Onyeama: Fear grips Buhari, Presidency over Foreign Affairs’ Minister COVID-19 status

There are worries in the Presidency over the health of Foreign Affairs Minister, Geoffrey Onyeama.

1st News had reported on Sunday that Onyeama tested positive for COVID-19.

Sources within the Presidency revealed that the development is a source of concern to President Muhammadu Buhari. The President had lost his erstwhile Chief of Staff, Abba Kyari to COVID-19; a development that greatly saddened him.

Consequently, the news that Onyeama has also tested positive has caused him great worry.

Specifically, Presidency sources say Buhari has a great working relationship with Onyeama and sees him as an ally. Incidentally, the late Kyari and Onyeama were very close friends as well.

Indeed, Buhari has thus gone into supplications to God on his behalf.

4wardwego reports that the President on Sunday prayed for his quick recovery from the rampaging pandemic. This was disclosed in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity; Malam Garba Shehu, in Abuja. The president described the minister as a strong pillar of his administration.

Onyeama and Buhari

Further, he commended him for working tirelessly to stem the spread of the pandemic in the country; as a member of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19.

Also, Buhari lauded Onyeama for ensuring the safety of Nigerians abroad.

“The country is eternally grateful to Geoffrey Onyeama for his diligence in attracting international support for Nigeria to defeat the Coronavirus pandemic, and boost the economy. I wish him speedy recovery,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Minister, who disclosed his positive status via a tweet on his verified Twitter handle, had sounded upbeat. Further, he had revealed that he was heading for isolation and praying for the best.

“Did my fourth COVID-19 test yesterday at the first sign of a throat irritation and unfortunately, this time, it came back positive.

“That is life! Win some, loose some. Heading for isolation in a health facility and praying for the best.”

COVID-19: Madagascar’s herbal drink cannot cure pandemic, research reveals

“Analysis does not show any proof that Covid-Organics can cure COVID-19,” says  official

Madagascar’s coronavirus herbal concoction is not as potent as claimed to cure the COVID-19 pandemic, said Nigeria’s state-run pharmaceutical research institute.

In a reported presented to the Health Ministry on Sunday, July 19, the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Research and Development (NIPRD) said safety studies show that Covid-Organics (CVO) do not alter the normal physiology of the animals.

In April, Madagascar’s President Andry Rajoelina officially launched the CVO — an organic herbal concoction — claiming that it can prevent and cure patients of the novel coronavirus.

Obi Adigwe, NIPRD’s director general, told reporters that Madagascar officials were hiding CVO analysis.

“They are hiding a lot of things and I think it is possible that they know that they don’t have strong science backing up their claim. But our own analysis does not show any proof that it can cure COVID-19,” he said.

Adigwe said the analysis they presented in the report is more detailed than what they received from Madagascar.

“CVO reduced cough frequency with the maximum dose tested, producing an effect equivalent to that produced by the centrally acting cough-suppressant, dihydrocodeine,” he added.

Madagascar’s president had urged citizens to protect themselves from the novel coronavirus by drinking CVO.

However, the World Health Organization (WHO) warned against the use of CVO without medical supervision and cautioned against self-medication.

The Indian Ocean island of Madagascar has also donated CVO to several African countries.

Earlier this month, Madagascar authorities re-imposed a total lockdown in the Analamanga region due to the rise in COVID-19 cases. It has also opened new coronavirus treatment centers.

JAMB announces August 21 as commencement date for 2020/21 academic admissions

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) on Sunday, July 19, approved August 21 for tertiary institutions to commence first and second choice admission for the 2020/2021 session.

This was contained in the 2020 admission guidelines signed by the Registrar of JAMB, Is-haq Oloyede.

The board warned institutions not to bypass the Central Admission Processing System, through which admissions must be conducted.

“The 1st and 2nd Choices Admission-Exercise be conducted for all institutions from 21st August 2020 to a later date that would be determined by the Federal Ministry of Education and communicated to all the institutions.

“All applications for admissions to First Degree, National Diploma, National Innovation Diploma and the Nigeria Certificate in Education into Full Time, Distance Learning, Part-Time, Outreach, Sandwich, etc, must be processed ONLY through the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB),” the statement read in part.

Last month, JAMB approved 160 and above as 2020 national minimum cut-off mark for admission into public universities. he board also approved 140 as minimum UTME score for admission into private universities.

Meanwhile, the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA) says full deregulation of the downstream oil and gas sector will help force down price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) also known as petrol.

The agency made this known in a statement signed by its Executive Secretary, Mr Saidu Abdulkadir in Abuja, on Sunday, July 19.

1st News had reported that the PPPRA on July 1, announced a pump price band of N140.80k and N143.80k per liter for PMS.

This was an increase by N20.30 from the June price of N121.50 per litre.

He attributed the rise in the pump price of the commodity to the cost of petroleum products in the international market and the cost of acquiring foreign exchange (FOREX).

AbdulKadir explained that the newly-adopted market-based pricing system was in view of the need to promote the growth of the Nigerian petroleum industry and the economy in general.

He said that oil marketing companies had resumed fuel importation; and had also directly imported a total of 536,000 metric tonnes of PMS into the country.

According to him, additional investment in local refining, will engender competition; and force down prices of products.

PMB warns ministers, others against disrespecting NASS

President Muhammadu Buhari has warned ministers and chief executive officers of government agencies to desist from disrespecting members of the National Assembly (NASS).

4wardwego reports that this was disclosed by Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu.

