGBT priests, teachers and Church volunteers in Germany have launched an initiative – OutInChurch – and demanded that Catholic higher-ups toss away their long-standing disdain for homosexual relationships and grant them greater freedoms within the Church.

The group said they want “to be able to live and work openly as LGBTIQ+ persons in the church without fear,”including to serve in all Church occupations; even while in same-sex marriages or partnerships.

They also urged the Church to revise “outdated statements” on gender and sexuality, oppose “all forms of discrimination,” and allow LGBTQ persons to receive holy sacraments. The Church should rectify a wrong by admitting its “institutional history of guilt” toward gay people; the group said in its list of demands published online.

The Roman Catholic Church under Pope Francis has softened its stance on the issue of sexuality.

Francis has made headlines by reaching out to priests and nuns; who ministered to the LGBTQ community; declaring in 2020 that “homosexual people have a right to be in a family.”

However, the Pontiff clarified that; same-sex partnerships should be a civil matter, and that the sacrament of marriage should remain between a man and a woman.

In 2018, he called on gay priests to leave the church, saying; “It’s better for them to leave the ministry or the consecrated life rather than to live a double life.”

Moreover, despite rebellious priests in Germany and the US bucking the Vatican’s orders and blessing same-sex unions; the Church’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith; – the highest source of edicts on Catholic doctrine – declared last year that it is impossible for God to “bless sin,” referring to unions of persons of the same sex.

Francis sided with the congregation’s ruling, stating that it was “not intended to be a form of unjust discrimination, but rather a reminder of the truth of the liturgical rite” of heterosexual marriage.

FG Postpones fuel subsidy removal till further notice

The Minister of Finance, Budget and Economic Planning, Hajia Zainab Ahmed, said in Abuja on Monday that the Federal Government had postponed the planned removal of subsidy on

petroleum products till further notice.

Ahmed stated this at a meeting held at the National Assembly.

The meeting was convened at the instance of the President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan.

It had in attendance the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva and the Group Managing Director of the. NNPC Limited, Mele Kyari, among others.

The Finance Minister said the Federal Government initially had the plans to remove subsidy on petroleum products from July this year.

She said that was the reason adequate provision was made in the 2022 national budget for subsidy payment till June.

She said, “Provision was made in the 2022 budget for subsidy payment from January till June. That suggested that from July, there would be no subsidy.

” The provision was made sequel to the passage of the Petroleum Industry Act which indicated that all petroleum products would be deregulated.

“Sequel to the passage of the PIA, we went back to amend the fiscal framework to incorporate the subsidy removal.

“However, after the budget was passed, we had consultations with a number of stakeholders and it became clear that the timing was problematic.

“We discovered that practically, there is still heightened inflation and that the removal of subsidy would further worsen the situation and impose more difficulties on the citizenry.

“Mr. President (Muhammadu Buhari), does not want to do that. What we are now doing is to continue with the ongoing discussions and consultations in terms of putting in place a number of measures.

“One of these include the roll out of the refining capacities of the existing refineries and the new ones which would reduce amount of products that would be imported into the country.

“We therefore need to return to the National Assembly to now amend the budget and make additional provision for subsidy from July 22 to whatever period that we agreed was suitable for the commencement of the total removal’

The Senate President therefore urged the organised labour unions in the country to shelve their proposed nationwide protests as it was no longer necessary.

The meeting dissolved to a closed session and it was still ongoing as at the time of filing this report.

More Details Soon!

NLC issues memo over Jan 27 nationwide strike against subsidy removal

The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) on Thursday, January 20, noted that it will not reverse its decision to call out Nigerian workers on January 27 over the Federal Government’s decision to stop paying fuel subsidies by June.

This was disclosed by the NLC President, Ayuba Wabba, who said the organised Labour had made its intention known on the matter.

According to him, there was no justification whatsoever for the removal.

He said Nigerian workers were being mobilised to go on the planned rally against the decision next Thursday.

Wabba, who noted that some stakeholders were still consulting with the union, said the only thing that could make it shelve the planned protest was for the government to suspend the decision.

The NLC chief noted that before the national protest, the labour union would hold protest rallies in all the 36 states of Nigeria on January 27 against the subsidy removal.

Wabba said the removal of the fuel subsidy would expose Nigerian workers and the citizenry to acute deprivation and worsen the hyper-inflation trend in Nigeria.

The labour leader said Nigerians should not fall for the plans by the Federal Government to disburse N5000 to 40 million poorest Nigerians each as transport grants to cushion the effect of the planned removal of the fuel subsidy.

Wabba said the total amount involved, which he referred to as a queer initiative, was far more than the money government claimed to spend currently on fuel subsidy.

The Labour leader said any law that will impoverish Nigerians rather than lift them from the poverty line should be rejected.

Wabba alleged that those pushing for the subsidy removal were only interested in keeping Nigerians perpetually poor.

He wondered why it has been a difficult task for the country and the regulators of the petroleum sector to fix the refineries, adding that, until they are fixed, the nation would continue a vicious circle that leads nowhere.

Wabba said it was surprising to now see some forces backing the removal.

Reps mulls introduction of 10-year jail term for operators of Ponzi schemes

The House of Reps on Thursday, January 20, debated a bill stating that illegal promoters and operators of Ponzi/Pyramids Schemes in Nigeria are to get a 10-year jail term.

The Reps bill will also make the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) the apex regulatory body for the Nigerian Capital market.

Sponsored by Hon. Babangida Ibrahim (APC, Katsina), the bill essentially seeks to repeal the Investment and Securities Act, 2007 and enact the Investments and Securities Bill to establish Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) as the highest regulatory body in the nation’s capital market.

The bill which passed for second reading during Reps plenary will enable SEC to properly regulate the capital market, ensure capital formation, protect the market to ensure capital formation, protect investors, maintain fair, efficient, and transparent market and reduce systematic risks when passed into law.

Speaking during the debate, Ibrahim said “the Bill prohibits Ponzi/Pyramid Schemes as well as other illegal investment schemes and prescribes a jail term of not less than 10 years for promoters of such schemes. The Commission would also be empowered to shut down such prohibited investment schemes.

“We are enhancing provisions relating to efficient regulation of investment scheme. Recently they is a lot of complaints by Nigerians to the extent of the FG itself but some embargo on us accounts on Ponzi schemes. So as of the time of signing the current act, the Ponzi scheme was not in existence in Nigeria. So we have to put some regulations to monitor them.

“The current ACT regulating the capital market in the securities and investments act of 2007. It was signed by the late Umaru Musa when he was the President. If you calculate from 2007 to date it’s about 15 years. The current reality in the capital market requires that those regulations be improved to enable the regulators(SEC) to perform their optimum functions.

“That is why we are revealing the ACT because that some essential part of the ACT requires amendments and also there is a need to introduce some new sessions of the ACT. The original ACT contains about 266 sessions but the current one contains about 351 sessions.”
