Okupe mocks APC over ‘failed’ Lagos rally

Doyin Okupe, the director general of the Labour Party’s (LP) presidential campaign committee, has made fun of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) over a gathering that was recently conducted in favour of Bola Tinubu, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate.

In an interview with Channels Television on Sunday, October 9, Mr. Okupe referred to the “five million-man” rally in Lagos in support of Mr. Tinubu as a “catch up” that wasn’t well done.

The gathering was called by Musiliu Akinsanya, also known as MC Oluomo, the state’s chairman of the transport workers.

It was in response to previous rallies held in Lekki, FESTAC, Ikeja, and Surulere in favor of Peter Obi, the LP candidate.

While criticisms have continued to trail the rally which grounded activities in the state, Mr Okupe said the counter rally did not match the zeal of Nigerian youth fronting “the Obidient movement” across the country.

“One of the greatest things that has happened in this dispensation is that a four-month-old party is now so much in leadership that parties that have existed for 20 years and more are playing a catch-up game and it is not being done very well.

“I want to congratulate the APC for the efforts made today. What you saw was not a Lagos rally. We are a very sophisticated group, a group driven by and powered by youths,” Mr Okupe said.

Without evidence, the LP campaign DG claimed that people seen at Mr Tinubu’s rally were imported from other South-west states and should not be compared to the “organic” crowd that attended rallies held in support of Mr Obi.

“What you saw this morning was a South-west rally, not really a Lagos rally. If you give it as a Lagos rally, it is just a fair comparison with what happened in Festac.

“You will recall that the October 1, LP rally by Obidents took place in an unprecedented and organic manner in Lekki, Festac, Ikeja and Surulere — in four different locations.

“What you saw in Lagos today was nothing compared to any one of them (referring to the four locations), maybe at least it is at par with one of them. What APC has been able to do, having seen the LP movement, is still about a quarter of what we did,” he boasted.

Fire guts Kogi Assembly

Fire has engulfed the Kogi State House of Assembly complex located at Crusher Area, Lokoja. The incident was said to have happened on Monday morning.

The Chamber’s floor sustained significant damage as a result of the fire that tore through the ceiling.

The state security adviser, Commander Jerry Omodara, and the speaker of the house, Mathew Kolawole, were among the first people to arrive at the assembly building.

The Speaker of the House, Prince Mathew Kolawole spoke to journalists at the assembly complex. He said the house will allow security agencies to investigate the incident.

He further said that he suspects sabotage but fell short of where the suspected sabotage might be from. When asked whether it could be linked with the recent happening between the Assembly and Dangote group, he said that that is left to the security to determine.

He, however, said this would not stop the assembly from performing its duty; as the resolution of the house concerning Dangote Cement Plc stands.

Recall that there is an ongoing dispute between Kogi State Government and Dangote Group over the ownership of Dangote Cement Plc; and the alleged non-payment of taxes and revenues due to the state government by the company. Kogi State government had last Wednesday sealed Dangote Cement’s factory located in Obajana over alleged tax evasion and equity ownership.

The cause of the fire incident was still unknown at the time of filing this report.

Crypto scammers dupe Binance of $100million

Scammers have stolen $100 million in cryptocurrency from Binance, the world’s biggest exchange for crypto assets, the firm said on Friday.

Company chief Changpeng Zhao wrote; on Twitter that “an exploit” in the system led to; extra production of the exchange’s dedicated currency, adding: “The current impact estimate is around $100m.”

“The issue is contained now. Your funds are safe. We apologize for the inconvenience and will provide further updates accordingly,” he wrote.

It is among the biggest thefts in cryptocurrency history, although it is still dwarfed by the mammoth heist; of more than $500 million from the Axie Infinity blockchain game earlier this year.

Scammers are increasingly using; weaknesses in “cross-chain bridges” — the means used by investors to move assets from one blockchain to another.

Blockchains are digital ledgers that store details of transactions — the biggest is; bitcoin but there are thousands of others.

Changpeng Zhao wrote that the theft; involved “an exploit on a cross-chain bridge, BSC Token Hub”, reassuring customers it had been; fixed.

The exchange said on Reddit that the amount taken was between $100 and $110 million, adding that $7 million had already been recovered.

The Axie Infinity hack and another heist last month on crypto firm Nomad of almost $200 million also involved bridges being exploited.

Chainalysis, a crypto analysis firm, said in August that bridge exploits had accounted for around $2 billion in thefts this year already.

Elliptic, another analysis firm, said in its crime report this week that bridges “tend to accumulate large amounts of locked assets on numerous blockchains, many of which may not have advanced security or auditing cultures due to their relative obscurity”.

“This has made bridges an attractive target for cybercriminals in the past,” it added.
