Fani-Kayode backs Sunday Igboho on quit notice to Fulani herdsmen

A former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode has thrown his weight behind a popular activist, Sunday Igboho and the quit notice issued to Fulani herdsmen to leave the South West.

4wardwego reports that Sunday Igboho had given the Fulani a seven-day ultimatum to quit; even as he accused them of perpetrating murders and kidnappings.

The development had seen the Oyo State Governor, Seye Makinde, order the arrest of the activist. However, Fani-Kayode has hailed the move by Sunday Igboho. Specifically, Fani-Kayode had described the development as a sign of the rise of radical, young leaders in the region.

Further, he had expressed his support for their belief in Oduduwa Republic.

Equally important, Fani-Kayode had disclosed this on his verified handle on the micro-blogging site, Twitter, on Friday.

He had tweeted: ‘‘New leaders are rising up in the SW. They are strong, fearless, radical & young. Names like Sunday Igboho, Olayomi Koiki and others come to mind. The SW has finally got a new set of champions & heroes. They believe in Oduduwa Republic. None can stand against them. I commend them.’’

4wardwego reports that Sunday Igboho had led his supporters to storm Igangan, Ibarapa North Local Government Area of Oyo State on Friday.

The popular activist was received by hundreds of youths in the town. Addressing the youths at Igangan Town Hall, Sunday Igboho had restated his determination to rid the region of Fulanis.

‘‘What is happening will not be limited to this place. We will drive out Fulani from entire Yorubaland. They want to be killing us. We will not accept this,’’ he had stated.

However, Makinde had expressed his opposition to the move.

As a matter of fact, the Oyo State Governor stated that his administration government would resist anyone hiding under the guise of protecting Yoruba interests to cause ethnic tension and perpetrate crisis; noting that the security agencies have been charged not to target any particular ethnic group; but to wage war against criminal elements, irrespective of their tribes, religions, or creed.

Further, Makinde charged the new Commissioner of Police in the state, Ngozi Onadeko, to treat Sunday Igboho and others; whom he described as fanning the embers of ethnic tension, as common criminals, when caught.

Also, he urged the Biden presidency to strengthen US ties with Nigeria and to help in the country’s war on terror.

“As I congratulate President Biden and VP Kamala Harris, I urge them and their administration to strengthen US-Nigeria ties and help our beloved nation’s war on terror by providing every type of support required to win our war against the insurgency we face.

“I also look forward to the removal of every travel restriction on Nigerian citizens, in keeping with the good relations that have existed between our two nations beginning with the July 27, 1961 state visit of our first Prime Minister, Alhaji Tafawa Balewa, to President John F. Kennedy, and continuing over the decades since then.

“As the playwright, George Bernard Shaw once said, America and Nigeria are two nations divided by a common language. And millions of Nigerians and I wish to see that relationship sustained to the mutual benefit of both our democratic nations.

Gani Adams backs Akeredolu over eviction of herdsmen from Ondo forest reserves

The Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, Gani Adams, has supported the Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, stating he has the constitutional right to give the notice to quit to illegal residents in the state’s forest reserves.

4wardwego had reported that Akeredolu on Monday ordered herdsmen to leave the state’s forest reserves within seven days.

But the Northern Elders’ Forum directed the Fulani herdsmen to disregard the notice to quit forest reserves in the state.

Also, the Presidency, in a statement by the President’s Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, also faulted the governor, saying he should not act outside his constitutional powers.

However, reacting in a statement issued on Wednesday, January 20, by his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Aderemi, Gani Adams said the Presidency had failed to address the security situation across the country.

Gani Adams stated, “Garba Shehu/Presidency apparently doesn’t know the meaning of forest reserves. It’s not accessible except to authorised personnel/loggers. Apart from the place being a place for valued cash trees, it also means a haven of safety for protected animals against poachers.

“The herdsmen living in the forests are not only unauthorised, but they also would likely cut down trees to make fires and must also kill animals for food.”

Three senior lawyers and groups, including Afenifere and the Yoruba Council of Elders, on Wednesday, also criticised the Presidency over its stand on the Ondo State Government’s ultimatum to herdsmen in the state’s forest reserves.

Meanwhile, Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has warned against actions that could incite peace in the state.

According to the governor, no individual or group has the right to initiate forceful eviction of the Fulanis from Oyo State.

Makinde gave the warning in a statewide broadcast, on Wednesday, January 20.

This was in reaction to the ultimatum that was reportedly given to the Fulanis in the state by Chief Sunday Adeyemo, a.k.a Sunday Igboho, a popular businessman and activist from the Oke Ogun axis of the state.

He warned that any erring person would be made to face the wrath of the law.
