INEC SMCS Plateau State Hosts Business Seminar to Empower Members with Financial Literacy and Investment Skills

The INEC Staff Multi-Purpose Cooperative Society (INEC SMCS) in Plateau State held a pivotal business seminar and congress meeting at the INEC Plateau Head Office on Miango Road, Kufang, Plateau State. 7th November, 2024

This event was aimed at strengthening financial literacy, fostering entrepreneurial skills, and promoting sustainable wealth-building practices among its members.

At the heart of the seminar, Mr. Badi Datong, president of INEC SMCS Plateau State, emphasized the cooperative’s commitment to empowering its members. Addressing the attendees, he underscored the importance of financial inclusion, capacity building, and entrepreneurship in helping members navigate the current economic challenges, especially given rising inflation. Datong stressed the critical role of early financial planning to secure a comfortable retirement, referencing the federal government’s recent pension fund borrowing as a reminder of the need for individual self-reliance. He urged participants to make the most of the seminar’s opportunities to gain practical skills, network with peers, and draw inspiration for a financially secure future. Datong expressed appreciation to the Resident Electoral Commissioner and his team for their support and encouraged attendees to adopt a forward-thinking approach to finances.

Hon. Associate Professor Oliver Tersoo Agundu, Resident Electoral Commissioner of INEC Plateau State, also highlighted the need for diligent financial planning, saving, and investing. Commending the cooperative’s leadership for organizing the seminar, Agundu shared his evolving views on financial responsibility. He reflected on the experiences of colleagues who faced financial hardship due to inadequate planning and encouraged the attendees to heed the guest speaker’s advice. According to Agundu, proactive saving and investment habits are crucial for ensuring financial stability in retirement.

A notable segment of the seminar was a presentation by SANLAM Nigeria, under the department of insurance at First Bank Nigeria, which introduced members to future savings packages. This was followed by a paper presentation by Professor Yohanna G. Jugu, who provided an in-depth discussion on the importance of savings and investment, followed by a question-and-answer session to clarify attendees’ queries.

Mr. Gimba Ishaku, former president of INEC SMCS Plateau State, further emphasized financial discipline, urging members to avoid “fake lifestyles” and focus on prudent spending and investing in appreciating assets such as land. Ishaku highlighted a successful land-buying initiative under his leadership, which had significantly increased in value, benefitting cooperative members.

The seminar concluded with the establishment of the Election Committee (ELCOM) for INEC SMCS, where nominated members were introduced, and brief remarks were given by the ELCOM Chairman, Engr. Wakili Tol.

NOA Partners with NPC, UNICEF to Launch Digital Birth Registration Drive in Plateau State

In a significant step towards ensuring the welfare of Nigerian children, the National Orientation Agency (NOA) has partnered with the National Population Commission (NPC) and the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) to launch a comprehensive digital birth registration campaign for children aged zero to five in Plateau State. The initiative, unveiled at a press conference held in the Federal Secretariat Complex, Jos, is part of the “Birth Registration Social Mobilization Campaign” aimed at reaching every child across the state’s 17 local government areas.

Plateau State Director of NOA, Mrs. Kaneng Tabitha Pam-Hworo, emphasized the importance of this door-to-door campaign, which will be free and widely accessible. “We want everybody, especially parents, to know that birth registration should be taken seriously,” she said, highlighting the campaign’s critical role in ensuring children have documented identities from birth, which is essential for accessing education, healthcare, and social protection.

The Director General of the NPC, Ojogun Tellson Osifo, represented by Director of Special Duties Mr. David Akoji, noted that birth registration is the first legal acknowledgment of a child’s existence, helping safeguard their rights. He encouraged parents to visit the nearest NPC centers, where children will be registered and receive a National Identification Number (NIN). This step is integral to providing essential services from the earliest stages of life, he explained, adding, “UNICEF’s intervention reflects a commitment to ensuring our data meets global standards.”

NOA’s Director General, Dr. Lanre Issa-Onilu, stressed the long-term benefits of accurate birth registration for national planning and development. “This drive aims to ensure that every child in Nigeria has access to essential services like education, healthcare, and social protection. Birth registration is a fundamental right of every child, and this initiative highlights its importance to the child, family, community, and nation.”

Dr. Issa-Onilu urged parents to take advantage of the initiative, which will run through November 2024, to register children aged 0-5 and secure their futures. “Every child will receive a NIN upon face capturing and birth registration. We urge all parents, guardians, and community leaders to participate in this crucial exercise. Let’s work together to give every child in Nigeria the best start in life,” he added.

With support from NOA, NPC, and UNICEF, this campaign represents a significant stride towards comprehensive child welfare and a more data-informed approach to national development in Nigeria.

Gregor then turned to look out the window at the dull weather. Drops of rain could be heard hitting the pane, which made him feel quite sad. “How about if I sleep a little bit longer and forget all this nonsense”, he thought, but that was something he was unable to do because he was used to sleeping on his right, and in his present state couldn’t get into that position. However hard he threw himself onto his right, he always rolled back to where he was.

