COVID-19: Reps implore FG to postpone schools’ resumption by three months

The House of Reps, on Saturday, January 16, implored the Federal Government to postpone the resumption of schools across the country by three months over the COVID-19 pandemic.

This proposal was suggested by the Reps Committee on Basic Education and Services.

4wardwego had reported that several state governments in Nigeria had directed schools in their domains to resume academic activities on January 18.

The Chairman of the Reps committee, Julius Ihonvbere, who made the call in a statement titled: “School resumption: Are we truly prepared?,” urged the FG to review the January 18 resumption date.

He implored the government to postpone the resumption by an additional three months over fears that there are no adequate measures in schools to check the spread of the COVID-19.

The statement read: “We are particularly concerned that when the infection rates hovered around 500 and under; schools were closed but now that it hovers well above 1,000 infections daily, schools are being reopened. Why are we rushing to reopen schools without adequate verifiable and sustainable arrangements to protect and secure our children?

“The Reps fully appreciates the implications of continued school closure on the education sector as well as the larger economy and society. We also acknowledge that the pandemic would remain with us for a while; and we must design ways to live with it.

“Similarly, we acknowledge the argument that most young persons have not been as affected by COVID-19 and many are asymptomatic. Yet, it does not mean they have full immunity against the virus. We also know that they would be working and interacting with adult teachers; administrative workers; and other persons that do not live within the institutions.

“Aside Lagos and a couple of other states governments are unable to enforce COVID-19 protocols. People no longer wear facemasks or use sanitizers.

“Public enlightenment campaigns have more or less stopped. Merely saying they would adhere to the protocols is no guarantee. In rural areas, the situation is worse.

“Our position is that in spite of the very comprehensive protocols established by the Federal Ministry of Education; not up to 10 percent of our educational institutions have implemented five percent of the protocols.

“In most of our primary and secondary schools nationwide; adequate furniture; water; as well as other sanitation and hygiene facilities do not exist. Many poor parents would require support with facemasks and also sanitizers for their children. We have not heard of how this would be addressed.

“We doubt that teachers, instructors, and school managers have been adequately trained and also prepared; to handle COVID-19 safety protocols. We also know that adequate funds have not been provided to schools; to cope with demands that accompany the new normal.

“We would like to challenge the Federal Ministry of Education to first; independently monitor the extent of basic compliance with established protocols in all our schools; and also not just take words of state and local authorities as given.

“The lives of our children are worth much more than the interests as well as comfort of any politician or bureaucrat. It is only after a minimum 75 percent nationwide compliance that we can seriously talk about reopening schools.”

Nigerians react as pigeons embarrass Buhari on Armed Forces Remembrance Day

Nigerians have reacted to the embarrassing incident recorded on Friday when pigeons released by President Muhammadu Buhari during the Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration simply refused to fly.

The incident took place during the event held at the National Arcade, Eagle Square in Abuja.

Also in attendance was Senate President, Ahmad Lawan and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila. Buhari, alongside the two leaders of Nigeria’s legislature, laid wreaths to commemorate the occasion.

Traditionally, the release of the pigeons is a ceremonial gesture which occurs during momentous events. However, the ceremony took on a different twist to the amusement of Nigerians. President Buhari had been called to release the birds. However, they refused to fly despite all the attempts made by the president.

Buhari had even gone as far picking up one of the pigeons which he threw into the air; apparently in a bid to encourage it to take flight. Surprisingly, the bird flew back into the cage.

Equally important, the development had drawn swift reactions from Nigerians. Many had taken to their respective social media accounts to comment on the incident. One of the prominent Nigerians who reacted was a former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode.

Armed Forces Remembrance Day: Buhari, Osinbajo honour heroes

President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday, January 15, led other top government functionaries, including service chiefs and members of the diplomatic corps to honour the Nation’s fallen and living heroes.

The event, which involved the laying of wreaths at the National Arcade, was one of the highlights lined up to celebrate the 2021 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebration (AFRDC).

First to lay the wreath was the President, followed by the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, the Senate President, Speaker, House of Representatives and Chief Justice of Nigeria.

In another order, the Minister of Defence, Retired Maj.-Gen. Bashir Magashi and his Federal Capital Territory counterpart, Malam Mohammed Bello laid the wreaths.

Thereafter, the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Gabriel Olonisakin; the Chiefs of Army, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai; Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadiq Abubakar; Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Adm. Ibok-Ete Ibas, performed the exercise.

Other dignitaries who also performed the wreath-laying ceremony are representatives of the members of the diplomatic corps as well as Nigerian Legion and widows of late officer/soldiers represented by Mrs Ladi Umar.

Buhari thereafter signed the anniversary register and released the ceremonial pigeon as a symbol of national peace.

14wardwego reports that the celebration started with a series of activities including Jummat prayer on Jan. 8 at National Mosque and Interdenominational Christian service on Jan. 10.

