Plateau LG Workers Protest: Rights group condemns shooting of soldier, Urges security agencies to arrest perpetrators

A coalition of civil rights group has flayed the shooting and wounding of a soldier attached to Operation Safe Haven, a military outfit in Plateau State by aggrieved Plateau local government workers protesting non implementation of minimum wage at the local level in the state.

The group under the auspices of Coalition of Civil Rights Group of Nigeria said the resort to violence by some of the protesters, resulting to the shooting of the soldier today,at the state secretariat, was against the spirit of the protest.

The coalition, in a statement by its national coordinator, Dr Arin Izan and secretary, Mrs Esther Pam, respectively, said it condemned in strong terms the shooting and wounding of the soldier, an Army Lance Corporal by the protesters.

“We condemn in the strongest terms the shooting and wounding of an Army Lance Corporal attached to Operation Safe Haven by the protesting staff of local government councils in Plateau State at the state secretariat today Monday, January 4,2021.

“This senseless act is a further confirmation that politicians and hoodlums have truly hijacked the protest as earlier stated by (some concerned Local government staff in a statement earlier), and there is a need for government and security agencies to take drastic action because this desperate and selfish act may plunge our state into another round of violence,” it said.

According to the rights group,”It is so obvious that local government area workers’ protest has been hijacked by self-seeking politicians to destabilize the peace and tranquillity in Jos.”

“We understand efforts are ongoing to resolve the issues involved with relevant stakeholders, however some of the local government workers; obviously sponsored by some politicians have remained adamant and preferred to protest.

” They prevented state government workers from gaining access into their offices in the state secretariat for the last three weeks, in December,2020,”it recalled.

The coalition said:As at today, January 4,2021, we saw protesters numbering about 3,000, trying to gain entrance into the state secretariat, but troops of Operation Safe Haven, men of the Nigeria Police as well as other security agencies already deployed to forestall any breakdown of law and order intervened to forestall breakdown of law but unfortunately, some of the protesters went violent trying to forcefully gain entrance and harassing innocent citizens.”

“A shot from the crowd hit one soldier attached to Operation Safe Haven and he was wounded. It is obvious that hoodlums have infiltrated the group,” it added.

The Coalition of Civil Rights Group of Nigeria further noted with regret that:”It is unfortunate that some people will be hell bent on disturbing the peace and tranquillity of Jos at the beginning of the year like this when most people are trying to put their lives together to face the new year.”

“We urge government and security agencies to do the needful and prevent these self- seeking politicians from having their way. They do not in anyway, mean good for the workers they pretend to be supporting,” it said.

“We further urge the security agencies to prosecute the protesters arrested today.

Plateau LGA Workers disappointed, Clash with Military over minimum wage Protest

Plateau State Local Government Workers in recent turn of events clashed with the Military operatives who were instructed to dispatch workers from proceeding with the minimum wage protest in Jos, Plateau State.

The workers, who have being protesting for the past one month held a Christmas service at the protest Venue, Joseph Gwomwalk Secretariat Jos and had convened to the venue to continue with the peaceful protest but where forcefully dispatched by the security personnel.

The chairman of Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) for Jos North Local Government Area, Plateau State, Comrade Joshua Bwede expressed disappointment with the manner in which government neglected the local government staff.

“Today we are out as usual to agitate for the National Minimum wage which has been going on for over one month now but surprisingly this morning we came out and meet with hundreds of Soldiers who came to dispatch us.

“But we decided that we will not just go like that but to chants the victory songs. We want the State Government, the Federal Government and the entire world to here us and we are coming to the Secretariat because it is the engine room of the state

“We have been short change for more than 9 years collecting half salary. We have being collecting half of the N18,000 minimum wage and again they want to short change us for the N30,000 minimum wage and we will resist it.

“Instead of the Government to pay it took us to court and brought a complete Military Barrack to the venue of our protest to dispatch us and we are not happy about that.”

Chairman, National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives, Jos North Local Government Area, Comrade Hannatu Semshak described the condition of workers as pathetic and said they are dying slowly.

“The Governor is supposed to enforce so that our money is paid because the minimum wage was negotiated and signed into law in February and they were supposed to pay us in March but was suspended because of COVID-19 to October.

“In October, instead of them to pay us the said amount, we sow N9,000 and that make the workers to come out in anger and in pains.”

Mrs. Semshak said the Local Government workers had a black Christmas due to pains and lack of salary and vowed that they will continue press home their demands until government act positively

Presidency slams Sultan, says Buhari improved security in Nigeria

The Presidency on Sunday, January 3, slammed the claims attributed to the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, on the country’s security situation.

1st News had reported that the Sultan stated at a recent forum that the northern part of the country had been taken over by bandits and terrorists.

However, the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Presidency, Femi Adesina, who appeared on a Channels Television programme, “Sunday Politics,” disagreed with the monarch on the matter.

He insisted that security in the north and other parts of Nigeria has really improved under Buhari.

