Anglican church suspends Archbishop over affair with a married woman

A retired Archbishop of an Anglican Church in Uganda, Most Rev. Stanley Ntagali has been suspended from church over adultery charges, Uganda Radio Network reported on Tuesday.

Ntagali, 65, was the 8th Archbishop of the Anglican Church of Uganda before handing over to Kazimba on March 1, 2020 after clocking the retirement age.

According to a letter dated January 13, 2021, from the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda Most. Rev. Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu, the retired Archbishop Ntagali has been accused of involving in an extra-marital affair with a married woman and he (Ntagali) has acknowledged.

“This adultery is a grievous betrayal on many levels. Retired Archbishop Ntagali has betrayed his Lord and Saviour; his wife and their marriage vow.

As well as the faith of many Ugandans and global Christians who looked up to him to live the faith he proclaimed;” the letter sent to the Anglican Bishops under the Global Anglican Future Conference (GAFCON) reads in part.

Kazimba added that the Church of Uganda has approximately 13 million members, all of whom have ‘sinned and fallen short of the glory of God,’ as the Bible reads in Romans 3:23 but the Church has to hold its leaders more accountable to the standards that they are called to uphold.

Kazimba said in the letter that he had informed Ntagali about the suspension and that Ntagali will not be allowed to perform any priestly duties such as preaching; function sacramental or represent the Church of Uganda in any way until further notice.

Kazimba also urged the Church of Uganda to send prayers to the spouses in both relationships; for repentance and healing to those who have committed adultery and for justice and forgiveness to flow.

“This is not a time for us to gossip.

This is a time for repentance; a time for prayer; a time to examine our own sin and failings in humility; and a time to make all our relationships right before God,” Kazimba said.

Kazimba, however, added that the Church of Uganda will not shy away from their commitment to upholding the moral standards of marriage as a lifelong; the exclusive union between one man and one woman while condemning adultery as immoral as homosexuality.

“No one is above God’s law.

We call on all who have fallen short of this standard to go before the Lord in prayer and confess your sin; repent of your ways, and make restitution to those you have hurt,” Kazimba added.

Gov. Lalong Urges PLASU, ASUU to call off Strike

Plateau State Governor, Simon Bako Lalong has expressed displeasure as Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Plateau State University Chapter embarks on indefinite strike.

Simon Bako Lalong has asked members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Plateau State University Chapter to rescind its decision to embark on strike as the Government is working to address their grievances.

This was disclosed Makut Simon Macham, the Director of Press & Public Affairs to the Governor of Plateau State on the 18th January 2021.

Lalong said the University which has been closed following the COVID-19 pandemic was ready to re-open before the threat of strike by the local chapter of ASUU.Lalong has stated that his administration has invested huge sums of money to develop the University, the governor appreciated the President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari who through Tetfund has also intervened by approving other projects to the development of the school. He challenged the University management, staff and students to do everything possible to make the environment compliant to COVID-19 protocols as the perpetual closure of the school will not augur well for the development of the State.

The Governor said:

“It is very unfortunate for people to play politics with everything including education. How can you say that the proprietor of a University has no projects in it? I was part of the founding of this institution when I was Speaker. People will remember that when I came into office, the University was shut down. We did everything possible to reopen it and today, it has blossomed and is fast growing. It is therefore very sad and untrue for this insinuation to come from people who should know better. This is nothing but pure mischief”.

Vice Chancellor of the University Prof. Yohanna D. Izam who took the Visitor round the projects appreciated the efforts of the Lalong administration in reviving the institution which he said has accredited many courses and established three new faculties with many students successfully graduating.

The governor also inspected projects ongoing in the school including the new Senate Building, Faculties of Law, Environmental Sciences, Health Sciences, Social sciences, Advancement and Linkages building, Staff offices and classrooms complex, E-Library and assorted volumes of books in the central library building, 600- capacity Lecture theatre, School of postgraduate Studies building complex, University Health Centre building and medical equipment, Street light project, Wire fencing of female hostel and PLASU Security System/ CCTV cameras project, sports complex among others.

Uzodinma raises alarm as COVID-19 sweeps Imo State, begs Buhari for assistance

Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma has raised the alarm over what he described as devastating effects of the second wave of COVID-19 in the state.

Further, Uzodinma has called for for urgent presidential intervention to check the menace.

