Pregnant widow petitions Police over hubby’s alleged murder

A 31-year-old pregnant widow, Mrs Rose Etunmisen, has demanded justice over the gruesome murder of her husband.

The deceased was allegedly murdered by hoodlums at Oke-Eletu community at Ijede, Ikorodu, Lagos State.

Equally important, the victim was identified as Ifeanyi Etunmisen. He was murdered by suspected hoodlums who invaded the premises of Oluwatosin Onamade; an All Progressives Congress (APC) chairmanship aspirant for Ijede LCDA, on Friday. Furthermore, reports indicate that the hoodlums also injured one Oluwafemi Onamade who is currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.

Consequently, the pregnant widow of the deceased Etunmisen has called for justice for her slain husband.

“At about 7.30 in the evening, my landlady called me and broke the news of the death of my husband to me through a friend.

“I want justice to be done. I am pregnant and about to deliver. Nigerians and Lagos State Commissioner of Police should come to my rescue. The CP should not allow me to suffer this injustice because my husband has gone for ever,” she said.

Meanwhile, the pregnant widow revealed that the deceased was a domestic staff on the premises where he was murdered by the hoodlums.

However, speaking on the incident, Onamade said he was the target of the attack.

“The hoodlums attempted to kill me. But in the process, they started shooting sporadically and Ifeanyi was killed by stray bullets. My sibling was severely injured by the bullets and is currently in coma. The hoodlums carted away the sum of N1.7m meant for a client.

“I’m calling on the Acting Inspector General of Police to come to my aid to unravel this mystery,” Onamade said.

Also, confirming the incident, the spokesperson, Lagos State Police Command, CSP Muyiwa Adejobi, said the incident was reported at Ijede Police Station.

“We have a case reported to the police in Ijede…The Commissioner of Police has directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, for proper investigation.

“We cannot be judgemental at this stage. We need to widen the scope of our investigation to unravel the incident.

“However, we are on the case and we will get to the root of the matter,” said the spokesperson.

Imo prison break: 9 fleeing inmates nabbed in Ghana (Full names)

About nine inmates who escaped during the attack on the Nigeria Correctional Centre facility in Owerri, Imo State, have been re-arrested in Ghana.

Reports in Ghana monitored by 1st News indicate that the inmates were apprehended by the Ada District Police Command in the Greater Accra Region.

The arrested suspects include Freedom Yusuf, 25; Emmanuel Obinnah Chiedozie, 27; Steve Eyenuku, 33; Enebeli Lucky, 29; Yommi Usmah, 29; Kelli Ekureni, 33; Obi Onuora, 38; Patrick Chanar, 47, and Bless Eyenuku, 25.

The arrested men are suspected to be part of over 1,800 inmates that escaped from the Imo State Correctional earlier this month. The fleeing inmates were said to have been monitored, following credible intelligence that they were about to cross the Volta River into Ada Foh on Sunday, April 18. They were eventually tracked to an area known as Clinic Junction Lorry Station; from where they were arrested in a Sprinter bus with registration number, ER 1657-14.

They have been handed over to the Ghana Immigration Service in Tema to assist with investigations.

Imo State recorded one of its biggest security breakdown earlier in April when gunmen attacked the Imo State Police Command headquarters. The gunmen had proceeded to raze some vehicles parked at the command headquarters. Furthermore, the hoodlums had released suspects in almost all the cells at the State Criminal Investigation Department.

Thereafter, they had proceeded to the Correctional Centre and freed more than 1,800 inmates.

The gunmen had operated unopposed for more than two hours; with reports claiming that they had asked all prisoners to leave as Jesus Christ had risen. The incident had taken place around Easter.

Subsequently, a massive manhunt had been launched for the fleeing inmates; with authorities in Imo State and the Correctional Service enlisting the help of the International Criminal Police Organisation (Interpol). Mug shots of the fleeing inmates had also been released.

Meanwhile, about 48 of the fleeing inmates were said to have been recaptured by the Correctional Service. Also, one of the inmates was also recaptured by the Akwa Ibom State Police Command.

Boko Haram: UN suspends aid operations in Borno

The United Nations (UN) has temporarily halted humanitarian aid operations in the North East state of Borno over incessant attacks on its operatives and facilities by the Boko Haram sect.

The development was disclosed by a UN spokesman on Monday.

Furthermore, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs has relocated its staff from the area. The move comes after Boko Haram launched attacks earlier this month on humanitarian operations in Dikwa and Damasak.

Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, revealed that the development will hurt needy beneficiaries in the affected region.

“Nearly 9,000 internally displaced people and 76,000 people in the host community will be impacted,” Dujarric said.

The UN spokesman added that the agency is closely monitoring the situation in Nigeria.

In the latest attack by Boko Haram on the aid agency, at least five non-governmental offices and several vehicles; a mobile storage unit, water tanks, a health outpost and a nutrition stabilization centre were damaged.

Nevertheless, the resident and humanitarian coordinator in Nigeria, Edward Kallon, says the UN will resume operations as soon as possible; adding that this is necessary so that civilians affected by the conflict continue to receive the assistance they need.