One morning, when Gregor Samsa woke from troubled dreams, he found himself transformed in his bed into a horrible vermin. He lay on his armour-like back, and if he lifted his head a little he could see his brown belly, slightly domed and divided by arches into stiff sections. The bedding was hardly able to cover it and seemed ready to slide off any moment. His many legs, pitifully thin compared with the size of the rest of him, waved about helplessly as he looked. “What’s happened to me? ” he thought. It wasn’t a dream.

Trump Secures Presidency Again: A Look at the Road to the 47th Oval Office Term

In an unprecedented comeback, Donald Trump has secured his place as the 47th President of the United States, marking his second term in office after a four-year hiatus. His victory follows an intense and polarizing campaign season that saw Trump leverage his unwavering base, significant social media presence, and a revamped political strategy aimed at addressing the economic and security concerns of a divided electorate.

The road to Trump’s victory was shaped by a unique blend of traditional campaign rallies and a strong digital outreach strategy. His campaign capitalized on economic anxieties and promises to curb inflation and strengthen national security, alongside pledges to bring manufacturing jobs back to American soil. Trump’s approach connected with voters in swing states, securing crucial electoral votes that pushed him to victory.

Internationally, reactions to Trump’s win are mixed. Allies and rivals alike are preparing for policy shifts, with heightened attention on trade and foreign policy stances Trump promoted during his campaign. His administration is expected to prioritize “America First” policies, which could lead to renegotiations in areas like trade, climate, and military alliances.

With Trump’s return to office, the nation anticipates a dynamic four years marked by assertive policy changes, setting the stage for a distinctive second term.

What to do in Uluwatu Bali

A collection of textile samples lay spread out on the table – Samsa was a travelling salesman – and above it there hung a picture that he had recently cut out of an illustrated magazine and housed in a nice, gilded frame. Plateau State University Begins 2024/2025 Academic Session with Enhanced Standards and Strict Schedules

Plateau State University, Bokkos, has officially kicked off its 2024/2025 academic session, following the approval of the academic calendar by the university’s Senate on November 5. Returning students are already engaged in online registration, and the first list of admissions for the 2023/2024 session has been published.

Under the leadership of Acting Vice Chancellor Prof. Shedrack Best, who communicated through Deputy Vice Chancellor Academics Prof. Moses Pyefa Galadima, the university emphasized a commitment to upholding academic standards. Lectures are set to commence on Monday, November 11, reflecting the institution’s goal of setting a new benchmark for prompt academic engagement.

“We want to change the popular perception that no academic activities happen within the first week of resumption and prior to Christmas,” Prof. Best stated, reinforcing the Senate’s dedication to ensuring students are prepared to compete on a national level.

In addition, Senate approved a flexible two-installment payment plan for tuition fees—70% in the first semester and 30% in the second semester—with a November 24 deadline for the initial payment to avoid a late fee.

The session also highlighted the university’s focus on security and efficiency. A new allocation plan for hostel accommodations grants 90% of spaces to new students, and efforts are underway to digitize university operations for better student record management. The Senate further addressed safety on campus by regulating commercial motorcycle movement and reinforcing policies on union fees and departmental charges, along with enforcing a ban on unauthorized handouts by lecturers.

This proactive approach signals Plateau State University’s dedication to a productive academic year while enhancing safety, accessibility, and operational efficiency across the campus.

Equatorial Guinea’s Anti-Corruption Official Baltasar Engonga Faces Social Media Scandal

Baltasar Engonga, a high-ranking anti-corruption official in Equatorial Guinea, has become the focus of a social media storm following the release of explicit content allegedly involving him. Engonga, known for his prominent role in addressing financial crimes in the oil-rich Central African nation, is now facing intense scrutiny online, particularly on X (Twitter). The scandal has spurred widespread discussions on the impact of such personal controversies on the integrity of public officials.

The leak comes at a critical time for Equatorial Guinea, which has faced criticism for its human rights record and governance standards. The government has historically maintained a tight grip on media freedom, often stifling dissent and limiting the operations of independent journalists and NGOs. As a result, social media platforms have emerged as alternative channels for citizens to share news and express their opinions. This incident marks yet another instance where Equatorial Guinea’s political elite faces public backlash through unregulated online discourse, shining a light on the public’s frustration with limited transparency and accountability.

The responses to the scandal vary widely, with some calling for Engonga’s resignation, while others question the leak’s authenticity. This controversy has drawn attention from international observers concerned about the impact of such scandals on the country’s anti-corruption efforts. Engonga’s position was seen as vital in efforts to curb financial malpractice, raising concerns over how his involvement in this controversy could affect public trust in anti-corruption initiatives.

As the scandal unfolds, it highlights a shift toward digital advocacy in countries with restricted media freedom, underscoring social media’s role in amplifying voices within otherwise closed environments.
