Nigerians Groan As Cooking Gas Price Hits N1,800 Per Kilogram Amid Shortage

The cost of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), commonly known as cooking gas, has surged sharply across several Nigerian cities, including Lagos, Ogun, and Ibadan, following a nationwide shortage.

The scarcity was triggered by a three-day strike by oil workers, which disrupted gas supply and distribution across the country. Prices have also spiked in other states such as Port Harcourt, Cross River, Kano, and Kaduna.

The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) had embarked on the strike last week to protest the dismissal of some workers at the Dangote Refinery.

Although the strike has since been suspended, the brief disruption in supply caused many gas depots to run dry, leading to rationing and steep price hikes.

In many parts of the country, the price of cooking gas has jumped from around ₦1,000 per kilogram to between ₦1,600 and ₦1,800.

In Abuja, refilling a 12.5kg cylinder now costs between ₦17,000 and ₦18,750, depending on the location. In districts such as Wuse, Garki, and Kubwa, a kilogram of LPG sells for ₦1,350 to ₦1,500, while some outlets in Jabi offer a 12.5kg refill for about ₦17,000.

Retailers in the city report that many outlets ran out of stock by Sunday, while those still selling gas increased their prices significantly.

A similar situation is unfolding in Lagos and Ogun States, where the price per kilogram rose from about ₦1,000 and ₦1,100 respectively last week to between ₦1,300 and ₦1,800 over the weekend.

Across Nigeria, households and small businesses continue to feel the impact of the gas shortage, as prices soar daily with no immediate relief in sight.

The President gave the assurance during a meeting with Christian leaders at the headquarters of the Church of Christ in Nations (COCIN) in Jos, Plateau State, as part of his visit to attend the funeral of the late Nana Lydia Yilwatda, mother of the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda.

“I have a mission to unite this country, ensure its prosperity, and we are making progress,” President Tinubu said, emphasizing that his government’s priority is to foster peace and development among all Nigerians, regardless of faith.

While paying tribute to the late Lydia Yilwatda, who passed away at the age of 83, the President described her as “a devoted mother and a humanitarian whose life reflected faith and compassion.”

At the funeral service, the chief mourner, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, described his late mother as a hardworking and resilient woman who lived with a medical condition for 47 years yet remained dedicated to her family and community.

“My mother worked tirelessly despite her health challenges, always supporting others and offering humanitarian assistance,” he said, while expressing gratitude to President Tinubu for his support and leadership.

In his remarks, Reverend Dr. Amos Mohzo, President and Spiritual Leader of COCIN, commended the President for his inclusive leadership, particularly his appointment of Northern Christians to key national positions, such as Senator George Akume as Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) and Professor Nentawe Yilwatda as APC National Chairman.

Mohzo also appreciated the President’s efforts toward restoring peace in Plateau and Benue States and appealed for continued support for victims of conflict and displaced Christian communities in Borno and Adamawa States.

He pledged the church’s support for the success of the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

The funeral service was attended by several dignitaries, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio; Chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq; National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu; Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State and several APC governors and ministers.

Police Arrest Popular Pastor Over ‘Marathon Sex’ With Female Sickle Cell Patient

The Ebonyi State Police Command has arrested a cleric and General Overseer of Champion the Truth Cathedral, Bishop Ndibueze Onyagoziri Okorie, for allegedly having a marathon sex with a 22-year-old female sickle cell patient in the State.

Confirming the arrest, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Joshua Ukandu, said the suspect was their custody while investigation was ongoing on the matter.

“Yes, the Bishop is with us here at the police headquarters, Abakaliki. I don’t have any other information, it is under investigation.

“On Wednesday 1st October, he was arrested by our men and brought to the state police command over the act,” the Police spokesman said.

However, in a viral video on social media, the victim said that she started living with the cleric following her health condition after the decision of the cleric and that of her family that she should be living in the church to enable her to be healed from her illness through divine treatment.

She noted that the spiritual healing failed to solve the her problem as her case worsened. She alleged that the Bishop had assured her that a seven-day sex with him was all she needed for her genotype to change from SS to AA.

She further stated that because of her desperation to survive the sickness that has already taken the lives of her three other siblings, she gave in to the option.

She lamented that after the seven-day sexual intercourse with the general overseer, her health issues became compounded and she raised the alarm and informed her sister about it.

Her elder sister, according to her, stepped into the matter and insisted she must return home since the so-called divine treatment was no longer working.

The victim said that the Bishop repeatedly threatened to upload pictures of their sexual activities if she leaves him. According to her, she later left the cleric and went back to her village only to see her nude pictures with the cleric on social media, eliciting reactions.

Meanwhile, Bishop Onyeagoziri has denied having any sexual intercourse with the victim, adding that his phone was stolen and those who stole the phone used Artificial Intelligence to post his nudity with that of the girl.

N853 Billion Crime Proceeds Recovered In One Year – EFCC

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission says it recovered N364.5bn and $326.5m crime proceeds between 2023 and 2024.

The commission said the recoveries, which it described as unprecedented, were complemented by extensive monitoring of government intervention funds, including the PL-CNG scheme, NG-CARES, NACA Global Fund, SESET, AMCON loans, and various Central Bank of Nigeria facilities, such as COVID-19 support schemes and conversion loans with 15 percent cover.

During the same period, the EFCC said it received 15,724 petitions, investigated 12,928 of them, filed 5,081 cases in court, and secured 4,171 convictions, while 2,348 cases remain pending.

“These figures are not just numbers; they represent deterrence, restitution, and a firm statement that corruption will not be tolerated,” the EFCC stated, stressing that its operations go beyond curbing internet fraud to protecting national assets and ensuring that critical intervention funds reach their intended beneficiaries.

The commission added that all recoveries and convictions were secured under strict adherence to due process and judicial oversight, a factor it said has strengthened public confidence in its operations.

The commission described the achievements as evidence of its expanding influence in safeguarding Nigeria’s financial system, with many noting that its performance reaffirms the country’s leadership in Africa’s anti-graft fight at a time of persistent challenges from corruption, mismanagement, and economic sabotage.

Pastor Remanded For Rap!ng Two Sisters During Deliverance, Blame It On Devil

A 63-year-old pastor, Luke Eze, has been remanded in prison custody for allegedly raping two sisters, aged 16 and 19, during a purported deliverance session in Enugu State.

The state Police spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, said in a statement on Tuesday.

Ndukwe explained that the incident occurred on September 7, 2025, at Eze’s church, City of Hope Ministry, popularly known as Ọkụ Night.

According to the police, the pastor lured the younger victim into an empty-mortar-pounding ritual, then gave her a stupefying liquid that rendered her unconscious before assaulting her.

When she failed to return home, her 19-year-old sister went in search of her and was subjected to the same ordeal.

“Both victims regained consciousness the following afternoon to find themselves naked, with bloodstains and other physical evidence of the assault,” Ndukwe said, adding that two bottles of the substance used were recovered for forensic analysis.

He disclosed that the suspect confessed to the crime, blaming it on “the devil.”

Following investigations by the Gender and Anti-Human Trafficking Section of the State CID, he was arraigned and remanded in correctional custody.

Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, described the act as “abominable and senseless,” while warning the public against falling prey to criminal elements hiding under the guise of spiritual leadership.
