No evidence face shield alone can provide primary protection’ – NCDC

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) says there is no evidence that face shields alone can provide primary respiratory protection against coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

The Director-General of NCDC, Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu, made the remark in an interview on Wednesday, June 24, in Abuja; while reacting to the increasing use of face shields by members of the public.

He said, “there is strong evidence that wearing a face mask protects both healthcare workers and the public against COVID-19 infection and should continue to be used.”

Prior to this, the Federal Government on April 27, 2020, through Mr Boss Mustapha; the Chairman of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, announced the compulsory use of face mask or covering in public spaces.

Since then, Nigerians adopted the use of face masks in public settings and some have now started wearing face shields.

However, the NCDC boss said “there is evidence that a face shield might reduce exposure in healthcare workers but they are not meant to function alone as primary respiratory protection.

“In addition, there is limited to no evidence on the effectiveness of face shields for community use by members of the public.

“Face shields are most important in healthcare settings to protect healthcare workers during processes such as intubation, the process of inserting a tube; called an Endotracheal Tube (ET), through the mouth and then into the airway.

“We do not have evidence that using face shields outside healthcare settings can protect members of the community.

“Therefore, this is a practice that should not be promoted; until we have sufficient evidence that they offer protection when used by members of the public,” he explained.

This led to the recommendation to the general public to wear cloth masks in public.

The Chairman of the PTF, Boss Mustapha, had urged Nigerian tailors to start mass-producing face masks using the country’s local fabrics.

He said it was time for Nigerian tailors to start producing locally-made face masks with “our fabric”, adding that with such move, the risk of infecting others would be reduced.

COVID-19: History as FUT Minna Microbiology Dept unveils sterilized face-masks

History was made today Wednesday, June 24, 2020; as the Department of Microbiology of the Federal University of Technology (FUT), Minna; set a new pace in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic with the production of a sterilized brand of face-masks; a first of its kind in Nigeria.

Equally important, 100 units of the special face-masks were also donated to the Vice-Chancellor of the University; Prof. Abdullahi Bala, fsssn.

The brief presentation ceremony took place at the Senate Chamber, Main Campus of FUT Minna.

Speaking before presenting the items to the Vice-Chancellor, the Head of department, Microbiology; Dr. Nasiru Usman Adabara said the department has a role to play in the prevention and control of micro-organisms; which include COVID-19. He stated that the donation of the face-masks was in furtherance of the department’s community service function to the University; as well as the nation at large through the conduct of novel research to address societal problems.

Dr. Adabara disclosed that the department was motivated to undertake the production of the face-masks in order to appreciate the University Management for their support; as well as to thank staff who have been working tirelessly since the outbreak of COVID-19 to keep the University moving.

The Head of Department stated that the face-masks were produced locally in the department with value addition; through the development of a fumigation chamber to sterilize the face-masks to make it safer for usage; adding that the department has the capacity to embark on mass production of the face-masks for commercial purposes.

Further, he commended all the staff of the department for being part of the novel production of the face-masks.

Responding, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Bala expressed appreciation to the department for writing the University’s name in gold; for yet another good reason by adding an expert touch to the production of face-masks. He affirmed this as the direction that FUT-Minna should follow as a leading university of science and technology in Nigeria.

While assuring the department of the University Management’s support, the VC said the donation of the face-masks is gratifying; especially because it has been treated and due to the fact that it is coming from a renowned university; known for excellence in conducting cutting-edge research.

Prof. Bala stated that any product of the university should have value addition in terms of excellence and expertise; which would naturally distinguish it from the ones being produced elsewhere. In addition, the Vice-Chancellor disclosed that the University is presently working on the production of Hi-Tech hand washing machines; which would further improve upon the locally fabricated ones in the market.

Prof. Bala, who is also the Chairman of the Association of West African Universities (AWAU); assured the department that the face-masks would be distributed to staff and judiciously utilised. Indeed, this, he noted, is essential in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

The VC further stated that the University would soon organize an exhibition for the University’s researchers to showcase all COVID-19 related inventions for members of the public.

