PICTDA successfully Trained 110 Plateau Rural Kids in Digital Skills

110 rural kids trained in digital skills in Plateau

About 110 rural children have completed training in digital literacy in Plateau, to expand market opportunities for local businesses and innovators, Officials say.

The kids had no knowledge of the computer. But they were hand-picked and trained for several weeks, as a first step to solving inequality between rural and urban children, Mr. David Daser, the Director General, Plateau State Information Communication Technology Development Agency (PICTDA) told MK.

In his words, “Each time we talk about automation in schools, hospitals, e-commerce and all other IT innovations, we forget about inequality.

“The urban kids have access to internet and computer and can use them anytime. But the rural kids are deprived of all of these.

“What we are trying to do is to identify these deprived kids and give them basic digital knowledge. This is what we have done with these 110 but this is just the first step. We will examine them and see where next to go.”

The pilot phase of the training in Kagu village, in Pankshin South constituency, will be replicated all over Plateau State, said Mr. Daser. But finances are a threat, he said.

“We are networking with community influencers and representatives to fund the training while we provide the expertise and equipment,” said the IT Official.

“We want a situation where every child will be digitally literate so that the urban child will not have an edge over the rural kid in terms of attempting jamb questions and other basic IT activities,” added Mr. Daser.

Digital literacy, according to Daser will ultimately improve economic prospects for the State.

“The goal of PICTDA is to increase awareness and skills for the youths to explore economic opportunities in the IT sector.

“In addition, the more citizens are digitally literate, the more businesses can sell goods and services.

“If you have only 100,000 people that are digitally literate, it means you can only market your goods to these 1000 but when you increase to 500,000, you have increased the consumer market for such products to 500,000 targets.”

PICTDA had trained about 150 youths in digital marketing and about 45 in software development.

It currently has over 2000 applications for the same training and it is mobilizing resources for it.

Part of the training by PICTDA is responsible Internet usage, which would be isolated in a special radio program, “IT on Radio” starting next Tuesday on Highland 101.5FM Jos. The program will solve hate speech and fake news on social media, said Daser.

ICC commences inquest against Nigerian military, Boko Haram for crimes against humanity

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has revealed its plans to investigate the military and the Boko Haram insurgents for war crimes and crimes against humanity.

This was contained in a statement issued on Friday, December 11, by the ICC Prosecutor, Fatou Bensouda.

Bensouda said the Hague-based court has found a reasonable basis to believe that the Nigerian military and Boko Haram fighters have committed murder, rape, torture, and cruel treatment, including enforced disappearance and hostage-taking in the West African nation.

She further stated preliminary investigations by ICC also revealed that the military carried out the forcible transfer of population; adding that it intentionally directed attacks against civilians not taking direct part in hostilities.

Furthermore, the ICC prosecutor alleged that the military engaged in unlawful imprisonment; conscripting and enlisting children under the age of 15 years into the armed forces; using them to participate actively in hostilities; persecution on gender and political grounds and other inhumane acts.

She stressed that the statutory criteria for opening an investigation into the security situation had been met; paving the way for a full-blown probe of the allegations against the members of the Nigerian military engaged in counter-insurgency operations in the North-East.

Bensouda said: “While my Office recognises that the vast majority of criminality within the situation is attributable to non-state actors, we have also found a reasonable basis to believe that members of the Nigerian Security Forces have committed the following acts constituting crimes against humanity and war crimes: murder, rape, torture, and cruel treatment; enforced disappearance; forcible transfer of population; outrages upon personal dignity; intentionally directing attacks against the civilian population as such and against individual civilians not taking direct part in hostilities.

“Others include unlawful imprisonment; conscripting and enlisting children under the age of 15 years into armed forces and using them to participate actively in hostilities; persecution on gender and political grounds; and other inhumane acts.”

Also, regarding Boko Haram, the ICC prosecutor revealed her office had concluded that there was a reasonable basis to believe that members of Boko Haram and its splinter groups similarly committed various war crimes including sexual slavery, forced pregnancy, and forced marriage; enslavement; torture; cruel treatment; outrages upon personal dignity; taking of hostages; intentionally directing attacks against the civilian population or individual civilians not taking direct part in hostilities.

She accused the terror group of intentionally directing attacks against personnel, installations, material, units, or vehicles involved in humanitarian assistance; intentionally directing attacks against buildings dedicated to education and places of worship and similar institutions; conscripting and enlisting children under the age of 15 years into armed groups and using them to participate actively in hostilities; persecution on gender and religious grounds; and other inhumane acts.

Bensouda insisted that the allegations against Boko Haram are sufficiently grave to warrant an investigation by her office.

“Moving forward, the next step will be to request authorisation from the Judges of the Pre-Trial Chamber of the Court to open investigations,” the ICC prosecutor concluded.

Nigerian man arrested for scamming Indian pastor after promising donations for poor

A Nigerian man has been arrested after allegedly duping a pastor in India by posing as a Canadian philanthropist wishing to donate money and masks for poor people affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Specifically, the incident occurred in Hyderabad, India.

Equally important, reports monitored by 1st News in the Indian media say the Nigerian man was identified as Morgan.

The 32-year-old Morgan was said to be based in Bangalore, according to the Police. He had made the acquaintance of Pastor Moses, who resides in Banjara Hills after the COVID-19 lockdown in that city. The contact with the pastor was made through a social networking platform where Morgan posed as a Canadian philanthropist, the Times of India reports.

Meanwhile, Cyber-crime detective ACP KVM Prasad accused the Nigerian man of faking as a philanthropist to dupe the pastor.

“Morgan told pastor Moses that he was upset about the poor, who were worst affected by the pandemic. Morgan told Moses that he donates money for charity and expressed his willingness to send some money to Moses; along with other items like sanitisers, masks and laptops to distribute among the poor,” Prasad told newsmen.

