Organized by Christian Denominational leaders in conjunction with the State Chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN
President of the Church of Christ in Nations (COCIN), Rev. Dr. Amos M. Mohzo said the Solemn Assembly was initiated by denominational leaders in the state to strengthen the Christian faith and pray against evil activities that have set the state backward.
He said the reason behind the solemn assembly was to pray for unity amongst the denominations and all Christians on the Plateau. Pray for the security challenges facing the state and the nation, and peaceful co-existence among the people of Plateau and the nation at large.
“Pray for the political parties to conduct primary elections that will produce credible candidates for final elections into various political offices in the state and the nation respectively. To pray for revival amongst Christians on the Plateau, in Nigeria and globally.”

In a sermon, Evangelical Church Winning All, ECWA President and Chairman of the Forum of Christian Denominational Heads in Plateau State Rev. Stephen Baba, said Plateau is a land blessed by God in all ramifications with great people and abundant resources that are second to none in Nigeria. He said, “Plateau has remained the hope of salvation for the North and other parts of Nigeria having pioneered and continuously promoted the work of evangelism and spread of the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ to the unsaved.”
Although the state and its people have been under attack by forces of evil who have killed and destroyed properties of innocent citizens, he maintained that “the wonderful heritage bestowed on Plateau by God will never be taken away if the people return to God and continue to obey the Lord, love one another, and seek to do His will at all times.”
The Plateau State Governor, Simon Lalong while addressing the gathering, said the solemn assembly came at the right time when the peace and progress of Nigeria and Plateau State are more than ever before being challenged.
According to him, “Looking at the level of wickedness and manifestation of evil that is threatening our peaceful coexistence and the safety of lives and properties, the call to prayers and repentance is a collective one that emphasizes soul-searching by everyone.
“This is because the challenges we face today cannot be said to be the fault of a few persons only. Similarly, the efforts to restore the fortunes of our State and country cannot be carried out by a few persons alone.”
He regretted that many times, people allow ethnicity, religion, denominational differences, politics, pride, money, greed and selfishness to take control of their lives to the point that they treat people as if they were not created by the Almighty God.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has closed its case against a former Plateau State Governor, Jonah Jang.
Also facing trial is a former cashier in the Office of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Yusuf Pam.
Justice C. L. Dabup of Plateau State High Court in Jos is presiding over the case.
Jang and Pam are being prosecuted for alleged criminal breach of trust and misappropriation of state funds to the tune of N6.3billion.
The EFCC presented fourteen witnesses and tendered several exhibits.
At the last sitting, the EFCC had presented its fourteenth witness (PW14), Taiwo Oloronyomi.
Oloronyomi is a Chief Superintendent of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offence Commission (ICPC).
While presenting his evidence, Pam’s counsel, S. Olawale raised an objection, arguing that the statement of his client to the ICPC was not voluntary.
Olawale told the court that his client was subjected to physical and psychological torture by one Hajiya Fatima Mohammed of the commission.
But Justice Dabup admitted the statement Pam made on November 17, 2016 to the ICPC.
It contained details of the withdrawal of monies taken to Jang through cheques approved by the Permanent Secretary in the SSG’s office.
The judge however rejected the statement Pam made on November 23, 2016, on grounds that the mandatory cautionary word was not taken before Pam wrote it.
The defendants were expected to open their defence today but Jang’s counsel, Mike Ozekhome (SAN) and Olawale informed the court of their decision not to do so.
“If we are not providing any evidence, the law says that the prosecution has 14 days to address the court, ten days for the defence to reply, and another 5 days for the prosecution to reply on point of law”, Ozekhome said.
The US Supreme Court has ruled against a Texas law; which effectively barred social media companies from moderating user content online; temporarily blocking the legislation as a major legal battle plays out between the state government and Big Tech lobbies.
In an opinion handed down on Tuesday; the court said it would grant a preliminary injunction against the Texas attorney general, prohibiting him from enforcing the law in question; after a pair of major trade associations sued on allegations that it is “facially unconstitutional” under the First Amendment.
The law, dubbed HB20, states that large social media platforms may not “censor a user; a user’s expression; or a user’s ability to receive the expression of another person” under most circumstances, and was passed by Texas Republicans claiming that social media sites disproportionately target conservative users.
After signing the bill, Governor Greg Abbott pointed to a “dangerous movement by social media companies to silence conservative viewpoints and ideas,” insisting “we will not allow it in Texas.”
While the court’s injunction is temporary and will merely block the law from being enforced as the legal clash unfolds; Big Tech lobbyists involved in the case have nonetheless cheered the decision.
“This ruling means that private American companies will have an opportunity to be heard in court before they are forced to disseminate vile; abusive or extremist content under this Texas law,” said Matt Schruers, president of the Computer and Communications Industry Association.
The association represents a who’s-who of Big Tech and social media firms, among them Twitter, Facebook, Google, Amazon and Apple.
Another lobbying group with a similar roster of major firms; NetChoice, is also taking part in the lawsuit.
While Tuesday’s opinion did not explain the justices’ reasoning, it did include a dissent from conservative Justice Samuel Alito; who stressed the importance of states’ rights against federal intrusion.
“While I can understand the Court’s apparent desire to delay enforcement of HB20 while the appeal is pending; the preliminary injunction issued by the District Court; was itself a significant intrusion on state sovereignty,” Alito wrote, referring to a previous ruling by a lower court.
He added that “Texas should not be required to seek pre-clearance from the federal court before its laws go into effect.”
The ruling follows a similar decision by a US appeals court in May; which struck down a Florida law seeking to impose restrictions on social media companies and their moderation practices.
Signed by Governor Ron DeSantis last year; the law would have enabled the state government to fine social media firms up to $250,000 per day, among other penalties; if they were found to have removed the account of a statewide political candidate.
As with the Texas legislation, lobbying outfits NetChoice and the Computer and Communications Industry Association were both involved in challenging the Florida law.
The Nigerian Army (NA) has been notified of the insinuation making the rounds on social media, alleging complicity of troops of the Nigerian Army in the kidnap incident of the Methodist Prelate in Abia state recently.
While the Nigerian Army expresses concern and sympathy for the victim of this heinous crime and shares in his pains, the insinuation that troops are complicit in the kidnap incident is not entirely premised on any findings of investigations and therefore cannot be swallowed hook line and sinker. This allegation therefore raises some pertinent questions which are still unanswered.
Given, the spate of insecurity in the region, the question would be, was the issue reported to the unit covering the area? Did the Methodist Church take the NA into confidence while negotiating the ransom with the kidnappers? No formal complaint has been received by the unit. More worrisome is the fact that it was alleged that the ransom was paid in less than 24 hours. Was the ransome paid to troops? These are questions that beg for answers.
Moreso, the NA unit, has not received any debrief from the Prelate or the Methodist Church. It is therefore, important to state that troops are deployed at Forward Operating Base(FOB) Okigwe and in front of the Abia State University Uturu and no information was made available to them or to 14 Brigade or any other formation, except the information making the rounds in the social media.
It must be clarified that troops’ deployment in the Nigerian Army is not done with considerations for ethnic affiliation, hence a deployment of troops of Fulani ethnic extraction who as alleged by the Prelate, carried out the dastardly act is not our practice or modus operandi in the NA.
Given our professional disposition and zero tolerance for any misconduct in the Nigerian Army , we will take this weighty allegation seriously and approach the Prelate and the Methodist church to unravel the basis for the allegation.