The high point of the event was the presentation of the face-masks to the Vice-Chancellor. Other dignitaries present at the event were members of the University Management; some staff from the department of Microbiology and the Director, University Health Services, Dr. Othman Adegoke.

The Act of Saving And The Beauty It Beholds After The Sacrifice

The habit of saving is itself an education; it fosters every virtue, self denial, cultivates the sense of order, trains the forethought, and in so doing broaden the mind” Saving is not a new practice in short it has existed as long as man. Since the beginning of time men have always stored extra food, money or clothes for the rainy days. But in this article we will look at savings from the monetary aspect.

How then do we define savings? Since we will be talking about monetary savings, I will like to limit the definition to cash and solid funds. Savings therefore can be seen as a reserved amount of money kept and regularly added on to aid in solving unforeseen situations or aid in financing future dealings and projects. Savings entails sacrifice and maybe that is why it brings rewards. Those that save always have. If tomorrow you lose your job or business you know you can survive until the situation improves or you start another business. However, those that do not save… You are going to learn about this as you continue reading.

It is quite unfortunate how some people complain about being financially unstable, yet they use their last savings to acquire meaningless material things. As Nigerians, there are certain factors that make people not to save and these factors are born out of poor financial attitudes and characters. Some of which are explained below:

Saving what is left after spending: Most Nigerians save what is left after they have finished their shopping, grocery buying and luxury getting. This attitude encourages little or no saving at all. It is only proper as a principle of saving to spend what is left after saving and not the other way round. Discipline yourself and live strictly on a budget if you want to save diligently.

Always saying yes to lending money: We are humans and are emotionally moved by pity to help people who come begging for monetary help. That in itself is not bad but to be able to save diligently and consistently, you must place a limit to the monetary help you offer to people. You may be wondering what you are saving for if you cannot be a help to people around you. Look at it from this perspective; you will be able to help the people around you better when you have gathered enough and have gotten a way to get it multiplied. To save, you have to make decisions that will hurt you and the people around you. Remember the popular quote that states “no pain no gain”

Spending your income and salary before it even gets to you: Most Nigerians make a full salary spending budget even before they are paid and thus when they eventually get paid they use the money to settle debts or pay for already budgeted items which most of the times are totally useless and serves only momentary pleasures. These among others are the attitude behind the poor saving character in Nigeria. Others include Lack of contentment thereby spending more to get less, fake living and excess debt.

After seeing the attitudes that dampens saving spirit what then are the do’s to maintain a consistent and diligent saving practice?

The first and most important thing to do is to eliminate your debts: When you are trying to save money but still owe a large debt burden, you need to start by paying off your debts. Add up your debt and the interest you pay on the debt each month when you do the math you discover that the money you pay on the interest each month if it were saved it would have amounted to a lot of cash.

Set your goals: Intuitively we all will agree that saving is good but most of us do not tie our savings to big goals. If you don’t set goals to achieve with your savings, you will continue to be a consumer of every product in the market. Every restaurant, clothing, accessories and food store out there is trying to have a slice of your pocket to fulfill their own dreams.

Become a good negotiator: No skillin the world will save you money as the power of negotiation. Most atimes we call it pricing. Learning this skill in the economical world saves you more cash and in the long run make you spend less buying more.

Consider opening a fixed deposit account: Most Nigerians are operating a savings account and this account has been given a free access to the money stored therein and by so doing encourages much more spending rather than saving. Therefore if you want to be a consistent and a disciplined fund saver, you are advised to open a fixed deposit account so as to restrict easy access to your money and in addition give you a higher interest rate than the basic savings or transactional account.

It will take us a long while to exhaust the right attitudes to adopt for efficient saving but basically the ones enlisted above are the most essential of them all. Other attitudes to adopt for efficient saving includes: recording your expenses so as to curtail unnecessary spending, choose something to save for don’t save blindly and importantly buy your goods and needful items in bulk as this will help you potentially save money on your essential needs every month.

Let us then take a ride into the beautiful world that saving creates. The practice of saving has saved a lot of people embarrassment and made a lot of people optimistic about the future when it comes to matters relating to funds. Saving provides a financial “backstop” for life uncertainties and thereby creating self reliance. Let us then look at the blessings associated with saving:

Gives financial freedom: Accumulated savings gives you peace of mind and helps one to enjoy financial freedom because you will become a reservoir of yourself knowing that there is a buffer that can be used if you need funds urgently unlike those that do not save they become stuck financially when any unexpected event arises.

