Nigeria is not left out as States have come up with ways of curtailing the disease. Total case in Nigeria stands at 288 with 7 deaths recorded nationally.

The Plateau State Government has ordered total lockdown with effect from Thursday Midnight 9th April to Wednesday 15th April, 2020.

Our visit to Riyom Local Government Area met an excellent level of compliance with few arrest of defaulters.

The Council Boss, Hon. Mafeng Gwallson, his appointees and the Sector 6 Commander in the Area, Col. Gwani were on ground to enforce compliance.

A highly elated Hon. Gwallson expressed satisfaction with the level of compliance.

He said he is impressed and overwhelmed with the compliance by the citizens except for few cases of violators who were arrested and tried by the mobile Court in the Area.

He said the people are aware of the danger posed by COVID-19 globally and are adhering to the preventing measures and government directives aimed at stemming the spread of the virus.

He said those arrested are being tried, fined and asked to return to where they are coming from or made to undertake community service if they are unable to pay.

He expressed optimism that full compliance will be recorded as defaulters are being punished to serve as deterrent to others who may want to violate the lockdown order imposed in the State which he said is in the best interest of public health.

Hon. Mafeng said though COVID-19 pandemic has adversely affected socio-economic activities, the hardship being faced by the people is temporal.

He frowned at alternative routes being created to bypass and circumvent checkpoints as well as other illegal activities leading to the contravention of the lockdown directive.

Hon. Gwallson said Riyom LGA being the gateway to Plateau State from other geopolitical zones to Plateau State and most Northern States will enforce full compliance, assuring that no violator will go Scot-free.

He said measures have also been put in place to ensure that perishable farm produces are attended to in order to avoid losses by the Locals.

He said PPE and other preventive items have been distributed across the Local Government Area and urged the people to adhere to all preventive measures and government directives.

Hon. Pam Nyango the Supervisory Councillor for Special Duties Riyom LGC and Hon. Gyang Mwadkwon the Council representing Kwogo Ward in their separate remarks said the Local Government is leaving no stone unturned to ensure that Riyom LGA is coronavirus-free. The Management Committee Chairman of Barkin Ladi LGC, Hon. Ezekiel Mandyau esq, has lauded the level of compliance to the lockdown order imposed by the State Government.

Barr. Mandyau said though the Area recorded 12 defaulters who were tried and penalized accordingly, the compliance index is commendable.

He said the defaulters numbering 12 were coming from other Local Government Areas and States but with the effort of the Taskforce in the Area were arrested and tried by the mobile court in the locality.

He said the Area achieved remarkable compliance because Traditional Leaders, religious leaders and Leaders of groups were incorporated into the Council COVID-19 Taskforce which made information dissemination to the people easier and more effective.

He assured that the Council will not rest until full compliance is achieved in days ahead as the mobile court in the Area is ensuring that violators of the lockdown order are being penalized to serve as deterrent to others.

He called on the people to continue to be law abiding, observe the preventive measures and all government directives aimed at curbing COVID-19.

He said measures are in place to ensure that farmers of perishable commercial farm produce do not suffer losses.

He said a suspected case of someone who came in from Abuja with symptoms was reported in the Area, but upon medical examination the person was diagnosed of Tuberculosis though still in isolation to fulfil the 14 days directed by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control.

Issue of indiscriminate grazing on farmland in Foron District by Herdsmen was reported to the Divisional Police Officer who said actions will be taken to ensure the perpetuators will be penalized for violating the lockdown order.

The Local Government Hqtrs, Gwol, Kassa District and Heipang were seen complying fully to the lockdown order at appreciable level.

NORTHERN GOVERNORS EASTER GOOD WILL GREETINGS

Chairman of the Northern Governors Forum and Governor of Plateau State Simon Bako Lalong has congratulated Christians as they mark another Easter.

Governor Lalong in a message on behalf of the Forum described Easter as a special event that marks the salvation of mankind through the suffering of Jesus and His crucifixion to redeem humanity.

Lalong said “this year’s Easter provides us a special opportunity to connect with the Lord Jesus Christ and seek his face as we contain the Corona Virus pandemic which is ravaging the world. The unusual interruption in the celebration of Easter this year which has seen many people confined to their homes and many others battling for survival, calls for more prayers and repentance”.

Despite this difficult period, the Northern Governors Forum Chairman called on Christians to use the period and reflect on the virtues of sacrifice, love, tolerance and respect for sanctity of life which Jesus Christ demonstrated through his death and resurrection.

Governor Simon Lalong also appealed to citizens to support the Federal Government as well as Governments of the various States as they make difficult decisions that may not be popular in an attempt to protect the lives of people.

EASTER MESSAGE FROM REP. SIMON MWADKWON, PH.D MEMBER REPRESENTING BARKIN LADI/RIYOM FEDERAL CONSTITIENCY

One of the very last words uttered by Jesus Christ on the cross, “It is finished” in John 19:30, (which means paid in full) is one of the most important and poignant. Jesus’ crucifixion signifies that death has been put to dead. Salvation has come to the world

On behalf of my family and good people of Barkin Ladi/Riyom Federal Constituency, I write to felicitate with Christians across the World on the occasion of Easter celebration commemorating the crucifixion and and most importantly resurrection of Christ which is the central truth of the Christian faith. The importance of the resurrection of Jesus Christ cannot be overemphasized. Without the resurrection there is no Christianity.

This period is one of sober reflection appreciating and honoring God for His redemptive work and love towards mankind.

Despite the global coronavirus pandemic, may our lives be true reflection of Jesus Christ who came and died for mankind.

This is wishing us a hitch free celebration in love and total obedience to God and adherence to the preventive measures and directives put in place to stem the tide of COVID-19.

Stay safe, avoid spread of COVID-19 and save lives.

Director, Media & Publicity to Rep. Simon Mwadkwon, Ph.D
