Breaking: Ministerial nominee collapses during screening

A ministerial nominee, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, fainted while undergoing scrutiny in the Senate on Wednesday.

Amidst the questioning, Lawal, clearly fatigued, suddenly lost consciousness.

Concerned senators raced to his aid and promptly dialed for help.

Upon the incident’s occurrence, Senate President Godswil Akpabio could be heard urgently requesting water and sugar to revive the ministerial nominee.

“Water, water! Can we get some sugar and water? Someone, please bring water and sugar! And please, summon Dr. Wale!” Akpabio exclaimed.

He also instructed the cameramen to exit the chamber as the senators endeavored to assist Abbas to a nearby seat.

At the time of this report, he had been transported to the hospital, although his current condition remained uncertain.

Furthermore, it was not immediately evident whether medical personnel were present, but the National Assembly maintains a fully operational clinic within the complex.

Abbas Lawal from Kaduna State underwent screening today alongside Jamila Bio Ibrahim from Kwara State and Mr. Ayodele Olawande from Ondo State.

Lawal was the second nominee to face the screening process.

Recall that Balarabe Abbas Lawal was nominated by President Bola Tinubu as replacement for former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai.

Tinubu writes Senate, requests confirmation for ministerial nominees

President Bola Tinubu, in a letter to the Senate, requested confirmation for three additional cabinet nominations.

When the parliamentarians reconvened in plenary session on Tuesday, Senate President Godswill Akpabio read a letter from President Tinubu demanding the ratification of the nominations.

The candidates are Mr. Ayodele Olawande from Ondo State, Dr. Jamila Bio Ibrahim from Kwara State, and Balarabe Abbas Lawal from Kaduna State.

In August 2023, the Senate vetted and confirmed 45 nominations for cabinet positions while rejecting three of them. Nasir El-Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna State, is notable among those who have not been confirmed.

Mrs. Stella Okotete from Delta State and Mr. Abubakar Danladi from Taraba State were the other two nominees that were turned down at that time.

A lawmaker had raised concern over a “serious petition” against El-Rufai during the screening ceremony.

Senator Sunday Karimi from Kogi West had drawn the attention of the lawmakers to the petitions against the former FCT minister.

“Your performance in any office you find yourself in the country has been outstanding. In the Bureau of Public Enterprises, your record is there, in FCT as a minister, your record is there, and as two-time governor of Kaduna state, you did well,” he said after El-Rufai’s presentation.

“But, I also have a very strong petition against you that borders on security, unity, and cohesiveness of the Nigerian nation,” the All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmaker added. “Nonetheless, I think that the petition has to be considered in this screening exercise.”

Mohbad: Police take Naira Marley into custody for questioning

Police authorities in Lagos State have taken Naira Marley into custody for questioning over the death of Mohbad.

“Azeez Fashola aka Naira Marley has been taken into custody for interrogation and other investigation activities,” Lagos police command spokesman Benjamin Hundeyin said late Tuesday.

Naira Marley is required to help the authorities with their investigation into the death of his former signee Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as MohBad,

Although the musician has been charged with being involved in Mohbad’s death, he has vowed to clear his reputation; and had already confirmed his presence in Nigeria before the police’s statement to assist the investigation into the death of his former signee.

“I’d like to share that I’ve just arrived back in Lagos, Nigeria to assist the authorities with the ongoing investigation,” he tweeted on Tuesday.

“It’s important I do my part for Imole. I’ll be meeting with the police with hopes for the truth to be uncovered and for justice to prevail.”

The action taken on Tuesday is the most recent development after Mohbad’s passing. He allegedly suffered abuse before passing away, and his death occurred in suspicious circumstances.

Nigerians have sought a probe into the circumstances of his death ever since he passed away. Many areas of Nigeria saw protests as young people flocked the streets to express their outrage over the singer’s passing.

Police officials exhumed Mohbad’s body despite the fact that he was buried less than two days after passing away. Later, an autopsy was performed, but the results are still pending.

The Senate visited the late singer’s family and observed a moment of silence in honour of the star’s passing; showing that the Federal Government has also taken an interest in the situation.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu invited the Department of State Services (DSS) to participate in the investigation. He also pledged to see that justice was done.

What Chicago University Registrar testified about Tinubu

A Registrar of Chicago State University, Caleb Westberg, on Tuesday, swore under oath that President Bola Tinubu attended and graduated from the institution in 1979.

Westberg also admitted that the admission letter issued to the Nigerian President evidently proved he was; a male and attended the school between 1977 and 1979.

He said: “There were; materials in Mr. Tinubu’s records that show he was; a male in the application to CSU. Mr Tinubu identified himself as a male. His letter of admission identified him as a male. It says: ‘Dear Mr. Tinubu’”

His testimonies were; contained in a deposition made in the Office of Angela Liu, the legal counsel to former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, in Chicago, United States.

Tinubu

Liu has five lawyers from her firm who joined the legal proceedings on Zoom while the CSU was; represented by Michael Hayes.

Tinubu, on the other hand, was represented by counsel Victor P. Henderson and Oluwole Afolabi.

Continuing with his testimony, Westberg told the court the institution was; inundated with five to 30 enquiries daily by people who desperately; wanted to confirm if the president truly attended the varsity.

He also denied that the alma mater notified the former governor of Lagos about any of the requests.

He deposed, “We believe Bola Tinubu who attended CSU is; the same person who is the president of Nigeria today. Tinubu is an unusual name in the US. He matched the records in the file against the information provided by the student or on behalf of the student.

”We believe Bola Tinubu who attended CSU is; the same person who is the president of Nigeria today. The university only has diplomas that students didn’t pick up in its possession.

“I have the diploma that was made available to Mr. Enahoro-Ebah in our possession because Mr. Tinubu did not pick it up. I do not have the Diploma that was submitted to INEC in our possession because he had picked it.”

When probed further to confirm if the Tinubu that enrolled at the school was a male or female, the registrar insisted, “Tinubu applied to the university as a male and a letter of admission was issued to a male.”

Breaking News: Organized Labour Suspends Indefinite Strike

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have jointly decided to halt the previously scheduled indefinite strike set for October 3, 2023, which was in response to the removal of fuel subsidies. It is worth noting that the Nigeria Labour Congress had previously instructed its affiliated unions nationwide to mobilize and stage a country-wide shutdown due to the government’s refusal to address the seven-point demands made by the NLC and TUC to alleviate the hardships faced by Nigerian workers and the impoverished masses.

In a parallel move, Comrade (Prince) Dr. Adewale Adeyanju, the President-General of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), had also issued an order to close down all the nation’s seaports, jetties, oil & gas platforms, and terminals.

However, following an emergency meeting held today, October 2, 2023, between the federal government and labor leaders, the NLC and TUC jointly agreed to suspend the strike to allow for the implementation of the NLC’s demands. Consequently, the National Executive Council (NEC) of the NLC has directed all its affiliated members to instruct their members to return to work on October 3, 2023, as the previously planned indefinite strike has been suspended.

In a statement issued by Comrade Adeyanju, the Deputy President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, and signed by Cmr. John Kennedy Ikemefuna, the Head of Media of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), it has been similarly directed that all members of the Maritime sector should also resume work as instructed by the Nigeria Labour Congress.