When asked to comment on the Sultan’s claim, Adesina said the president has been able to tackle insecurity in the country perfectly.

The Presidency also added that the recent comments by the Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum, commending Buhari on the handling of security in the state were a testament to the fact that the president has done well in the area of security.

Adesina said, “You are using that failure too broadly. You don’t take one, two, or three events and then you conclude that it is all failure.

“You will get to some other parts of the North and they will tell you that things are a lot better.

“Even Governor Zulum who is in Borno State, which is like the epicentre of the insurgency, will tell you that the situation in that state is far better than it was in 2015.

“Nigerians should judge President Buhari based on what he met on the ground and not just his promises.

“We can all recall that when the President took over in 2015, several local government areas were under Boko Haram occupation but things have improved drastically.”

On whether there were consequences for lapses in security last year, the Presidency added: “What did the government meet? 17 local governments under full occupation by Boko Haram, emirs had fled their palaces, roads had been locked, and NYSC orientation camps were not open in many states in the country. But look at the situation in the country today. It is a lot better.”

Adesina also argued that President Buhari could not deliver on many of his promises in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic that ravaged the country, saying that despite the challenges, the president still achieved a lot.

“You know 2020 will not be the real benchmark year for most of these things because a lot of the things promised could not also be actualised to the letter because from March, the country, indeed the world was on suspended animation.

“There were lockdowns everywhere and it lasted till the last quarter of that year.

“So, 2020 will not be a good benchmark but it is to the advantage of this government that most of the things promised were not accomplished 100 percent but a good number of them were accomplished despite low earnings and despite the economy not functioning at full throttle,” he concluded.

Shekarau dispels reports of zoning agreement within APC ranks

Ibrahim Shekarau, senator representing Kano central, has stated that there is no zoning agreement in the constitution of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

1st News had reported that ahead of the 2023 presidential election, some chieftains of the ruling party have said there is an agreement for power shift from the north to south.

However, during an interactive session with journalists in Kano on Sunday, January 3, Shekarau said the zoning of the presidential slot is that of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), not APC.

“I want to tell you that there is no place in the APC constitution that the issue of zoning is mentioned. I think it is only considered by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP),” he said.

He said despite the absence of a written agreement on zoning, some persons are still clamouring for it.

Shekarau said while retaining power in a particular region does not necessarily make it superior or better off, common sense ought to prevail while determining the party’s presidential candidate for 2023.

Furthermore, the former Kano Governor explained that the position should be appropriated based on justice and fairness.

“For me, I believe in the principle of balance equation and common sense. Although there is no place in our party where zoning is allowed unlike in the PDP where the zoning system is constitutional, ideally common sense should have guided APC in its selection,” he said.

“And those who want to kill themselves that one particular region should continue to maintain power should know that that will not make them better than other regions.

“For instance, in the last eight years the north has been in power, are we better than other parts of the country? The answer is no.”

Shekarau also spoke about his relationship with Abdullahi Ganduje, governor of Kano, and Rabiu Kwakwanso, his predecessor.

“We have been together with Ganduje for so many years when I was a permanent secretary, cabinet office, then he was a commissioner. So, we interacted a lot,” he said.

“I want to assure you that our relationship has been cordial up to now. There is no problem between us.

“So also with Kwankwaso, we have a good relationship. Our political differences will not affect our relationship. I never decamped from one party to another because of him.

“When I was in APC, Kwankwaso joined the party, and I left. Not because of him, but the leadership of the party. The same thing when I was in PDP and left not because he joined the party.”

Mbaka warns Buhari, others, says Nigeria may witness another youth uprising

Rev. Father Ejike Mbaka, Spiritual Director of the Adoration Ministries, Enugu, has warned that Nigeria may witness another rebellion from the youths reminiscent of the #EndSARS protests which rocked the country in October 2020.

Rev. Mbaka disclosed this during his sermon at the 2020 annual crossover service organized on New Year Eve.

Equally important, the fiery and controversial cleric warned President Muhammadu Buhari on the looming danger of high unemployment among the youths; even as he urged him to make provisions for them. Specifically, Mbaka urged Buhari to take urgent steps to prevent an uprising that might consume his administration.

“The Holy Spirit of God asked me to warn the government of the day to be very careful; to change policies and take care of the youths without politicising their condition. That the government should rise and urgently create jobs and innovate opportunities that would benefit the youths of the nation because they have suffered so much.

“Don’t politicise the condition of the youths, otherwise, they will arise and end the political system.

“Should the government fail to do so as soon as possible; that time is coming when the youths will rise against the government; that any attempt to stop them will end the government.”

Further, he warned that politicians sabotaging or cornering positions meant for the youths will soon be disgraced. Also, he prophesied a sad end for those looting Nigeria’s resources.

“I can see a year ahead; it is not specific whether it is in 2021 that this will happen. But it is within a time in the time of life, that the anger of God will befall many people in the political circle because they have looted so much and disgraced this nation enough.