Uzodinma made the call while addressing State House correspondents at the end of a closed door meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari, at the State House, Abuja, on Monday.

“The number of people testing positive and dying now are on the increase…The State Government alone cannot, as a matter of honesty, summon the capacity and resources to address this menace.

“So, I also pleaded and Mr President has promised that he would intervene,” he said.

The governor disclosed that already he had signed an Executive Order meant to check the spread of the deadly virus in Imo; adding that the state government had introduced sanctions for people refusing to wear face mask in compliance with the Presidential Task Force’s protocols on COVID-19.

Further, he revealed that a Task Force on COVID-19 has been put place in the state; even as measures are being taken to reduce the spread of the virus and ensure the safety of all citizens.

“Few days ago I issued an Executive Order to make not wearing mask a crime in Imo State. So, any moment from now, we will begin to arrest people refusing to wear mask.

“I have given a 14-day ultimatum for those coming into Imo to wear their face mask and comply with NCDC protocol or be arrested. I have created six mobile courts to handle that. We don’t joke. It is better we offend people than to allow this disease to continue to spread in Imo State.

“I have in place a Task Force on COVID-19 chaired by Prof. Maurice Iwu, the former Chairman of INEC…They have done well.

“We have in place four isolation centres, fully equipped…The government partnering with the private sector has also equipped an additional isolation centre at the University Teaching Hospital, Orlu.’’

However, the governor lamented that the COVID-19 pandemic has continued to run riot in the state.

“But the number is growing daily and those testing positive are also on the increase. So, I think we need to prepare more grounds, build more isolation centres, get more medications; get oxygen and also try to have respiratory support equipment for those who have difficulty in breathing after they have been infected.”

Equally important, the governor frowned at the attitude of some Nigerians who deliberately refused to comply with non-pharmaceutical protocols to check the spread of the virus.

“It’s not easy honestly, because, knowing the attitude of our people. They are so stubborn. You continue to plead with them to see reason with you because you can only be stubborn if you are alive.

“We’ve seen how people are dying every day, everywhere, even in Imo because of this ugly monster called COVID-19. So, our people are invited through this medium to please respect and comply with NCDC protocols; for this COVID-19, so that at least we will be alive,” he pleaded.

Bello: Kogi Gov alleges conspiracy by FG to introduce killer diseases via COVID-19 vaccines

The Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, has alleged that the COVID-19 vaccine is meant to bring about a disease that would kill people.

1st News had reported that Nigeria has ordered batches of the vaccines in a bid to stem the spread of the second wave.

However, Governor Bello, in a viral video, where he was seen addressing a crowd on Monday, January 18, expressed worries over the vaccines.

He said, “Vaccines are being produced in less than one year of COVID-19. There is no vaccine yet for HIV, malaria, cancer, headache, and for several other diseases that are killing us.

“They want to use the vaccines to introduce the disease that will kill you and us. God forbid.

“We should draw our minds back to what happened in Kano during the Pfizer polio vaccines that crippled and killed our children. We have learned our lessons.

“If they say they are taking the vaccines in the public allow them to take their vaccines. Don’t say I said you should not take it but if you want to take it open your eyes before you take the vaccines.”

Bello has constantly expressed doubt over the existence of COVID-19 and was even at a time accused by the Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) of frustrating efforts to carry out tests for the disease in Kogi State.

Meanwhile, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), on Monday, January 18, challenged the Governor of Borno State, Babagana Zulum, to post photo and video evidence of Christians who are allegedly members of Boko Haram.

This was contained in a statement issued by the CAN General Secretary, Joseph Daramola, who stated this in an interview.

Daramola was reacting to allegations by Zulum that Christians are members of the Abubakar Shekau terror group.

1st News had reported that Zulum alleged on Friday at an event in Lagos that Asians, foreigners, and other Africans are part of the terror group.

The governor had said, “I’m from Borno State, and many of our children are into Boko Haram. I’m not denying the fact. But again, they are being sponsored by many people across the world. Among Boko Haram, we have white men, Asians, Africans, Muslims, and Christians.”

COVID-19: UNIJOS Approves Herbal Tea For Treatment and Prevention without NAFDAC Reg No.

The University Senate has asked all staff in the University community for patronage of the herbal tea as it is sold at an affordable price.

