GOV. LALONG RECEIVES SPEAKER FEMI GBAJABIAMILA, CONDOLES HIM OVER LOSS OF MOTHER INLAW

Plateau State Governor, Simon Bako Lalong on Sunday 12th April 2020 received Speaker, House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila who was in Jos to condole with the family of his wife over the loss of his mother-in-law, Mrs. Mildred Bisalla who died in Jos at the age of 83.

Governor Lalong who received the Speaker at the Government House Rayfield Jos, described the death of Mrs. Mildred Bisalla as a great loss to the Plateau State and Nigeria as she was an epitome of humility, service and godliness.

The Governor and Speaker later visited the residence of the deceased in Jos where they were received by her brother, Archbishop Benjamin Kwashi, Anglican Bishop of Jos Diocese.

Governor Lalong consoled the family and urged them to accept the loss as part of life, taking joy in the fact that the deceased lived a life of love and served her generation in many ways, leaving behind worthy legacies.

He said, “Mama has gone to be with the Lord and we have to accept her call to glory. She left at a time when we are facing very serious challenges with Corona Virus and we need people like them to give us hope and consolation based on their experiences of things that happened before, but unfortunately she has gone to be with the Lord Jesus Christ. Ours is to look at what she has done to emulate her and do better. May her soul rest in peace and may we be consoled”.

He also consoled the speaker for the loss and appreciated his early visit to sympathize with his in-laws and the people of Plateau State on the departure of Mama, saying the people of the State appreciate the visit.
Archbishop Benjamin Kwashi while responding on behalf of the family thanked the Governor Simon Lalong and Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila for their words of comfort at this difficult time when they are working hard to overcome the corona virus pandemic which is ravaging the world.
He said “Your Excellency Governor Lalong, you have beaten all protocols to visit us at this time when we are all battling to overcome this corona virus pandemic.

The family deeply appreciates this visit and we urge Nigerians to continue to support the Government.  I have the faith that somehow, the Lord will deliver us from the corona virus Pandemic. I was looking at the 1920 Spanish flu pandemic. It was reported that thousands died around neighbours of Jos, but the people were spared. God can still do this for us”.

He commended Speaker Gbajabiamila for standing up for the weak and urged him to continue to advocate the poor who are in majority. This he says is the only way Nigeria can be salvaged because God hearkens to the cries of the poor.

They later visited the mortuary at the Airforce Hospital Jos where the corpse of late Mildred Bisalla has been deposited.

A trained nurse, late Mrs. Mildred Bisalla was the wife of late General Iliya Bisalla. She was Founder of Plateau Nigerian Horticultural Society and a devout Christian who held various positions within the Anglican Church.

COVID-19: Three Pastors Sue Kenyan Govt Over Church Activities

In what seem to be a war on faith, science and the government, three pastors have sued Kenyan government after church services stopped operating due to the Coronavirus lockdown put in place to halt the spread of the deadly disease.

Justice James Makau of The High Court revealed on Friday that three pastors, Don Mutugi Majau, Joan Miriti, and Alex Gichunge sued the Interior, Health and ICT Cabinet Secretaries, the Attorney-General and the Inspector-General of Police.

According to Nairobi News, Justice Makau set the hearing for April 16 and ordered the pastors to give copies of the case documents to the sued parties before the close of business on April 14.

In the suit, the pastors acknowledge measures put in place by the government to stop the spread but argue that as the pandemic worsens, Kenyans will look to churches for solace.

They are protesting the directive against social gatherings that saw closure of churches, saying it was reached without consultations with relevant stakeholders.

The religious men also say the state imposed the curfew and the restriction on gatherings without consulting the church.

They said that if consultations had taken place, the public would have been sufficiently educated on social distancing and proper hygiene, peace, and unity would have been promoted and food drives would have been held for the sake of the less fortunate.

Their lawyer, John Swaka said: “The petitioners (and) other believers are in no way approaching this court in efforts to spread the coronavirus. Their sole wish is to congregate whilst adhering to the directive issued,”

He added, “The church’s role in such times is to give hope amid the crisis not only in this country but also in the world at large. They humbly seek the intervention of the court since their rights and freedoms are being infringed.”

The pastors further note that judges, doctors, and journalists are risking their lives to serve Kenyans and that pastors should be added to the list of essential service providers in the fight against the deadly disease.

The religious leaders note that their services can go on with those in attendance wearing masks and gloves and using hand sanitisers.

They want churches allowed to conduct services with leaders compelled to ensure members adhere to guidelines for curbing the spread of the virus.

The alternative, they say, is for the government to allow the broadcasting of services on specific days.

The case will be mentioned on April 16.

COVID-19: NVRI Vom Is Now An Accredited Lab for COVID-19 Diagnostic Testing

The National Veterinary Research Institute (NVRI), VOM in Plateau state is now an accredited Laboratory for COVID-19 diagnostic testing, NVRI is one out of the 11 in the country presently accredited in carrying out diagnostics for the corona virus.

The history of the National Veterinary Research Institute (NVRI) Vom is synonymous with the history of animal production in Nigeria as one of the pioneer Veterinary Institutions in West Africa.

Development in the Colonial Period.

The scourge of Rinderpest was largely responsible for the establishment of veterinary services by the colonial powers in their colonies. The first panzootic of rinderpest in West Africa (1885-90) caused the death of 90% of the cattle population, and when it started to build up, the drought and famine of 1912-13 was followed by another wave of panzootic in 1913-14. The catastrophe precipitated in drastic reduction of cattle population from 9.01 million to 2.7 million. The Colony and Protectorate of Nigeria therefore decided to establish veterinary services as soon as possible, but exigencies of the First World War (1914-18) caused some delay.

A Veterinary Department with skeletal staff, under the leadership of Mr. F. R. Brandt, Chief Veterinary Officer, was established in 1913 with its headquarters at Zaria in the Northern Province.
The Veterinary Department actually took off from Foron District of Plateau State in 1921/1922 at Katra (for Cattle Ranch) in Simenti, after Mai-idontoro on Shen-Vat Road. Foron was hilly and unsuitable for pastoral growth required for cattle. The then Chief of Vwang (Vom) offered an alternative and attractive plain land at Vwang which is the present site of NVRI, Vom.
In 1924, the headquarters was relocated to Vom, in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State on Latitude 09° 44′ N and Longitude 08°45′ E with a physical feature of rocky granites of old volcanoes. The Institute occupies 20,719.5 hectares of land on which was erected infra-structures for laboratories, staff quarters and recreational facilities such as the Vom Club and Guest House established in the 1940s.

In February 1970, the Federal Military Government promulgated a Decree establishing the National Council for Science and Technology to oversee the affairs of the research institutes including the Federal Department of Veterinary Research. In accordance with the Agricultural Institutes Decree 35 of 1975, the department became autonomous and was renamed National Veterinary Research Institute with its own Governing Board.

Vaccine Development in NVRI
National Veterinary Research Institute produces 17 animal vaccines and 8 Ethno Veterinary products. The institute also have other products like Liquid Nitrogen, Kerosene egg incubators etc.