Saving definitely serves as a cushion against lost of job or in a situation where there is a halt in economic activities: Taking as illustration the pandemic the world is going through, many workers have lost their jobs and some workers losing their place in the labor market. Saving therefore serves as a great cushion of comfort to those who have been wise to save.

Parents and guardians are encouraged to teach their children from a very tender age the life changing practice of saving by so doing, it will foster self reliance and independence in teenagers and by the time they become fully grown adults, they will be consistent in saving. Matt Becker penned “saving gives you an opportunity to live your life on your own terms”.

What then happens when you choose not to save money? Choosing not to save money is a dangerous road full of financial regrettable consequences some of which are:

You become a slave to debt: When you refuse to save, you will always borrow to solve unexpected events when they arise and by so doing drowning in debt instead of planning for the future. At a point people will get tired of always lending you money and then you are back to the root of pain and depression.

You need to keep working till you die: Failure to save drafts your life as a worker for life to survive. You will not be able to stop working because you have no funds to survive on when you retire or leave work in your old age. Make a life changing decision to start saving today so your future self will thank the sacrifices you made now.

You reach retirement age with no reasonable money in the bank: When you fail to save, you retire from a well paid job with little or no money to sustain you even a year not to mention through your remaining life a retiree.  This therefore leaves you stranded and still working small jobs to survive even during your retirement period.

Unprepared for financial emergencies and major life events: Financial emergencies are a fact of life. One moment you think everything is great and then, boom, your car breaks down or someone falls ill. When you don’t make it a point of duty to save, you are setting yourself for a rough financial regret.

The ugly fact remains that once you refuse to safe, you become financially dependent, always depending on someone to lend you help to solve your financial problems. Borrowing money to solve your problems does not actually solve them but puts you in a position where you always borrow to solve your monetary issues thereby leaving you swimming in circles in the pool of debt. The reality is that saving is very hard. The art is not making money but in keeping it. Saving is an essential part of planning a prosperous future. Prioritize saving before spending. Never buy what you don’t need because it is cheap it will cost you more than you know. Remember that rich people stay rich by living like they are broke and broke people stay broke by living like they are rich.

Do the math and see how much even a little amount of money will sum up to when you save:

N100 daily=N36,000           N1,500 daily=N549,000

N200 daily=N73,200           N2,000 daily=N732,000

N300 daily=N109,800         N2,500 daily=N915,000

N500 daily=N183,000       N3,000 daily=N1,095,000

N1000 daily=N366,000

Close with this: Until you are in the habit of it, saving money is easier said than done. But as you begin to grow in your habit of saving, you will find an improvement in your overall self-discipline. Its not how much you make each month that matters it is how much you save along with the flexibility and time outside work that you have.

Save diligently today and spend lavishly in the future.

Court bars Edo Governor from contesting PDP primary (See CTC)

A Federal High Court in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, has barred incumbent governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki from contesting the governorship primary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

1st News can report that the order was issued on Monday, June 22, 2020 in a suit FHC/PH/CS/69/2020.

Equally important, the order of interim injunction granted by Justice E.A Obile; was filed by Hon. Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama, who is also contesting the PDP primary for the Edo State gubernatorial election.

A Certified True Copy (CTC) of the court order sighted by 1st News reveals that Hon. Ogbeide-Ihama had prayed the court to bar Obaseki from contesting the primary election on the grounds that the Edo Governor did not purchase the nomination form for the election. Also, he had held that Obaseki did not undergo screening within the time frame stipulated in the timetable by the PDP.

Furthermore, the plaintiff had sought an order of the court restraining the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC); from recognising Obaseki as a candidate of the PDP in the primary election.

Joined in the suit was the Chairman of the PDP, Prince Uche Secondus, Emmanuel Ogidi, Hon. Kingsley Chinda; Chief Bodekeme Boyleyefa, Sen. James Manager, Hon. Ajibola Muraina, the PDP, Obaseki and INEC.

