CBN reduces charges on electronic transactions

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has announced a downward review of charges for electronic banking transactions.

This was disclosed in its revised guidelines to charges by Banks, Other Financial Institutions (OFIs) and Non-Bank Financial Institutions.

A circular by Chibuzor Efobi, for the Director, Financial Policy and Regulation Department, stated that the review was in response to “further evolution in the financial industry in the last few years’’.

The apex bank stated that the new guide included review of other bank charges to align with market developments. It stated that it also comprised inclusion of new sections on accountability /responsibility; as well as a sanction regime to directly address instances of excess unapproved (arbitrary) charges.

The CBN added that the revised guidelines took effect from January 1, 2022.

Equally important, the CBN has the mandate to issue the guide to bank charges. The guide provides a basis for the application of charges on various products and services offered by banks; as well as other regulated institutions under the purview of the apex bank.

The guide was first released in 2004 and revised in 2013 and 2017 due to market developments; such as new innovations in products and channels, as well as new industry participants.

Police debunks helicopter crash in Bauchi

The Nigeria Police on Thursday said there was no Police helicopter crash in Bauchi State.

This is contrary to viral reports in some sections of the media (not 1st News).

Specifically, the Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), Mr. Frank Mba made this known in a statement in Abuja. He said the Police helicopter, Bell 429 5NMDA, flying from Abuja to Bauchi was on Tuesday, involved in a controlled safe landing. Further, he added that the landing occurred at the Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa International Airport, Bauchi.

“The aircraft did not crash as being reported in some sections of the media…None of the occupants sustained any injury whatsoever.

“All six onboard including the pilot and co-pilot are in good condition,” he said.

Additionally, Mba said the aircraft, flown by one of the best pilots in the Force, was professionally safe-landed; with minor damage on the rear rotor as a result of obstacles at the landing spot.

The Force spokesman said the incident occurred at about 7.30 pm.

He said the Inspector General of Police (I-G), Mr. Usman Baba, had commended the Police Air-Wing for its professionalism in safe-landing the aircraft and averting any serious air-mishap.

Baba said the Nigeria Police Air-wing; with a fleet of one fixed-wing aircraft, a citation jet, and 13 helicopters; has a strong history of air safety since its establishment in 1972

JUST IN: Hushpuppi to be sentenced on Valentine’s Day

Hushpuppi, arrested Nigerian fraudster, will be sentenced on February 14, 2022.

BBC Pidgin reported that this was confirmed by United States Attorney’s Office at the Central District of California and the court’s Director of Media Relations, Thom Mrozek.

A plea agreement document signed by Hushpuppi; his lawyer, Loius Shapiro; Acting United States Attorney, Tracy Wilkison, amongst others, revealed that he pleaded guilty to various offences bordering on internet scam and money laundering, among others.

He is also accused of colluding with North Korean military hackers, Jon Chang Hyok, Kim Il, and Park Jin Hyok, as well as a Canadian colleague to pull a $14.7 million cyber-heist.

Hushuppi risks getting a 20 years jail sentence; a 3-year period of supervised release; a fine of $500,000 or twice the gross gain or gross loss resulting from the offence.

Same court had also ordered the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to arrest the suspended Head of the Intelligence Response Team, DCP Abba Kyari, for his alleged role in a $1m scam allegedly perpetrated by Hushpuppi and five others.

Nigerian gospel music minister, Sammie Okposo impregnated me – Lady reveals

An American lady, based in Texas, identified as African Doll, has accused Nigerian gospel music minister, Sammie Okposo, of impregnating and abandoning her.

The lady in question made the accusation in a discussion with a YouTuber, Obodo Naija TV.

She disclosed that she met Sammie in Texas when he was on a tour of the US and he invited her to his hotel where she spent the night and messed around with him.

Alongside screenshots of a conversation with the gospel artiste, Doll claimed she had a relationship for months and spent time together until she found out she was pregnant in January.

She disclosed that Sammie told her to abort the baby when she informed him of the pregnancy.

“Sammie okposo got me pregnant and does not want to take responsibility and blocked me on all social media platforms.

“We met at a concert in one church close to my home and we started following each other on Instagram. He asked for my number from Instagram and we started conversing regularly.

“He invited me to his show in Houston Texas in November 2021, he invited me to his hotel and we hung out. I spent the night with him until the next morning.

“We kept speaking even when he invited me to Nigeria, we messed around on several occasions. I am accountable for my part. In December again , he invited me to his show and we messed around.

“I know it’s wrong what I did sleeping with a married man and tried to communicate with him so we can find a way out but he kept telling me I’m trying to disgrace him.”

She, however, said she’s not trying to get anything from him or blackmail him but he disrespected her by calling her names.

“After I left the hospital and called him, he told me to do the needful and get rid of the child after I told him I was pregnant.

“He blocked me and called me names when the issue of the baby came up,” she claimed.

She added that she came out because Sammie has left her to sort out the issue alone.

This is coming at a time when Sammie Okposo apologised to his wife for cheating on her with a mystery lady in the US in 2021.

Federal Polytechnic in Plateau to admit students in 2022 – Governing council chairman

Chairman of the Governing Council for Federal Polytechnic Ny’ak, Shendam, Plateau State Engr. Sistus Ukelina Abetienbe has said that new students will be admitted by the end of the year 2022 as the Polytechnic takes off in the temporary site donated by the Plateau State Government.

The Chairman was speaking when Members of the Governing Council paid a courtesy visit to Governor Simon Lalong at the Government House, Little Rayfield as part of their working visit to the State.

He praised Governor Lalong for not only seeing to the establishment of the Polytechnic, but also making sure that the institution is granted large percel of land, very big and suitable temporary facility with quality infrastructure for take-off, planned provision for basic infrastructure such as power, water, and access road to the permanent site among others.

Engr. Sistus said the institution was fortunate to have been established during the administration of Governor Lalong who is not only passionate about education, but very interested in partnering with the Federal Government to provide educational opportunities for his people.

He disclosed that the Institution will give strength to courses in areas that Plateau has strong advantage such as tourism, agriculture and mining among others.

A statement signed by Simon Macham, the director of press and public affairs to Gov Lalong said while welcoming the delegation ,Lalong said he was eager to ensure that the Polytechnic commences operations because so much efforts have been put in by various stakeholders to bring the dream of the school to fruition.

He said that was why the Government did not hesitate to donate one of the Legacy Schools, the Model Secondary School Ny’ak, which has large infrastructure for the take off of the institution.

He expressed his determination to ensure that the Institution commences operations and develops to gives quality education to citizens of Plateau State and other Nigerians.

The Governor congratulated the Governing Council for their appointment, and again expressed appreciation to the President, Minister of Education and the National Assembly for approving the Institution, saying there is high hope that the Federal College of Education Pankshin will soon be upgraded to a University of Education once the President signs the bill before him into law.

Rector of the Polytechnic Dr. Mikaila Zakari Ya’u said the efforts of Governor Lalong has made the task of commencing academic activities of the school very seamless.
