Armed men believed to be herdsmen on Friday killed six farmers in Wereng village, 50kms southwest of Jos, the capital of Plateau State.
The attack at about 8:30pm Nigerian time in Riyom area, left two others severely injured.
Eyewitnesses say the attackers spoke Fulfulde and Hausa during the invasion. “We just left tge mining site about an hour earlier and were just seated discussing how to go about it next, with the rumours of attacks coming, then suddenly we heard gunshots,” Mr. Dauda Jatau, a wounded survivor said.
Rumours had circulated online from Wednesday night, of planned attacks in the village.
Mr. Mafeng Gwalson, the Chairman of Riyom confirmed the attack in a WhatsApp chat, but did not give details.
Senator Istifanus Gyang, of Plateau North Senatorial District “unequivocally” condemned the “unwarranted attack on peace loving and hard working citizens”.
The Senator in a press statement through his spokesperson, Musa Ashoms said the killers are not unknown to security agencies.
“It is sad therefore that people in Plateau North are repeatedly being hunted, ambushed and killed without any decisive action,” he said.
Mr. Gyang urged government and security agencies to be serious about “the safety and protection of law abiding citizens from terrorists, bandits and killer herdsmen.”

A wave of concern is building up over the creation of part-human, part-monkey embryos by scientists.
The scientists, a US-Chinese team, injected human stem cells which have the ability to develop into many different body tissues into macaque embryos.
The development has raised a fresh round of debate into the ethical nature of these experiments. The BBC reports that other so-called mixed-species embryos, or chimeras, have been produced in the past; with human cells implanted into sheep and pig embryos.
The scientists were led by Prof Juan Carlos Izpisua Belmonte of the Salk Institute in the US. Prof. Belmonte is believed to have helped make the first human-pig hybrid in 2017. He believes that the latest experiment could help address the severe shortage in transplantable organs; as well as help understand more about early human development, disease progression and ageing.
“These chimeric approaches could be really very useful for advancing biomedical research not just at the very earliest stage of life, but also the latest stage of life. Ultimately, we conduct these studies to understand and improve human health,” he stated.
Further, he disclosed that the study had met the current ethical and legal guidelines.
However, a number of scientists have raised concerns about the experiment. They argue that while the embryos in this case were destroyed at 20 days; others could try to take the work further. Consequently, they have called for a public debate over the implications of creating part human/part non-human chimeras.
One of the opposing scientists, Dr Anna Smajdor; a lecturer and researcher in biomedical ethics at the University of East Anglia’s Norwich Medical School, told the BBC that the research posed “significant ethical and legal challenges”.
“The scientists behind this research state that these chimeric embryos offer new opportunities; because ‘we are unable to conduct certain types of experiments in humans’. But whether these embryos are human or not is open to question,” she stated.
Also quoted was Prof Julian Savulescu, director of the Oxford Uehiro Centre for Practical Ethics; who doubles as co-director of the Wellcome Centre for Ethics and Humanities, University of Oxford. In his opinion, the research opens Pandora’s box to human-nonhuman chimeras.
“These embryos were destroyed at 20 days of development. But it is only a matter of time before human-nonhuman chimeras are successfully developed; perhaps as a source of organs for humans. That is one of the long-term goals of this research,” he added.

“Depending on the vibe, I might have a project coming out for you guys this year.
You know I’m a project guy, I’m all about legacy.
I would really love to have another project this 2021; but at the same time I feel like whatever you’re doing you have to take your time.
You have to have to be patient; you have to have control but most definitely maybe later this year,” he hinted.
The multiple award-winning singer and songwriter made this known during a live video on Instagram saying the upcoming music project would ‘slap hard.’
“A Fireboy project will really slap but that’s after a couple of singles.
I’m working on that right now and trying to make sure that whatever it is I’m dropping has to slap like an African mother because if it doesn’t slap that’s trouble.”
The Obafemi Awolowo University graduate also hinted at a collaboration with Mavin artiste, Korede Bello when the latter joined the conversation.
“Expect something from myself and Korede Bello soon. We go run am private” Fireboy disclosed.
Equally important, Fireboy DML already has two albums to his credit, ‘Laughter, Tears, and Goosebumps,’ released in November 2019, and ‘Apollo,’ released in August 2020.
Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has replied to the Minister of Finance, Budget, and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed after she denied that the Federal Government printed N60 billion in March to support allocation to states.
Obaseki launched his riposte via a series of tweets on Thursday, April 15.
According to the governor, it is statutory to offer useful advice for the benefit of the nation; and also called on the Federal Government to end ‘monetary rascality.’
He said, “While we do not want to join issues with the Federal Ministry of Finance; we believe it is our duty to offer useful advice for the benefit of our country.
“The Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs. Zainab Ahmed, should rally Nigerians to stem the obvious fiscal slide facing our country.
“Rather than play the Ostrich, we urge the government to take urgent steps to end the current monetary rascality; so as to prevent the prevailing economic challenge from degenerating further.
“We believe it is imperative to approach the Nigerian project with all sense of responsibility and commitment; and not play to the gallery because ultimately, time shall be the judge of us all.”
The Finance Minister after the 41st virtual Federal Executive Council meeting at the State House on Wednesday told journalists that Obaseki’s claim was very sad as well as untrue.
“The issue that was raised by the Edo State Governor, for me, is very sad because it is not a fact.
“What we distribute at FAAC is revenue that is generated and in fact, distribution revenue is public information. We publish revenue generated by FIRS; the Customs; and the NNPC; and we distribute at FAAC.
“So, it is not true to say we printed money to distribute at FAAC. It is not true,” she said.
The Finance Minister insisted that the nation’s debt profile is still at sustainable limits; and maintained that the nation’s debt profile which currently stands at 23percent of the total GDP is at sustainable levels.
The Osun State Government has announced the suspension of three school principals for allowing a group to spread and preach disunity and secessionist message of the Yoruba nation to students.
This was disclosed by Governor Adegboyega Oyetola, through Commissioner for Education Folorunsho Bamisayemi, emphasised that his administration frowned at any move to disunite the country.
According to the Osun Government, it was not aware and never gave consent to the group to speak with public school students in the state.
Oyetola further maintained that the state had never at any point in time associated with any group capable of hindering the unity of the country.
“Nigeria is one entity and will continue to remain so. The State Government of Osun never gave consent to any group to speak with students of public schools on a matter we know can cause disunity and chaos in the country,” he said.
“As a Nigerian state, we believe in the Nigerian dream. We urge every Nigerian to pray and work for Nigeria not to break up. As for those principals that allowed such a group into the premises of our schools, they will face the consequences of their actions.”
Also reacting, Special Adviser to the Osun Governor on Education, Jamiu Olawumi said it was unfortunate that some unscrupulous elements were going about polluting the minds of young children who were still naïve.
While warning such seditious groups to stay away from the state, he assured that students of secondary schools in the state would continue to be symbols of Nigeria’s unity at all times.
The Chairman of the committee, Rep. Luke Onofiok (PDP-Akwa-Ibom), made this known during a meeting; with the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) in Abuja on Wednesday, April 14.
1st News had reported that JUSUN began a nationwide indefinite strike on Monday, April 6; over the non-implementation of judicial financial autonomy as enshrined in the Constitution.
President Muhammadu Buhari had signed an Executive Order granting financial autonomy to the judiciary; and state house of assembly in May 2020, after several agitations.
However, the gazetting of the order was suspended after Buhari met with governors; who later expressed concern over its constitutionality.
The Reps also appealed to state governors to implement the section of the constitution that demands financial autonomy for the judiciary.