Specifically, Shehu made this known in a statement issued to the media on Thursday. He disclosed that Buhari gave the warning at a session with leaders of the National Assembly in Abuja. The president had met behind closed doors with the Senate President, Sen. Ahmed Lawan; as well as the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr Femi Gbajabiamila, at the State House.

The presidential aide said the meeting, which lasted for almost an hour, centered on a range of key national issues.

He disclosed that the meeting deliberated on the role of the legislature in fostering national goals; while improving the lives of the people.

‘‘In the course of their conversation, recent events at the National Assembly were highlighted…The president re-emphasised his utmost respect for the National Assembly.”

Shehu quoted Buhari to have warned against disrespect to the NASS by any member of the executive arm; noting that such action would not be accepted.

‘‘Ministers and all heads of departments and agencies should at all times conduct themselves in ways that will not undermine the National Assembly as an institution, its leadership and members.’’

Further, the statement noted that Buhari and the leaders of the National Assembly agreed on a few points. Both parties recognised and acknowledged that the executive and legislative arms of government are essential partners; especially in the fulfillment of their mutually aligned goal of improving the lives of the Nigerian people.

4wardwego reports that the Minister of State for Labour/Employment had been involved in some public disagreements with the NASS.

Reps Committee accuses Labour Ministry of aiding human trafficking

The House of Reps Committee on Diaspora has accused the Federal Ministry of Labour of aiding human trafficking.

The Chairman of the Committee, Rep. Tolulope Akande-Sadipe (APC-Oyo) made this known at a public hearing on Thursday in Abuja.

She said that the ministry had also continued to frustrate the frantic effort of the National Assembly to combat the crime.

“The house committee on diaspora in a bid to find a workable solution in tackling the menace of trafficking and the dehumanising condition of Nigerians abroad by some local and international syndicates have been having a series of interagency meetings with stakeholders.

”But regrettably the Ministry of Labour that is at the centre of the whole controversy has intentionally refused to honour the committee invitation for five consecutive meetings.

“We have invited five time times today being the 5th and he was again represented by a Permanent Secretary who claims he is new; and does not understand the workings and what transpired prior to his engagement.

“This is in spite of having signed a recruiters licence earlier this year; where there was a moratorium placed on such licenses since 2017.

“It appears that there is clear incompetence or complicity within the ministry; that has led this compromise trafficking and abuse of Nigeria citizen,” she said.

The Reps chairman said that investigation showed that licences were issued after the moratorium that allowed agents traffic our girls.

She said agents were allowed to take Nigerians to Lebanon a country that doesn’t have a labour pact with Nigeria.

According to her, licenses were also issued to companies who have not complied with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) and Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) requirements.

The Reps said that girls were allowed to be taken out by agents without the mandatory counselling and orientation.

“The Ministry of Labour has refused to submit the documentation requested; where documentation was provided by the labour the investigation revealed that there were inconsistencies in the report from labour; in comparison with FIRS, CAC NAPTIP, Ministry of Justice and National Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF).

“Even where labour made a report submission; their submission was in conflict with the documentation backing it up also submitted by them,” she said.

Akande-Sadipe expressed sadness that Nigeria had to witness such a great disregard for the life of a Nigerian citizen by encouraging their trafficking.

The chairman promised that the parliament will take the matter up at plenary.

Magu opens up on allegations of financial impropriety involving Osinbajo, Falana

The suspended acting chairman, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu, on Thursday, July 16, refuted allegations that he gave N4 billion to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

Magu lampooned the claims as an attempt to tarnish the image of the Vice President.

The suspended EFCC boss, who was freed from detention on Wednesday, equally denied giving the sum of N28 million to Femi Falana, a human rights lawyer.

Magu made this revelation via a petition signed by his lawyer, Wahab Kunle Shittu, and addressed to the Chairman of the Presidential Investigations Panel, Justice Isa Ayo Salami.

“Our client strongly denies this falsehood against the respected Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Our client has never given the sum of N4 billion or any sum at all to Prof. Yemi Osinbajo SAN, GCON, Vice President of Federal Republic of Nigeria as wrongly reported.”

“This allegation is complete falsehood designed to tarnish the hard-earned reputation of the Vice President.

“This allegation is a complete fabrication. Our client never gave N28 million or any amount to Mr. Femi Falana SAN as maliciously reported. Our client also denies any link with a Kaduna-based Bureau De Change Operator as alleged,” the petition reads.

Meanwhile, the former governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose on Thursday, July 16, mocked a Human Rights lawyer, Femi Falana, on what to do over reports he got N28 million from the suspended acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu.

Fayose blasted Falana telling him to quit making “empty threats” and proceed to court to prove his innocence.

He further said that the likes of Falana should “stop carrying on as if they are saints and untouchables.”

A recent media report had claimed that the presidential probe panel investigating Magu for alleged financial malfeasance reportedly revealed that he gave Falana N28 million.

However, Falana, via a letter signed by his lawyer, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika, denied the claim.

But in a tweet on his Twitter handle, @GovAyoFayose, Fayose asked the lawyer to drop the threats and head straight to court to clear his name.

Fayose wrote, “My counsel to Falana is that he should stop making empty threats and go to court.

“If there is nothing to hide, why is Femi Falana threatening instead of simply going to court? Isn’t this alleged link to Magu another opportunity for him to go to court and clear his name?

“Methinks his likes should stop carrying on as if they are saints and untouchables.”