“Those who should be serving the country have looted the country dry for their personal aggrandizement; such that our children and grandchildren no longer have a future.’’

Mbaka, who described politicians as kidnappers, predicted doom and shame for those sabotaging the future of Nigerian youths.

“They have kidnapped the opportunities meant for the youths; kidnapped the nation’s wealth and jobs meant for the youths. They have kidnapped a lot of infrastructural development. They are kidnappers! If they don’t change but choose to fight Fr Mbaka, they should wait and see.

“The Holy Spirit says that many politicians will run helter-skelter, from one government house to another; many will run to their villages but they would still be trailed to their villages. Many will try to fly out of the country, but the airports will be blocked.

“It will come like a doom, they will be put to shame. Those who have been cornering positions that were meant for the youths will be crying had I known.”

Mbaka has built a reputation for his political-inclined prophesies and harsh criticisms of government.

Plateau LGAs’ Protest: Workers Appeal to Members to Suspend Action Over Minimum Wage

AS local government workers in Plateau State continue street protests against the state government’s non implementation of the new minimum wage at the council level,a group of their colleagues under the aegis of Plateau Concerned Local Government Staff Forum (PLALOCAF) has appealed for suspension of the action.

PLALOCAF said its appeal for suspension of the action was based on the ground that the protest meant to draw attention of the state government to the deplorable plight of workers at the council level and push for implementation of the new minimum wage at the state’s local government level, had been hijacked by opposition politicians and hoodlums alike for selfish reasons.

Besides, the group of alleged that the protest has become an avenue for the desperate opposition politicians to feather their nest, adding that the development had been turned into campaigns for the 2023 elections.

A statement on Friday, and signed by representatives from the three senatorial districts of the state, the group called on members to withdraw from the action to allow relevant bodies negotiate with the government towards amicable resolution.

In the statement signed by Mr Pam Bot for Northern Zone, Nde Patrick Gomos for Central Zone and Sir Birtrus Nanven for Southern Zone, the group charged the state government on the other hand, to sustain negotiations with stakeholders and declare its own position to the aggrieved workers.

“We, the entire management and members of Plateau State Concerned Local Staff Forum (PLALOCAF), came together to issue this statement after a critical and painstaking analysis of the over one-month old strike protest embarked upon by our members and the circumstances that led to the protest.

” We observe with regret that protesters have continuously blocked the entrance to the Plateau State Secretariat for over three weeks, thereby preventing civil servants and other legitimate income earners access to the secretariat for their legitimate business.

“This is illegal and worrisome. This development which we have found to be sponsored by some self-seeking and desperate opposition politicians in the state is a threat to peace and stability of the state,” the group said.

The statement further read:”While we admit that local government staff have absolute rights to protest over their grievances, we must state without fear or favour that the protest have been hijacked by some failed politicians who are out to get at the government of Governor Simon Bako Lalong at all cost. We must not allow that.

“This act negates the purpose and intent of this protest and we are appealing to all members to call off the protest without further delay and allow our umbrella body NULGE, negotiate with the state government and other stakeholders.”

PLALOCAF said:”Our message has been passed to the government at all levels and from the engagement held between government and our leadership,we, the concerned members are satisfied with the feedback from our leadership and we hereby withdraw from protest immediately.”

It added:” We appeal to our all colleagues to stand down the protest and allow our leadership engage with the government and other stakeholders for an amicable solution.”

“Plateau belongs to all of us irrespective of our political, religious and ethnic alignments, the unity, peace, and stability of the state should be paramount to us and not our interest alone.”

“We can only eat and sleep in peace when there is peace. Collecting money, food and other supplies from opposition politicians, and allowing thugs who are not local government staff to infiltrate us is not only dangerous but a serious threat to peace and unity of our state.”

It said: “The blocking of the entrance of the state secretariat by our members during the protest was agreed just to be for three days, to pass a strong message to government but all of a sudden, politicians started sponsoring some of our members and sending in thugs to protest with us. What is really the interest of these politicians?”

According to the workers,”Our continued blocking of the state secretariat is like stopping the engine of a car that has full passenger inside by a particular passenger.”

“The implication of this is that everyone will suffer including the person that stopped the car.”

” It is so sad that we even turned back some non civil servants who go to the secretariat to earn their legitimate living! How will they feed their families?”. They asked.

” We turn back people going to secretariat to process deaths and pensions benefits for their loved once all because we are protesting? Is everyone supposed to go hungry because we have not been paid minimum wage?” The statement read.

According to the statement, ” It is now clear that there is a sinister motive, which is the politics of 2023.”

“Consequently, we are pulling out from this protest immediately. We appeal to all our members to stand down the protest before hoodlums further infiltrate our ranks and make the state ungovernable. Let’s manage the fragile peace in the state,” it said,as it called on “security agencies to put in place close surveillance measures to avert any eventuality.” They are urged to deal decisively with hoodlums or others that may want to break the law or infringe on the rights of law abiding citizens of the State.