In a memo dated January 11, the university senate gave approval for consumption of the tea, produced in 2020 by the UNIJOS Africa Centre of Excellence in Phytomedicine Research and Development.

The Cable, however, learnt that the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) is yet to approve the drug for use.

Mojisola Adeyeye, director-general of NAFDAC, told TheCable on Friday that she was not aware of any such approval and would have to check with the relevant directorate at the agency.

But Simeon Omale, a pharmacologist who is one of the lead researchers, confirmed that the centre only has a pre-conditional approval — and not a final nod — for the supplement.

He, however, added that “we have done the research that NAFDAC needs to ascertain the safety of the product.”

Innocent Emmanuel, chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in Plateau state, also told TheCable that the association “has not been communicated officially” about the development.

‘HASTY STEP’

In the memo signed by Monday Danjem, UNIJOS registrar, the senate said it deliberated on the herbal tea during its fourth special meeting for the 2019/2020 academic session.

“Senate was informed that the University of Jos Centre for Excellence in Phytomedicine has produced a home-made herbal tea for the prevention of COVID-19, and it is sold at an affordable price,” the memo reads.

“Senate directed that the information should be disseminated to all staff in the University Community for patronage of the herbal tea.”

Findings by TheCable, however, showed that the university authorities only acted in anticipation of a yet-to-be-given approval from NAFDAC.

Omale confirmed that while no clinical trial on humans has been carried out on the herbal tea, “we have done the safety profile (and) it is very safe.”

“We have done some reasonable research on it. We have done the safety profile; we claimed anti-inflammatory, we claimed anti-oxidant, we claimed anti-COVID. We have checked the active ingredients of the herbal tea against SARS-COV-2, which is the virus that causes COVID-19, and it has very good interaction with the virus,” he said.

“Using the fruit flies being used for drug discovery in the modern world, we tested for the anti-inflammatory that we reported there, and we have also checked it for anti-malaria. So, those basic experiments have been

Asked why the university authorised the herbal tea for use when it is yet to get final approval from NAFDAC, the researcher said with the urgent nature of the pandemic, “if you have gotten some evidence, there is an accelerated kind of approval.”

“Herbal medicine is not like the normal orthodox drugs that you go through various stages of clinical trials. For herbal medicine, as long as people are taking it and it is safe, NAFDAC will just do a little profile to check how safe it is and they give you number,” he explained.

“We have done the research that NAFDAC needs to ascertain the safety of the product; that is the document we are going to present to them on Monday”.

Senate charges Buhari to mandate N98m refund spent by Petroleum Ministry on leaflets

The Senate, on Monday, January 18, criticised the Ministry of Petroleum Resources for spending, without due process, N98.4 million to supposedly print leaflets.

1st News gathered that the leaflets were alleged to have been printed as part of an awareness campaign programme for the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB).

President Muhammadu Buhari is the substantive minister of Petroleum Resources ministry, a portfolio he has held since coming to office in 2015, while he also appointed a minister of state for the ministry, to oversee the days to day running of affairs.

However, the Senate remained unsatisfied with the explanation offered by the ministry, while mandating it to return the money to the federation account.

It also asked the ministry to refund another N39 million paid into two personal accounts to monitor the project within Abuja.

The Senate Committee on Public Accounts (SPAC’s) gave the order following a query issued by the Office of the Auditor-General of the Federation in the 2015 report and brought before it for probe and presentation to the plenary of the Senate.

The Chairman of the Committee, Senator Mathew Uroghide (PDP Edo South) made this known to newsmen on Saturday.

The queries which were made available to newsmen read:

“Contrary to the procurement process, an entry in the cash book for the sum of N98.4 million was made in favour of a company for printing of leaflets for awareness campaign programme for the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB).

“There was no formal award of contract and it was also observed that the approval for the payment was via memo presented by the Director (Press) to Ministerial Tender Board meeting of 9th and 11th October 2013.

“The permanent secretary had been requested to take procedural disciplinary measures against the erring officers in line with the provision with extant regulation.”

In its written response to the Senate, the ministry replied that it made adequate publicity for the project.

“M/s Dangrace and partners Ltd were selected based on proven capabilities and competence.

“It should be stated that veritable costing proposals were submitted and approved before the Authorization for the award and production of Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) leaflets.

“The Department complied with necessary rule and procedure,” it said.