Kallon condemned the attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure; even as he stated that the actions of Boko Haram may violate international humanitarian law.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in Bayelsa, CP Mike Okoli, has ordered investigations into circumstances leading to the death of a popular Bayelsa-based baker.

This was disclosed in a statement on Monday by the Public Relations Officer of the command, SP Asinim Butswat.

UNIJOS PROTEST: PRESS TEXT BY STAFF AND STUDENTS’ UNIONS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF JOS

PRESS TEXT BY STAFF AND STUDENTS’ UNIONS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF JOS DELIVERED ON MONDAY 19TH APRIL, 2021 AT THE NARAGUTA CAMPUS GATE, UNIVERSITY OF JOS.

Protocols
Gentlemen of the Press.

It is with a heavy heart that we are gathered this morning to address you on few issues concerning the University of Jos.
Recall that news bulletin from some Media Houses and a publication captured on a National Daily (The Daily Trust) of Monday 12th April, 2021 page 4 bothering on alleged Non-compliance with extant Laws of the University of Jos Act with respect to the Selection process which will lead to the emergence of a substantive Vice-Chancellor.
It is no longer news that sometime in February this year the University lost its Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, the Late Prince Tony Momoh (of blessed memory) who transited to the great beyond after a protracted illness. May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God rest in perfect peace with the Lord.

The University of Jos Act Cap U8 LFN 2004, Third Schedule, Article 1(7) states, “if the Pro-Chancellor is not present at a meeting of the Council, such other member of the Council present at the meeting as the Council may appoint in respect of that meeting shall be the Chairman at that meeting, and subject to Sec 4 of the Act and the foregoing provisions of this paragraph, the Council may regulate its own procedure.”

Furthermore, the University of Jos Governing Council Standing Orders Article 9 further supports stating that, “ if the Chairman is not present at a meeting of the Council, such other member of the Council present at the meeting as the Council may appoint in respect of that meeting shall be the Chairman at that meeting.”
In compliance with the above provisions, subsisting Council Members through due process elected Dr. (Mrs.) Philomena Mutbam to preside over the Governing Council’s meeting for that day.
It may interest you to note that the late Chairman of Council had initiated the process for the emergence of a new Vice-Chancellor via an advert on 23rd December, 2020 to be concluded in April 2021 before the expiration of their tenure in May of the same year. This was followed by the constitution of a Search Team.

Council first met and took the report of the Search Team. After which Council elected her own representatives on the Selection Board. This was followed by a Senate Emergency Meeting which elected two members of the Selection Board.
The Selection Board met and shortlisted candidates from the list of applicants
and scheduled an interview for 20th – 22nd April being Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and the Council proposed meeting to take the report of the Selection Board on Friday 23rd April.
As at the time of this Press Conference, we are not aware of any breach of the extant Laws regarding the selection process leading to the emergence of a new Vice Chancellor for the University of Jos neither are we aware of any petition submitted by any candidate, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), Unions, Federal Ministry of Education and the Federal Character Commission. If at all there is any, the right thing should have been initiating a detailed investigation of the processes so far before any decision is arrived at.

To our greatest dismay, the entire selection process was ordered to be suspended and invitation was extended to all Council Members to appear before the almighty Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC) unfailingly Wednesday the 22nd day of April 2021.
This, we strongly feel is orchestrated to truncate the laid down statutory processes duly followed before the invitation. May we also state that it is an outright disregard of the University Autonomy Act and a usurpation of responsibility of the University Governing Council.

This singular act of suspending the selection process is creating unnecessary tension within the University Community and generating suspicion amongst the candidates thereby brewing conflict in a peaceful environment.
This from our observation is perceived to be an external interference skewed to favour a particular candidate as against the interest of the integrity of the process.

We would like to draw the attention of the teeming populace of a similar scenario which played out in the University of Benin where the Chairman of the Governing Council resigned and contested an election without being replaced. The remaining members sat and elected an acting Chairman who presided over that process that saw to the emergence of the present Vice-Chancellor, Professor Lilian Salami without any rancour.
We beg to ask, why is that of the University of Jos an exception?
We therefore have the following prayers:
The Visitor to the University should as a matter of urgency call the attention of Professor Abubakar Abdulrasheed the Executive Secretary NUC to desist from interfering with the activities of the University Governing Council who were appointed to oversee the activities of the University on behalf of the Visitor.
The Honourable Minister of Education should direct the conclusion of the selection process for the emergence of a new Vice Chancellor.

In conclusion, we call on all members of the of the University community to remain calm but resolute that due process must be followed as the only alternative for peaceful transition.
It must be noted therefore that any deviation from the above mentioned would have the Executive Secretary NUC held responsible for any breach of peace in the University.
While waiting for the prompt response of the NUC in that regard, we shall continue to monitor processes which would determine our next line of action.
Thank you for listening.
Long live the University of Jos!
Long live Plateau State.!!
Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria.!!!

Comrade Muplang Simon Kangpe
SSANU Secretary, Unijos Branch.