Consequently, Justice Obile who heard the motion ex-parte ordered that the status quo be maintained. This is pending the accelerated hearing of the motion on notice on Wednesday, June 24, 2020.

1st News had reported that Obaseki, who has been embroiled in a bitter feud with estranged godfather; Adams Oshiomhole, had announced his exit from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on Tuesday, June 16, 2020. His decision came a few minutes after a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa.

Subsequently, he had defected to the PDP on Friday, June 19, 2020.

Thereafter, he had picked up his membership card, with the party granting him and Deputy Governor; Phillip Shuaibu a waiver to contest the party primary for the governorship election.

Meanwhile, the suit may jeopardize Obaseki’s chances of contesting the PDP primary; especially if he fails in setting aside the order.

1st News reports that the PDP primary for the governorship election has been rescheduled for Thursday, June 25.

Please see Certified True Copy of the court order below.

Nigerians bid to sue oil company in UK over pollution

Thousands of Nigerians are asking British judges to give them permission to sue Royal Dutch Shell Plc in London; over environmental damage caused by oil spills 3,000 miles away in Africa.

Lawyers for residents of the crude-rich Niger Delta believe a landmark U.K. Supreme Court ruling last year against a London-based miner should set a precedent. Shell has blocked the suit twice from entering British courts; and says the litigation should be heard in the West African country.

Oil companies are hurting from squeezed profits as the coronavirus pandemic has destroyed demand and pushed prices lower. Adding to its worries, Shell might also face legal battles in the U.K., as well; those already underway in the Netherlands, that could expose the firm to higher damages for causing pollution in the developing world.

An April 2019 decision that allowed a group of Zambians to proceed to trial against Vedanta Resources Plc for pollution; caused by a copper-mining unit clarifies the law around a company’s duty of care to those affected by operations of a subsidiary.

Robert Meade, an attorney at Bracewell LLP who specializes in oil and gas clarified this.

Still, “it does not mean that a parent company might be liable for its subsidiaries’ actions or inaction,” he said.

Daniel Leader, a partner at Leigh Day representing the Nigerian claimants, said the English courts should hold the oil major to account in English courts “for the devastating damage Shell has caused to their communities over many years.”

Nigeria is Africa’s largest oil producer; and also depends on crude for about half of government revenue and 90% of export earnings. However, thousands of spills over decades have destroyed the livelihoods of fishing and farming communities in the southeast of the country; including more than 40,000 people from the Bille and Ogale communities who are trying to force Shell to pay compensation and clean up.

Debt forgiveness will hurt, not help Africa – Banks Warn

Scrapping the debt of heavily indebted African nations will only come back to haunt them, according to two of the continent’s largest banks.

Ade Ayeyemi, chief executive officer of Lome, Togo-based Ecobank Transnational Inc. made his view clear on the matter. He said, “Forgiveness is not helpful because your debt is somebody’s else’s savings.

“When you go to the market to borrow money, the market is looking at your current and past behavior.”

China last week pledged to cancel some interest-free government loans for African nations; and offered to rework commercial obligations as the world’s poorest continent grapples with how to handle the coronavirus pandemic. The vow means debt suspension by the Group of 20; leading economies is gaining traction for all types of official funding; after an initial focus on Paris Club agreements.

“To a great extent, forgiveness is a form of default; and, essentially then, what it does is that it distorts markets; so it is one area that we should all be conscious of the unintended consequences.” James Mwangi, CEO Nairobi-based Equity Group Holdings, Kenya’s largest bank by market value, said this. “Essentially it talks about the creditworthiness of a country.”

The G-20 in April agreed to provide the relief to help free up funds for more than 70 poor nations to deal with the pandemic; but the process has been slow, with many private creditors on the sidelines.

While a lockdown to contain the pandemic has impeded output and sales of most companies in the continent; it is boosting digital payments and helping governments achieve their goals of financial inclusion, said Ayeyemi, whose lender has operations in 33 countries across the continent. Ecobank – not unlike most other banks – is seeing 95% of transactions done on digital platforms since the pandemic started; compared with 90% previously.

The virus “has become the greatest accelerator of the adoption of digital,” he said.