Meanwhile, President Buhari, on Thursday, January 14, urged his critics to be fair in criticizing his administration; by considering how the nation was when he took over the realms of power.

He also asked his critics to consider the resources available to the Federal Government under his watch; and what his government had done with the available resources.

According to a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, the President made the call while receiving the Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Christian Pilgrims Commission, Rev. Yakubu Pam, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The statement was titled “Criticise us fairly, President Buhari appeals to Nigerian elite.”

Apart from the state of the country at the inception of his regime, Buhari also asked his critics to consider the resources available to the Federal Government under his watch while criticising him.

He said, “Those criticising the administration should be fair in terms of reflecting on where we were before we came; where we are now and what resources are available to us; and what we have done with the limited resources.

“We had to struggle paying debts; investing in road repairs; and rebuilding, to revamp the rail; and try to get power.

“This is what I hope the elite when they want to criticize will use to compare notes.”

COVID-19Plateau: Spreading Misinformation about COVID-19 A Criminal Offense – Plateau Govt

Plateau State Governor, Simon Lalong has said with the level of misinformation on COVID-19, his government has criminalized any further denial of the virus’s existence in the state.

Governor Lalong, who earlier contracted the virus, spoke about his experience at a meeting held with plateau stakeholders on the second wave of covid-19 and security issues held at the victoria Gowon hall, new government house, little Rayfield Jos.

“For those who are in denial and continue to misinform others that COVID-19 does not exist, I want to warn them to desist. I, as the number one citizen of the state, was a victim and God helped me to come out of it. I can tell you that it is not a joke and I do not wish even my enemies such an experience,” he said.

He said the decision to “criminalize further denial of the disease in the state, was made at the last executive meeting.”
“In other words, if you deny the existence of the disease, keep your denial to yourself because if you are caught propagating it or instigating others to follow you, you will be arrested and prosecuted no matter how highly placed you might be.”

The Plateau state Governor also expressed with sadness how that the state is recording more daily cases than previously.

“Sadly, we are also recording an increasing number of deaths that is very worrisome. In the past weeks, we have seen some prominent persons in Plateau State and indeed across Nigeria dies from COVID-19.

“Mostly, we hear of the big names but do not get to hear of the others involving people that (who) are less prominent. This should give us serious concern because it means that the situation is bigger than what we seem to know.”

“In fact, many have abandoned and refused to observe simple protocols of wearing face masks, maintaining social distance and washing hands regularly,” he added.

“This worries me a lot because this recklessness is further exposing more people to the virus and then increasing the casualty figures. While we have no intention of imposing another lockdown to avoid further damage to the economy, some members of the public are not helping us.”

The Governor further stated that the state was re-strategizing and embarking on more education and sensitization particularly to local communities.

Do your bit to lower the curve, COVID19 is real, the second wave is real. Together we can overcome this, supporting each other to build better societies.

Many Nigerians have also accused the government of deliberately endangering the lives of the citizens amid the second wave of the pandemic by insisting that telecommunications companies deactivate telephone lines of subscribers who failed to link their phones to their National Identity Number.

Subsequently, there have been large crowds at NIMC offices as the deadline for telcos subscribers to link their NIN with their SIM cards approaches.

COVID-19: Taskforce implores Nigerians to ignore reports of lockdown alert

The Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 has urged Nigerians to disregard a fake fresh lockdown alert in circulation on social media.

This was contained in a statement issued by the COVID-19 PTF National Coordinator, Dr Sani Aliyu, on Thursday, January 15.

There have been concerns regarding a fresh lockdown as the country battles the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic.

However, Aliyu revealed that the FG was aware of the economic implication of a fresh lockdown and, therefore, urged Nigerians to adhere to all guidelines to curb the spread of the disease.

He said, “We are aware of a fake message on WhatsApp that we’ve declared a lockdown in the country. This is absolutely not true. I call on the Nigerian public to please ignore this message and continue with normal activities.

“I’m also calling on the public to abide by the non-pharmaceutical interventions including wearing of face masks in the public, washing of hands, and maintaining physical distancing.

“There is an established way that we send our messages to the public including declarations when it comes to infection control. So, please ignore what is going around on WhatsApp.”

4wardwego had reported that the FG March 2020 locked down the Federal Capital Territory as well as Lagos and Ogun States for over five weeks as part of measures to curb the spread of COVID-19 during the first wave of the pandemic.

The lockdown had a tremendous effect on economic activities with the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry putting the loss at about N3bn in the period under review.

Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari, on Thursday, January 14, urged his critics to be fair in criticizing his administration; by considering how the nation was when he took over the realms of power.

He also asked his critics to consider the resources available to the Federal Government under his watch; and what his government had done with the available resources.

The statement was titled “Criticise us fairly, President Buhari appeals to Nigerian elite.”

Apart from the state of the country at the inception of his regime, Buhari also asked his critics to consider the resources available to the Federal Government under his watch while criticising him.