After Moses agreed to distribute the items, he received a phone call from a woman; who posed as a customs official at the Delhi airport. The woman alerted him about an international parcel that they seized.

“The fraudster posing as a customs official asked the pastor to pay the processing fee and customs duty to clear it for dispatch. After Moses deposited a few lakhs of rupees in the bank accounts mentioned; she kept asking him to deposit more in the name of income tax and money laundering fine. In one month, Moses had sent Rs 24.39 lakh before realising that he was duped,” the ACP said.

Thereafter, he had lodged a complaint on August 19 with the Police. Meanwhile, the Bangalore police arrested the Nigerian man in a similar fraud.

The Hyderabad police had swung into action and brought Morgan to the city on prisoner transit warrant.

NAF receives second fighter helicopter

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has received its second and final Mil Mi-171E heavy-lift tactical transport helicopter.

The helicopter was delivered at NAF Base Makurdi, Benue State, earlier in December.

According to Key.Aero, a website that focuses on military aviation, the Mi-171E (NATO reporting name: Hip-H), serial NAF582, arrived at the Nigerian air base at exactly 1515hrs (local time) after being flown in aboard an Ilyushin Il-76 heavy-lift strategic transport.

It adds that the delivery completes the Federal Government’s procurement of two Mi-171Es from Serbia. Further, the latest acquisition brings the total of new aircraft acquired by Nigeria since 2015 to 23.

In a press release, the NAF said: “The new aircraft will undoubtedly boost [the] NAF’s contributions in the fight against insurgency, armed banditry and other criminal activities in the country. The newly-received aircraft will now be assembled in Makurdi by a team from the equipment vendor; assisted by NAF technicians, prior to test flying and formal induction into the NAF.”

The new helicopter was accepted by the Air Officer Commanding Tactical Air Command; Air Vice Marshal Olusegun Philip, on behalf of the NAF’s Chief of Air Staff; Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar. Additionally, representatives from the Nigeria Customs Service and the Nigeria Immigration Service were also present to ensure that the necessary documentation accompanied the delivery.

Lawan fixes March 2021 for passage of Electoral Bill, seeks prayers from Nigerians

The Senate President, Ahmad Lawan has disclosed that the Electoral bill will be passed by March 2021.

Lawan disclosed this at the public hearing organized by the National Assembly joint committee on Electoral Matters on Wednesday.

The bill seeks to repeal the Electoral Act No.6 2010 (as amended) and enact the Independent National Electoral Commission Act.

“We said we will pass the Electoral Amendment Bill before the end of the first quarter of 2021 and we mean it. People may choose to accuse us of any other thing but not on what we do here.

“We remain committed to all the issues we have considered important in our legislative agenda and without anybody holding us responsible, we have achieved most of those things we have set as targets. The Electoral Act amendment is one of those targets we will work to pass,” he said.

Further, the President of the red chamber advised the public that instead of chastising the federal lawmakers; they should pray for and advise them.

Lawan said: “We don’t need you to hold us because if you hold us, you will disrupt us. Pray for us, continue to advise us, engage with us, partner with us and we will achieve those things.

“I have participated in several elections since 1999 and none of them has been the same. I have had different experiences. It means we always have some new emerging problems. What is required of us is to address those problems and make sure every vote must count.

“There is nothing more important to any country than electing its leaders in a very free, transparent and accountable manner. The integrity of the elections makes even the loser to accept the loss without any grudge. Then those in office will enjoy legitimacy and even respect from opposition.”

Lawan reassured Nigerians that Nigeria can conduct a free and fair election with the new act.

“A free fair and credible election in 2023 is doable, we just have to remain focused. When we get something right, please commend and encourage us. Don’t wait until we make mistakes and then you say ‘these people are self-serving’. From my experience both in the House and in the Senate; the National Assembly has never been self-serving,” he said.

In addition, Lawan claimed that federal lawmakers in the 9th Assembly are the most accessible.

“National Assembly is probably one institution where members are extremely conscious of what they do because of their electorate. We are always open, exposed and easily the most-reachable set of elected people.

“We are human beings. In fact, we may take the wrong decisions. But I want to ensure you that we will do whatever it takes to give Nigerians a befitting Electoral Act that will ensure credible and transparent elections even before 2023,” Lawan stated.

17-year-old girl goes blind after squeezing spot on her nose

Hours after squeezing the boil on her face, a 17-year-old girl from the Philippines went blind.

The 17-year-old girl identified as Mary Ann Regacho is said to be suffering from the mysterious side effect and has become unrecognisable.

The girl had been suffering from a pimple on her nose which she thought was due to hormones, after giving birth when she was 16-years-old.

However, she became concerned as it lasted for several weeks.

After squeezing the spot, Mary began to suffer from pain after a few days.

It then started to spread across her face. She said it was “like a balloon inflating.”

The lump has now taken over her face and affects her vision as the swelling has reached the corner of her eyes, reports The Sun.

The mum-of-one has been trying to cure herself with herbal medication, however, nothing has worked.

Mary said:

”I thought it was only a common pimple, but it hurt so much I could not sleep at night. I tried everything to cure it but nothing worked.

“Now, I feel like my face will never be the same again.”

Mary had been unable to afford treatment as her husband, Albert Sales, works part-time in a neighbour’s farm without a steady income.

After a year she went to the hospital to have it checked, however, she was unable to pay medical bills.

Her husband has appealed to good Samaritans to raise funds.

In a video statement released by Albert, he said: ”I want to ask kind people for donations so we can finally send my wife to a hospital.

”We only earn enough for ourselves and our one-year-old baby so I can’t afford her medical bills.’‘
