NAF to get additional fighter aircraft in 2021

The Chief of Air Staff Air, Air Marshal Sadiq Abubakar, says the Nigeria Air Force (NAF) will receive a new A-29 Super Tucano fighter aircraft in 2021 to strengthen defence.

Abubakar said this during the inauguration of officers’ accommodation and a 1.3-kilometre road at NAF Base Kainji, Niger.

“Some time ago, I was here to commission one of the three Alpha Jet Aircraft programmed for Periodic Depot Maintenance and the rehabilitated 2.8-kilometre road infrastructure in this base.

“I am highly delighted to be here again today for the commissioning of another set of projects. This is in fulfilment of my earlier promise that additional projects would be undertaken to enhance your competence,” he said.

Further, he explained that the provision of additional infrastructure at the base was to appreciate the effort and contribution of the personnel of 407 Air Combat Training Group in projecting Air Power across the country.

“I thought it necessary that they have a befitting environment to further motivate them towards better output in their endeavour.

“The projects being commissioned today are part of our efforts towards ensuring a befitting environment; as well as better living conditions in Kainji base.

“These accommodations among others which were earlier commissioned and some ongoing ones will ensure that personnel of the unit have an environment conducive to retire to on completion of the day’s work. Additionally, the base is being positioned to receive and efficiently support the A-29 Super Tucano aircraft; which is expected to arrive in the country towards the end of the second quarter of 2021.’’

He noted that the sacrifices being made by NAF personnel must be supported by all Nigerians; adding that this is essential for them to do more for the nation. Also, he urged the personnel to continue to exhibit high level of discipline and professionalism.

“You must strive to meet the expectations of the country at this time of heightened security challenges; by protecting the citizenry and our critical assets as well as bringing succour to the despaired.’’

Kwankwaso reveals true reason behind fallout between Ganduje, Sanusi

Former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, on Wednesday, December 23, revealed that the reason why Governor Abdullahi Ganduje removed Muhammad Sanusi II as Emir of Kano had nothing to do with ex-President Goodluck Jonathan.

This was contained in a statement issued by Kwankwaso via his Principal Private Secretary, Muhammad Inuwa Ali.

According to the former Governor, Sanusi was dethroned by Ganduje because of the latter’s inferiority complex and not because of Jonathan.

The former governor added that Ganduje allegedly “harbours a pathological hatred for the Kano Traditional Institution”.

Kwankwaso said, “We know that Ganduje always feels diminished and inferior in the presence of the Emir, and we know that Gov Ganduje harbours a pathological hatred for the Kano Traditional Institution; that was why he had to dethrone him.

“We also know that Ganduje was madly obsessed with reversing everything that Senator Kwankwaso did in the state. And we are aware, for these reasons, Governor Ganduje was set, ab initio, to destroy the Kano Emirate. And Emir Sanusi II was marked to be the first victim.

“Let me also put on record that Emir Sanusi II was abducted and illegally dethroned by Governor Ganduje and his cohorts because of the Emir’s progressive ideas on various issues that affect the people of the state.

“Everyone knows that Ganduje’s desperation to obtain the $1.8 billion loan and the former Emir’s criticism of the loan was what fuelled the illegal removal of Emir Sanusi II; it had nothing to do with former President Jonathan.

“It is common knowledge that the Emir was too progressive for Governor Ganduje’s liking and that was exactly why after his illegal removal and the dismemberment of the Kano Emirate Council, he appointed Emirs that would not question his ill-advised decisions even if they are against the interest of the state and its people.”

Ngige reveals ASUU to end nationwide strike by Jan 15

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, on Tuesday, December 22, stated that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) would suspend its prolong strike before January 15.

4wardwego had reported that Ngige expressed similar optimism on the suspension of the strike in a chat with journalists at the weekend.

This came as a response to the part-payment of the university lecturers’ salary arrears by the government.

Ngige, who spoke at the meeting with ASUU in Abuja, added that the federal government has not received a letter from the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) who threatened to embark on protests if the two parties failed to resolve their dispute before the end of the year.

He said: “The government would disappoint all those wishing for the protests as all the matters in dispute must have been resolved by January 15.

“Those who want to use the #EndASUU protest to destroy public and private property or lecturers’ homes will be disappointed.

“I am optimistic that the meeting will produce the final result that will make everybody happy.

“We are hopeful that ASUU will then take the report of what we achieved today to their members. We allow social dialogue in line with International Labour Organisation (ILO) conventions for all employers and employees, to guide this meeting.”

In his response, the ASUU President, Prof Biodun Ogunyemi sympathised with the students over the prolonged strike.

He said no amount of sacrifice would be too much to get the dispute resolved as long as the government remained consistent in its commitments.

He, however, insisted that only the National Executive Committee of ASUU could announce the suspension of the strike.

Meanwhile, the Presidency, on Tuesday, December 22, stated that the Federal Government may close the borders which were opened recently again if there is any “trouble”.

This was disclosed by the Senior Special Assistant to the Presidency on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu; while speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme.

Shehu stated that the FG is studying activities at four of the nation’s land borders which were reopened last week.

The Presidency aide further bemoaned that Nigeria’s neighbours had not cooperated with the country to curtail the influx of bandits; insurgents and small weapons fueling insecurity in Nigeria.

He said, “This is why the president considered the closure of the land borders for much of this time; until they were reopened a week or so ago.

“This country has been talking to our neighbours; asking them that they cooperate with us in order to stop this influx of bandits; weapons; drugs; and trafficking of Nigerian women; but the cooperation has not measured up to the expectation of the president.

“This is why he was forced by the necessity of the situation to shut down the borders,” Shehu added.

Lai Mohammed explains FG’s decision not to slam travel ban on UK over COVID-19

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed has stated that the Federal Government is yet to impose a travel ban; particularly to and from the UK, over the mutated strain of COVID-19.

The government said it will require the concurrence of neighbouring countries for the ban to be effective.

Lai Mohammed, disclosed this when he featured on a Radio Nigeria programme, “Politics Nationwide’’ on Tuesday, December 22, in Abuja.

During the programme, Lai Mohammed said, ”although the government is concerned over the importation of the COVID-19 new strain; it did not want to take a hasty decision”.

He said the Presidential Committee on COVID-19 deliberated on the issue at its meeting on Monday; and decided to watch the development for the time being.

He said they are working with West African Health Organisations and other neighbouring countries; particularly, the Benin Republic, Togo and Ghana.

“We did not want to take a hasty decision to ban flight from the UK into Nigeria only to find out our people are going through Cotonou, Lome or Accra to come into the country.

“What the Airlines will do is to transfer Nigerian passengers to these routes; and they will enter the country through the land borders.

“This will lead to hardship to Nigerians because if you transfer your economy to other countries you lose a lot of money.

“However, if we get the concurrence of these other countries; we will not hesitate to do the needful.

“We are consulting and being very careful in order to make a proper decision,’’ he said.

It would be recalled that the minister gave the hint on Monday that the Federal Government might impose a travel ban; to and from certain parts of the world into the country.

Lai Mohammed, a member of PTF, had said at a Special NAN Forum that the government was concerned about the new strain of COVID-19, manifesting itself in the UK that is the mutated strain.

“It is difficult to detect, it spreads faster and people have been known to die of it; within a very short period of its detection.

“This is a major concern to us as a country.

“Why I did not want to pre-empt the PTF because we are meeting this afternoon; it is going to be top on the agenda of our discussions.

“I will not be surprised if that will be the recommendation of the committee which is meeting later today,’’ he said.

The minister noted that many European countries had banned flights into the UK; and many imposed restrictions into that country.
